- I was asked to make a video on the correct way to lock a bicycle. At first I though this pointless as most people know how to secure their pride and joy. A short walk around a market town proved me wrong. In this short guide we look at the best methods to help avoid theft of your bike.

Thanks Roy and Wendy, never a problem to reminded. Especially with some humour. We were lucky enough to have a holiday in Croatia this year. I saw plenty of bikes and ebikes not locked just leaning where their owners had left them. On speaking to a local about locking his bike, he said "why would you need to do that ?". Such a shame !
I am happy to say that I would never dream of using my bike to go shopping. I am so old now that it's even a bloody effort to go shopping in the car.

One piece of advice I'd like to add is I have seen instances (not many I admit) of bikes locked to poles where the bike can be lifted up and over the pole or something similar. With the desirability of lightweight bikes, this is something to be aware of.

A timely video, it's just a shame the scrotes make it necessary to go to so much trouble.
You're right in that if they really want it they'll take your bike, even with the best lock.
Although my bikes are old I don't want to lose them but only use a cheap lock as a deterrent. Better unlocked bikes nearby.
I saw how easy locks were defeat when I'd locked my bike and then lost the key. The restaurant didn't have any tools but the manager said he had someone in the kitchen who could help. He came out all dressed in his whites and just undid the QR on the seat post and used the seatpost to thread through the cable and keep twisting until the lock gave way. From start to finish 5 minutes.
He'd obviously done it before, maybe in a different type of employment!😟
That reminds me of a time I was involved (in a small way) with the production of Star Wars, The Return of The Jedi, being shot at Borehamwood. I locked my keys in my car, so the Construction Manger called one of his freelance carpenters who unlocked my door in seconds. I was asked to look the other way so I couldn’t tell you what he did. Clearly, the contractor had a second career when he wasn’t building film sets 😀
that was good Wendy (and your faithful sidekick of course) .... I often see bikes not securely locked up. most of them are the sort Roy dubbed "not worth stealing" but people do anyway, and even if not valuable, inconvenient to find it gone, as it were. incidentally, noticed that the example photo of 'the bike no-one would want steal' had a lock on it. when I lived in a city I had removable pedals. they wouldn't stop anyone making off with the machine, but would sure prevent them RIDING off. these days I seldom have the need to park the bike anywhere, but when I do, no lock.... I figure a) it's not expensive enough for anyone to bother.... and b) how many would-be bike-thieves would get more than 2 metres on a fixie?
Yes, I think the fixie would confuse both brain cells

I'd never leave my road bike anywhere but my commuter i use 2 abus 1 chain 1 steel cored one(just over a kg combined) you can't do much more than that D-locks are the gold standard but they aren't very flexible unless you take an additional cable then you just end lugging too much about.
I watched your air tag video but bought a couple of Knog Scout alarm/tracker that uses the Apple Find It system. Maybe worth a look from you. If I can’t see it I won’t leave it so always locked within sight but the Knog Scout just adds something extra
I have 2 kryptonite fahgettaboudit locks, plus a alarmed halfords lock, and now hiplok chain all gold standard, plus 2 cables that came with the kryptonite locks. It makes me sad to see some bikes parked in Peteborough city centre with just a cheap lock, around the frames only.

@RideWithRoy but I have 3 bike my manual road bike, my tempest gravel and my new bike, when I leave them at home, I tend to connect them all together with the locks, when out with new just just use hiplok. Usually used the alarmed lock and 1 kryptonite when I used to go camping. It always worried me about waking ilup to find bike gone, but at least if alarm goes off it would wake me up.
