Great job guys. 5 stars. Hope Canada can exceed expectations. The underdog mantle looks much better on them and was what fueled their run in the lead up to 2022. Like the friendlies they look to have scheduled in early June (Netherlands and, apparently, France) and one positive you left out was the fact that their squad was all under 30 against Trinidad and Tobago. FYI, Borjan didn’t make the squad in Texas, Max Crépeau is tending the sticks now (MLS Cup winner with LAFC). Hopefully they get a real permanent gaffer in the next month and surprise. Certainly nobody expects much from them and that can be liberating. Can’t wait for the Group B video.

I could actually see Chile upsetting Argentina on Match Day 2 with a Gareca masterclass & because Argentina's pre-Copa preparation has been really complacent and lackluster. Chile is looking miles better already and played France really close in March. Group A is too weak for Argentina to bow out early though, and a loss to wake them up could prove to be a blessing, leading to them repeating the title (which is what I think is going to happen)....Peru also has tournament pedigree and experience over Canada, so they can't be dismissed. We're talking about a team that's made 4 of the last 5 Copa America semifinals. But their lack of goal scoring is very worrisome, the Dominican Republic gave them some problems, and Canada's offensive firepower has the means to hurt them.
    Slight surprise -
    1. Chile
    2. Argentina
    3. Canada
    4. Peru

Although Peru hasn't played good in their first 2 games with fossati, we don't really know how he's going to prepare those games exactly. My expectations for Canada (from even before the T&T match was played) was for Canada to score a goal and to get a draw against someone in their Copa America group.
For my fellow Canadians, this might sound like I am low-balling Canada's chances but I feel:
    (a) both Chile and Peru are battle hardened against tough CONMEBOL opposition and will be tougher for Canada to deal with than we might otherwise expect,
    (b) Biello will likely screw something up tactically during the tournament, and,
    (c) Canada's weak back line doesn't give me confidence,
One factor that might help Canada is playing against the Dutch and France right before Copa America begins. If they perform well in those 2 matches the young side might gain that extra confidence they need to get in a slightly better result from Chile and/or Peru (as compared to what I am expecting).

As an American I can easily concede that Jonathan David is the best striker in CONCACAF. I could care less where Santi transfers to, David has been more consistent in Europe. And Canada has arguably 2 of the 3 best players in the continent. But Nations Leagues are won by TEAMS... and Canada's team is subpar to the United States

    • @greglawrence9230
      @greglawrence9230 4 месяца назад

@@BC-th3mx Yes, it's recent performances that matter (you were pointing to all time performances, and I'd suggest the results of 20 years ago matter for little to nothing). And based on recent performances, I highly doubt Peru would have done any better against Belgium, Croatia or Morocco. Chile under Lasarte or Berizzo probably wouldn't have faired much better. Yes, under Gareca Chile are showing themselves to be dangerous again and I readily agree it will be very difficult for Canada to get a result there, even if Canada gets a proper coach in time for the tourney (with Biello....it's likely to be ugly). But my point is that Croatia and Morocco were very difficult sides, and I somehow doubt that Peru or Chile could have done what Brazil, Portugal and Spain could not. And the fact that Brazil, Portugal and Spain could not better Morocco or Croatia means that any suggestion that Canada's showing against that group was a failure is silly. Did you know that Herdman's sister took her own life just before the WC? The man was not able to be present. Yes, Biello is tactically incompetent, but once this group has a proper coach they will be a force to be reckoned with. Frankly, even without one they are still a very real threat on their day. But we'll just have to see how it plays out.

The Canadian Soccer Association finally has a permanent general secretary, so we're finally making some steps in the right direction from the federation standpoint. Still a long way to go, in that regard, but this year is looking up for us.
Our next goal is to get a permanent head coach before June to get into things quickly and start pushing forward with this squad.
I'll tell you right now, Canada is not looking to do anything at the Copa América other than gain experience against top-notch opponents.
Canada's priority right now, above everything else, is to get out of their group in 2026. Canada doesn't want to be the third ever host nation to be eliminated in the Group Stage at a World Cup, which means getting their house in order, and getting quality preparation in the lead up to 2026.
They're currently scheduled a friendly in June before the Copa against the Netherlands, and they're working on another against France. They also have a friendly in September against Mexico, and potentially another against the USA. Combine that with the Copa, and this is phenomenal prep for Canada in 2024.
Any performance at the Copa other than total devastation against all three of their group A opponents will be a sign of progress with the CanMNT. Period. Show that you can hang with the big boys, that's all we want. Literally anything above and beyond that is the gravy on our poutines.

