  • The Sacramento River system is home to the only winter-run Chinook salmon in the world. This unique population is cut off from its historical spawning and rearing habitat, and faces many other threats, but efforts are underway to help it recover.

What may be the healthiest protein for people? One is wild salmon, along with other oily fish like sardines. And if we'll only take care of salmons' habitat, they'll swim right back to us after growing large in the ocean.

Any News's on how the young salmon have been doing in the flooded rice fields? Are their numbers increments? And how long has this project been going on ?and the last comment is how were the numbers in the Sacramento and feather rivers this year (2020).

Back in the late 80's, I wrote the software that managed the water flows, temperatures, lake levels, etc., for Shasta, Keswick, Trinity, Whiskeytown and other dams (SIRIS). I had no knowledge or understanding of just how critical these water flows truly were to wildlife. Since then, I've often seen these waterways and dams in the news and have thought often about my tiny role years ago. I only wish I knew then what I know now. The challenge of meeting water demands and all the expectations put on the Central Valley Project is enormous. Of course, this isn't my real name (not important) but even then, it was a challenge and since that time, climate change has had an enormous impact.

its not the only winter run chinook. maybe the biggest. There is winter run chinook all up and down the oregon coast. If there is a good fall run in a river, you can bet there is some winter run chinook.

It’s sad that the salmon can’t spawn naturally in the mountain rivers
