I became a welder after I paid a fraud to weld some panels on a 69 mustang I had when I was younger. His social media was full of stolen content from other welders. He laid down the worst welds i have ever seen to this day. I decided to never trust anyone to work on my car and I purchased a mig welder at harbor freight and decided to learn to weld myself. I learned flux then moved on to mig then tig. Now I have my own fab shop where I make $120 per hour. All because someone wanted to rob me of $80.

Well Justin....your detour allowed me the time to amass the tools and just enough to try and follow along on a build. Funny how when I first started watching you it was to learn fabrication, and I still always come back here to look at how you actually assemble your joints and sequence your bends AFTER I see an interesting idea to try...lol I am stoked to see you make something gnarly dude.

yup. same sorta story here. haven't made the big leagues yet lol
high school, taking automotive & welding. dad is a welder. i dont really like welding all day. friend takes me out to the drag strip one night. we race our 16sec and slower cars. damn i was hooked. decided to go to ford asset thru the community college. worked at a ford dealer. wet myself on every mustang and the couple ford gt's that came thru. of course, i went and bought an old 1995 mustang. replaced basically every part under & in the car. years later, still working on cars lol its shiny luster is dull, but it pays the bills. i still have that car, but never drive it. like most guys, family takes the front burner.

Tig welding for me has helped me build a car that I'd dreamed of owning when I found out they existed, An SR20det converted R32 sedan. Not quite as expensive but If I couldn't tig weld well enough to be in the job I'm currently in I couldn't have done the fabrication on it let alone paid someone to do it. But it's such a sick feeling to see people getting hyped on the work you've done on their car too.

I often say now is the perfect time to try and learn something because the information is all on the internet! You are what I am talking about! It is the whole reason why I started my channel. Spreading knowledge! The knowledge that can be obtained through one video on youtube is incredible. Now I've been running my own trailer repair and heavy equipment service company for the past few years and I love it! Feels crazy to make money doing what I love. We all went through that 19 year old mindset. I was a local mechanic at 19 who got fired (found out many years later that my old Man got me fired as he wanted better for me than being greasy all the time) so in looking for work I took a job in the mail room at Western Union (it was 1982 so you took what you could get) and then a job in the computer room opened up that required lifting 70lb boxes of paper so I got the job, spent lunchtime reading the manuals and 'sucked up" all the knowledge I could ) and spent the last 41 years in IT. It interested me, just as welding did to you, If your job is interesting to you, you'll take more pride in it and learn to excel and do better with it. I mean, if your job was cleaning toilets you will move on to another job in a couple of weeks.

Hey, realize this is off-topic, but dyou have any advice for bending 1.5in 1/8in wall aluminium tubing with a manual bender? I need to use a sway bar to lever the tubing out of the bender after, and I found that the aluminium tubing springs back once it's removed (assuming that's why it's so tight to remove). Trying to do a 90, and it turns out about 85 degrees even though in the bender it is bang on 90. Definitely using the right dies.

Your story is almost verbatim on my current situation. Always wanted to weld and am I to performance cars and I’m currently a garbage truck mechanic. My job is basically “do whatever you gotta to get that truck on route” and we all weld but have a primary welder who’s really skilled. I basically went up to him and said I wanna learn show me your ways and have been doing it since. Not all the time but when I can get it in plus on my own stuff. I jumped on the first hood tig welder deal i could find and since then have been watching your channel religiously. That and I tell me wife I want a car, she says no right as I’m pulling in the driveway with it lol. I always knew I wanted to weld and whether that shapes my future or is just a great tool to help me with my car hobby I’m fine with cause I couldn’t be happier with it 🤙

If I could have been introduced to TIG back when I was a kid, I would have fab'd all kinds of chassis design and parts . As it was, I was a mechanic with my dad and heli arc was extremely expensive . And those guys were referred to as gods of welding . They seemed to be able to name their own price like a doctor . So it was pretty much off limits . Unless you were to go to a school to learn . But I really never made the time . Although I understood suspension dynamics and fab'd a couple K frames and other suspension parts from rec tube and such, I didn't put complete trust in the wire feed concept for strength though . Now with the cost being where it is, and the instruction as it is now, if I was a kid now the sky would be the limit ... Oh yeah I'm 67 now, and have been learning TIG for the last year and a half and love it . I've learned a lot from you and Jody Collier, along with a few others . :)

Well, I got into welding because of an olt ('69) Volkswagen Van doing MIG/MAG. This kinda lit a fire for welding. Car was sold, went to university, did other things and a million years later i found a place where a few friends and I had our DIY garage. And an old MIG/MAG machine. For me cars became a target for welding practice because of love for welding. At some point i got into TIG because it's more demanding and more fun. Now I'm an electronics designer, freelancer and do talks about welding and watch a lot of YT welding channels like this one here to learn more.