all the things they’re saying are true but Canada but they don’t see that Canadian players have been waiting all their lives to prove that they can also play the game. Canada isn’t going to just sit and let these teams push them like they’re nothing. I see them giving these South American teams a hard time. Canada does have players the back line is definitely a problem but that being said with the attackers they have and the insane speed they have people are just look at them from a different perspective cuz Canada was never a soccer nation but in the past few years we have really craft great players we have the number one best player in North America and also the best striker in North America that’s nothing to brush off. I’m confident they’ll beat Peru and give chile a run and make them want the points. Canadas performance in the World Cup was not the best, but we also need to understand that the lacked experience at such a big stage. Now it’s different they’ll want to make up from that and yeah the World Cup was not what we wanted but we got the experience vs teams that were way out of their league. In 2020/2021, there was a lot of doubt for Peru. With Guerrero being very poor they founded Gianluca Lapadula, Italian with Peruvian roots. Gareca then decided it would be best for a 4-2-3-1 formation. This lead to the start of the comeback in World Cup qualifiers when Peru beat Ecuador 2-1 in Quito. This formation should be Peru’s formation going into the copa America this year. Let me try to build the best lineup for Peru using the best possible formation (4-2-3-1):
    GK - Gallese
    RB - Advincula
LB - O. Sonne (idk why you guys forgot about him)
    CB - A. Corzo

    CDM - Cartagena/Yotun
    LM - Grimaldo

1:03:45 Keep in mind that Canada's defensive line was experimented with against T&T. Both Laryea and Adakugbe were out to injury and Biello in his great wisdom decided this must win match was a perfect time to experiment with a new central CB. And tactically, Canada allowed T&T to play their defensive block, rush counter game plan uninhibited. It's hard to blame the defensive line for stupid tactical directions. But if Canada takes to field with proper tactics they are plenty capable to hold against Peru. Chile will be a challenge, for sure, but on their day, Canada has it within them to pull it off.

For Canada; OUCH!! I don't know how you guys don't recognize Tajon Buchanan? 1v1 in attack he gives any back line in the world trouble. Sure, it's unfortunate he's been in transition moving from Belgium to Inter Milan and hasn't been getting the minutes, but I guarantee you he'll still cause problems. It was him that made the winning goal against T&T happen - not Davies and not David. Fully agree though; unless we secure a proper coach post-haste, it's going to be ugly. Biello doesn't even seem to realize that tactics exist in football. But if Canada sets up in a defensive block and hits on counter they can cause problems with their speed for Peru and even Chile. The question is whether or not they can prevent Chile from scoring 2 or 3.

Canada on paper has the best squad it’s ever had. Is facing Netherlands and likely France right before the tournament. Not saying we get out of the group or even do well. But to be so negative when there has been clear improvement reminds me of all the negativity that was said before World Cup qualifying and look how that went

Doing well in qualifiers for a continent with a 4-3-23 record in WCs vs South America & thinking it matters is like thinking that winning a pickup basketball game w/ out of shape middle aged guys means you can beat LeBron & Steph. It doesn't even matter w/in Concacaf, the point is just to make the tournament, finishing "1st" is irrelevant, every other team from the region not only got a point but won a game

@@BC-th3mxto be respectful, re read my comment and try to find where I said that our qualifiers are any indication of how we will do in the copa. In fact I pointed out that we probably won’t do well. My point is that this commentary lacked the ability to see the positive in a side that since 2019 are and continue to turn a new leaf.

I feel like our criticism was fair:
      - The coach is completely unproven, Canada hasn't looked amazing under him
      - The attack is by far the best part of the team
      - The defense is poor
      - They have zero Copa or CONMEBOL experience
      - They have the World Cup champions, arguably the biggest dawgs in CONMEBOL, and an extremely physical Peru team in their group

The part of dissension in the Canada locker room is BS as is some of the other organization comments. The team has finally dispensed with the old guard and will experience the growing pains of the new. People criticize them for their WC appearance yet in their group was the second ranked team in the world and the other two teams went to the semi finals. Not exactly an easy group

For Peru, it seems like Fossati is incorporating players like Zanaletto, quispe, grimaldo, Castillo, sonne, and Bryan Reyna who are replacing the old guard for the new generation. So there have been changes with Fossati but he still hasn’t used the strongest lineup which I think he will use in these June friendlies against Paraguay and possibly Jamaica
