I can appreciate the collectors standpoint, as I have collected for 20+ years. However, back when I started it was a hobby. Since the pandemic, it has become a business model. I can no longer afford my hobby. I came to a crossroad of having to maintain my hobby at more expense and try to beat those that have made this their business model while hunting, something I have determined is a losing battle, as I dont have the time or determination that resellers have. So I made the choice to downsize and curate to games I feel I would want to play. I have basically given up on buying/collecting any cartridge based games, due to cost and have found they can all be played via emulation, many times better than the originals, assuming you dont get hung up on playing a game in its original form. Even then everdrives do the trick. Yes its cool to see your collection, but if all you want to do is play the games, like I did, there are other avenues. I enjoy your videos, as they remind me of why I collected in the first place, but they also remind me why collecting now isnt viable as the hobby it once was. If I only knew how this market would blow up 20 years ago when I was buying lots of a dozen boxed NES for under $100. C'est la vie keep up the good work, Y2K.

I am in the same boat. Where I took NES, SNES, PS1 for granted because they were in so much abundance. Guess what's happening now? People are doing that with PS4, XB1, and Switch they are in so much abundance.... and think they'll be there but things change fast. Collect what you like and emulate the rest.

There are a lot of new retro games coming out. Xeno crysis snes, shantae gba, king of demons snes, new translation of cybernator for snes. It is a great time to be a retro gamer!

What's your take on backing up your games to your computer by game ripping so that you can use modded consoles to play your games so there is no wear and tear on the original disc

I’ve also shifted to retro over the last year or so. Games are getting more expensive, but requiring day 1 patches or have bugs that get fixed later and it just seems like I’m paying the most money for the worst version of a game when I buy on day 1.
For me, modern games can always be bought digitally and on sale at a later date.
I’d rather see that $70+ go towards a boxed NES game that’ll be played and displayed on my shelves for years.

I'm still seeing Journey to Silius at around $80 I think at one of my local stores. I've not seen any or many Neo Geo games in stores. Maybe a few at one store some time back.

I agree with you I think retro is way better. I started collecting in 2019 things like 32x/Saturn, ps1 rpgs, Atari even. I think it will keep going up.

I just like to curate my collection. I have about 20 switch games that can go. My OG xbox just died and I am in no rush to get another right away so I may sell some xbox games. Slimming it down from time to time makes me feel better about the hobby. I can't play all of these games so selling is good from time to time.

I sold off all my ps1, ps2, all loose n64, snes, nes and all genesis approx 1000 games still leaving me with approx 2800 games. I don't regret it and will never go back to buying retro stuff. Prices are still high and I refuse to pay what stores and people want. I now only collect new gen stuff. I still have all my psvita, jaguar and virtual boy and alot of boxed consoles. My goal is to sell off probably another 1500 games and just collect japanese retro.

I ran into some trouble also last year, first to go was ps5 then Switch and I don’t even miss em! I did however just get the series x, but nothing beats the classics man! I’d ditch current gen any day over my classics

I recently got Silius on the Evercade. really wanted to play that. I really agree with you though.
I too have shifted back to retro games as well. I've slowed on switch collecting considerably. PS1, PS2 and Dreamcast for me

I agree with your reasons for collecting retro games 100%. I do think some Switch games will also be harder to come by because the Switch is a highly collectible system and there are many low print titles that people will covet.

HUGE patches, VERY long hours games to finish one game, incomplete games, prices going up to $80 ???, im getting old, the current generation sucks more and more PS4 still king and little tablet called the Nintendo Switch beats the PS5 in the games library department and digital taking over more and more every year that passes by ! Those are my reasons !

Consoles used to have on/off switch. Now you have all the problems pc's have. Once collecting has become 2 years of your life it's harder to give up. I get memories from playing, collecting, going to japan, gaming markets the lot.

I've gone all digital since the pandemic. Physical is just too expensive and not worth it in my case. Games are meant to be played and enjoyed. Doesn't matter if it is via authentic hardware or emulated. Currently have a MiSTer FPGA hooked up to a CRT with every video game ever made up until the PS1 generation. I also have a hacked PS2 plus a Saturn and Dreamcast with ODEs installed. They bring plenty of enjoyment to myself and my kids.

Emulation is perfect for playing games. Even thou not exactly legal. But that aside. Digital shops are a scam. We don’t actually ‘own’ the content. We are basically purchasing a license which the platform holder can remove at their discretion.
We can be removed from access to our digital downloads at any point. Just recently Sony announced that some movies will no longer be accessible despite users ‘purchasing’ them.
When collecting that’s a hard pill to swallow

I have almost every retro system and they are either modded with the entire library of games or running Krikzz multicarts with the entire library. HOWEVER...I am physically collecting for PS2 and I have no idea why.

There is no point in returning to retro gaming in 2024. Everything upto the wii u can be easily with some exceptions.

I believe we are about the same age if I'm not a bit older than you. What you are speaking of is Nostalgia. I was under the impression that you already got all the 'retro' games you wanted since you've been collecting. The beauty about NES, SNES, GENESIS, NEO GEO, is their library is finite and very relatively small. You aren't going for full sets. So it should be something that you can complete. MOST of us then say 'ok what's next I need my next fix'.
What I will say as I've seen it happen too often. DO NOT WAIT to purchase PS4, Switch, etc because they are in abundance now. LIKE everything else. They'll be GONE before you know it. TONS of games will get discarded and thrown out because they are deemed worthless NOW. Only to find out in 10yrs they are sought after. BUT as an older gamer, I won't get NOSTALGIC about Bendy and the Ink Machine on PS4 because it's not one of the first games I experienced as a growing person. I WILL get Nostalgic for Journey to Silius on the NES because that was supposed to be a Terminator game and it's an action shooter with robots and I 'discovered' it in my youth.
I wrote a novel here but net net.... ALWAYS BUY BARGAIN PRICED GAMES if you love video games.

Good advice..its very much a nostalgia thing of what you liked when young . I also only collect what i want to play so maybe more of a hobbyist.

There is definitely a flooded abundance and market of switch games, I literally dont buy switch games unless they are half price or more, I just finished ps2, I still wishlist want Castlevania SOTN black label and marvel vs. capcom both cib for ps1 but only want it if I see it out on the wild, OG xbox im 8 games away from being content with my overall collection amd i just finished collecting for xbox 360. I really am getting the games I wanted modern games i agree to just wait unless it was so limted run bs that got scalped out

Its so weird to see people find retro games at US Gamestops. I dont understand why gamestop Canada is so trash, you can't find anything lower than last gen for sale. Its like they just destroy inventory prior to last gen
