I know it doesn't sound like much when it's broken into 3 minute chunks, but those 29 years in improvement roughly equate to Joey being halfway down the straight to the Creg from Kate's... while McGuinness is crossing the start/finish. And since TT bikes don't have anything like ground effects etc like cars do, that improvement is made solely in mechanical grip and power. We know Joey was as fast as at least a young McGuinness (2000 Formula 1 TT) so that should help put into perspective how far bike technology came.

Averages of 129, 134 & 143 mph respectively for this section. It should be pointed out that Joey's Honda had a big camera strapped to his tank, probably 10 x bigger than a Go-pro or similar that would have been on McGuinness's bike. I don't think Joey would have been able to tuck in properly but he wasn't concerned as it was a demo/practice lap.The camera on Steve Hislop's bike would have been a fair lump attached to the fairing and could have knocked a few mph of top speed. I think the V-4 Victory average lap speed was about 110 mph with the lap record at that time about 115 mph. It interesting to see the smaller classes in the same practice session but Joey wasn't held up at all as he he passed them at 20 to 50 mph faster speeds without hesitation.

incredible ride with Joey, 29 years time span, road surface improvements, suspension and engine development and engine size....under one klm gained...

Very impressive riding by Joey when you take into account that in a 29 yr time frame, only a gain of 0.9 klm's was gained.

Seen this clip of Joey way back in 1985.. guy I worked with gave me some videos and this was on it.. went in to work next day, we started talking about it... I said the thing I noticed about Joey....... and we both said at exactly the same time.. " the space he gave other riders as he passed them"..we both burst out laughing..... coincidentally his name was also Stuart... hahaha

+NewportStudio Actually, it has little or nothing to do with it. A lot of people think it takes 'balls' or bravado to race at the TT or race anywhere. What it takes is, will and passion.
But more importantly it takes Visual Perception, and Spatial Judgment skills along with quick reaction/reflexes. That is what makes for excellent bike handling skills.
When you understand what skill set it requires, it is not not fear which is the biggest obstacle, but it is the ability to judge objects at any given time/distance. Situational awareness...
