my guitar case hinges have rivets and I have broken drill bits and whatever you call that punch, they break in half... you can't drill a round surface everything. just slips right off, been working this for weeks now...
I have one of these in my toolbox & have used it 2 or 3 times. It takes too much time to go to my toolbox, disassemble the tool, install the right drill bit (which must be threaded), the right nosepiece, install on drill, then go back to my workplace and drill out the rivets. By the time I do all that I could drill out a dozen or more rivets the right way, the old fashioned way. This guy says "you're gonna miss, and you're gonna damage your sheet." No, not if you drill straight, correct depth, with the right diameter bit, which is what we learn in A&P school. This tool is a good idea but it takes too long to manipulate in a time-sensitive environment on a commercial jet work card. This guys not even holding the drill straight in a demo video.

@@gossumx If you've literally got several hundred rivets, or other fasteners, to drill out then the guy that did it should be ass-kicked out the door. Anyway, the rivet removal tool in this video would probably be beneficial in your situation. All you have to do is remove & replace the drill bit as they become dull.
@@crooked-halo Hah, yep. But in this case, it's a school bus. I needed to remove the wall panels so that I could cut it in half and raise the roof a couple of feet taller. I ended up getting away with using an air chisel to knock them off, at the expense of a little damage to the surrounding sheet metal. Geeze, it was a pain though. And ended up being closer to 1500 to remove 😭
I assumed that this was for drilling out CherryMax-type rivets, not plain ole AN rivets. I drill out a lot of AN rivets, I don't need this, but I thought it might be handy for blind rivets. Oh, and seriously bad example with the safety glasses but hey, you are loooking goood!

ATS does have a very similar tool for drilling out blind rivets. The main difference is that the nosepiece is serrated to keep the rivet from spinning.

On the job a smile should always be replaced. Your instructor shouldn't let you use this tool in class. He/she will want you to learn the right way, the old fashioned way, to drill out a rivet. A DME won't let you use this during your "A" practical test. On the job the tool in this video takes too long to disassemble & re-assemble, though it does work well if you're not in a time-sensitive environment.