I grew up in FL with a decent car modding scene but also broke i followed some similar steps. Now living in CA and their draconian auto laws I see it not only impacting fun, but also crushing the future engineers, fabricators, and designers.
So many of us grew up just wanting to do some cool stuff to our cars and that DIY ethic ends up leading down a road that can not only help us, but lead to becoming more productive members of society. I'm just a hobbiest in the air force as a cop, but plenty of other guys that work at Lockheed, Prat n Wit, Raytheon, NASA, SpaceX etc started with "air intake make car go fast Unga bunga" if there isn't a decent outlet to peak the interest of the youth it's hard to have tangible motivation to get to engineering and fabrication.

#1 Good to see you got your dream car / goal. She's sweet!
At 15 I use to see a guy with a 70's Trans-am at school ...Always wanted after that a newer Trans-am / Camaro I worked at local condo pools Cleaning them And testing the Ph Cleaning the grounds on summer break Had a paper route with 362 customers ( 4 trips out of the house to deliver) Done snow shoveling in the winter months
    - At 16 I saved up about $5,000 Someone offered a 1986 K-Car for $600 ...Nope A rusty mustang...Nope
I found a 1983 Trans-am with a V8 T-tops Everything worked $800 But had signs of rust (Canadian winters/salt) -- In trade school we had welding class Autobody/Mech Made a deal with the Autobody shop teacher That come in on sat for 4 hours to grind, And make patch welds Painted the car 8 weeks later myself ( Hunter Green met /w-Gold BBS rims) And yes I had a few runs But become a pro at wet sanding and polishing lol Had the car 11 years And sold it
The project now is a 2005 Blazer 2dr 4x4 that has quite the amount of upgrades And converted to a camper in the back ..My welding is not that great And its been years and years ..( 1 Body mount has a hole behind it at the floor ) Need to replace the rocker panel And lower 1/4 And want to angle iron weld a roof rack ...If i pass this I will also install a rear swing arm where the ZR-2's have a spare tire And add on a gas can .........Going to buy a cheap 110a welder And play around with different sticks And try to hone in on sweet spot welds before i start

Anyone care to provide a little input on a particular make and model? You see basically the same story over and over again. You have an interest and you need skills to manage it.
Same for me. I bought a race car that was way worse than the seller said. I got some books, tips from my father and a will that was hard to break. I rebuilt the engine, welded up the body and modified the suspension. It looked ugly and was still one of the slowest cars on the track. You cant take a daily driver to a F1 race and expect to win. I built another car that was a little faster and raced it in the divison it was built for. A constant lack of money and too expensive parts led me to build anti roll bars, drive shafts, suspensions etc for 20 years. I have National, Nordic and European champions amongst my clients, so obviously I was better at making car parts than racing.
Today I'm relearning to weld since I started building a few motorcycles for myself. Welding has always been (and still is) a mystery for me. Milling, turning, designing..... not a problem, but I will never be a really good welder.

So i learned to weld for one reason. I like mini trucks, custom cars, and go karts. First thing i learned to weld on was a 96 chopped and body dropped ford ranger v6 2wd with a cusom 4 link setup bagged with drag blocks and train horns ahh i miss the late 90's. Simple step 1 cut roof off daily driver. Step 2 figure out how to put it back at 5in lower at age 16 with less than 200$ in my pocket.
Pennysaver got a used lincoln mig 140 off a drug addict for 120$ and air gas rental for C25 .025 wire and tips. And showing pictures of the project to smith a guy that owned a local metal supplier he help me get a few off cuts of the right Guages of steel and metal working tools he helped a lot with fab stuff still good friend's to this day im 38 now lol. But a few mini truck mags and iron works mag had a few basic rules to MIG welding. With small pointers from my grandpa when i visited him up north and i got it down pretty good. 18mo later i was winning trophies at car shows and setting the freeway on fire dragging sold 8x8x8in blocks of magnesium on my frame rails.
I had 4in drop front I-beams. With rear mounted bags using 3 cam plates and 4 push rods the rear was a triangle 4 link setup with the bags on the lower links. The train horns are real K5LA with a 1.5in dump valve a custom plate replaced my A/C with a semi engine driven air compressor feeding 2 custom tanks i made from 3/16 wall 4in steel pipe with 2 stacked 1/4in plate welded to the ends with 2 passes fyi the tanks replaced the factory frame rails from the cab back.
Stacked on top with 3/16 plate welded to the outside and 2in wide strips on the inside where needed this heal the entire rear suspension and all the loads never had a hickup even at 130psi.
2 tanks directly feed the horns 2 tanks feed the smc valves for my bags a valve between them and the supply line lte me isolate the suspension if i had any leaks but was never a problem the sheer output from the compressor made the tanks almost not needed.

I was raised around gear heads , had Uncle's that drag raced My Dad had some cool cars and trucks , I had always wanted a Chevy Nova ,but I got into drugs around 15 years old none the less when I was 23 I purchased a 1972 Nova SS from my Mom who originally bought the car for my older brother, she was paying on the car and he went and bought a 1983 Chrysler k car , so she said she was going to sell it , i ended up getting it for what she owed on it $1,000 , i always planned on building it up but being poor and partying a lot wasn't a good match. Lol but I still managed to put a bigger cam in it as well as a better intake and a 650 Holly, the local police seemed to single me out every time I went to town , fortunately I never spent the night in jail for anything, God surly was watching out for me , I still have my Nova , but getting married and having kids it's been sitting for a long time , I have slowly been accumulating parts for an engine build and interior parts . I learned to weld in my early 20's and have been wrenching most of my life . I'm in my early 50's now and really want to get back to working on my Nova , I have a lot of projects going on but do what I can when I can .

I most enjoy seeing your videos in which you perform skilled work. My enjoyment in viewing talking videos is less. I recently enjoyed two of your videos involving great tig welding and great design work and sheet metal fabrication. IMO technical topics are your strong suit. Charismatic blah blah blah blah you should not attempt.

Thats awesome how that all worked out. If your ever in houston tx We'd love to have you out to our shop if only for a few minutes. We have 2 newer machines(early 2000's) but other than that everything in our fab shop is from the 80's to 20's. And we still use most everything. Just saying if you want a blast from the past press break or sheer hell everything else its a pretty cool place to visit.

Similar story here i had been working various jobs from 16-22 ish with no real direction
I had a little money in my pocket and was browsing eBay and I seen a car for sale and I had to have it better yet I recognised the speed camera in the background of the pictures
So I knocked on every door on the street found the owner and struck a deal and I was the proud owner of a rust bucket
And basically broke because of it
So after releasing how expensive it was to get fixed I thought hmmmm this isn't a bad racket and started applying for jobs as an apprentice 12 years later I run my own shop and still have a rust bucket 😅

That part when you said you're a welder and you grew up in a broken home... I started laughing and thought, aren't we all? I think it's a prerequisite. Anyway, keep chasing those dreams!

Thanks for sharing more about you. I for one find that I will watch the channels that I like the person behind them. Sure I'm looking for a variety of different content, but the ones I watch the most are the people I like. I'm looking forward to more fabrication since that was drew me here in the first place. Don't get me wrong as I do like the welding content and want to learn more and get better at it. Molten metal is very cool, but is one part of the equation to the end item. And my dream car is actually I car I had in my youth, a 1969 AMC Javelin with many modifications. It was rusting out and I had an AMX to merge it with, but was seriously committed to kart racing and ended up selling both cars. Still racing karts too!

I really enjoy hearing stuff like this, I had a job at Danbury Competition Engines back in the early 80's, I was there for 4 years, Little did I know how much I learned from Joe Lapine. That 35 yrs later I still call him my Boss and call him 1 a month or so to thank him how much I learned from him! And I met him by accident when he was eating lunch at a shop I stopped by at to locate some parts.

I can relate some what. Started welding school right after
HS because I like cars. And in my mind cars and welding go together. So now I'm a 24yo mobile welder with a trailer and a small company that is starting to take flight
