Awesome vid Jesse, would love to see a bit of a race breakdown from your perspective, and thoughts on what you might do differently or plan to do if you complete again next year.
Thanks. Probs won't do a video on that, but I'll answer here. To do better, I would: - train more through the middle of the year, so I'm not coming from such a low starting point - more cold water in the feedzone. Plapp and others wer dumping cold water all over themselves every lap, I only had ice. Would have an extra helper in feedzone with cold water purely to assist in keeping core temp down - more caffeine. Only carried 2x Beta Fuel Nootropic gels, had one 2 hours in, and 3 hours in. Should have had one at hours 1, 2, 3 and 4. I could feel that I wanted more caffeine - more road races in training. I missed a few local road races because I had events on weekends. Would have been good to get to them for an extra bit of conditioning to deal with the race pace & surges That's about it, everything else was spot on IMO.
@@nerocoaching interesting to see how much is race day specific. Thanks for replying btw. Also was thinking about what you said on Nero show about should you keep training this hard and racing this hard. As a former semi professional athlete that gave up on my old sport, just go for it Jesse you have 80 years left in your life to grow your business and have a more normal life. Just my 2 cents, anyway looking forward to seeing how your racing goes this year. 🤩🤩🤩.
This is the most valuable/informative video about cycling training or endurance training in general as I have ever seen! (and I have seen a LOT...) Few points stands out: 1. Frequency is over everything. To get fitter, the simplest/easiest approach is just, run/cycle/swim everyday. This is the most overlooked aspect of the training and is my biggest "discovery" of my own. I made the most of my fitness gain when I simply challenged myself to cycle or run everyday. It's more effective than anything else, like workout structure or even intensity distribution. Unfortunately cycling is too much time consuming that I couldn't "afford" to do everyday, but luckily running is very feasible. I now run everyday and the fitness gained from running everyday actually translate very well into cycling, it's more effective than when I only do 2-3 big rides (with complicated "training" target) every week and rest all the other days. 2. The volume is HUGE. We all heard the anecdote that pros training up to 20 hrs a week, but most sources couldn't reveal more. Your video is the first time that I actually have seen someone actually doing that in real life, with everything fully disclosure. This eagle view is so sick... That I actually have a hard time to believe when I saw your 20hr/week "build" and 27hr/week "sharp" phase. This is just... Insane... It's not something that you can do on your part time. It's a full time job. 3. We don't deserve it (400w FTP), and shouldn't worry about it. After seeing the time and effort commitment you put in there to "get back" that 400w, for the first time in my head the voice says "oh man you should let this go, it just doesn't worth it". I don't even want to do this anymore. However there's also a big relief, that if guys like you can only maintain a "321w FTP" when you are just living your life, then we normalings should be more than happy to just have something like 300w and enjoy riding. Really great effort into this and this video itself! Keep doing it!
Wow, managed to squeeze a wedding into a 5 months 27hr/week training effort. Good race result for sure! Kudos to you and your lovely angelically patient wife!
Wonderful! As a numbers guy, really appreciate the detail. You’re hitting numbers that are long gone for me (65 yo), but loved every second of this. Congratulations on your training and success!
Really like the video and the fascinating insights into your training and preparation mate! I think the fact that you started off in mid-August with relatively low fitness levels shows that you don't always need to have your fitness at 100% the whole season, and that it is ok to take periods of rest in the season if your target events/races are several months away - assuming of course you already have a strong aerobic foundation from years of riding.
Yep exactly. Although I'm at the absolute limit of what I can progress in a relatively short amount of time. If I wanted to do any better, I'd have to train more consistently all year so I'm not starting from so far behind when I start ramping it up
Thanks for this video, so much more insightful than the sensory overload of most other training videos and you really boiled it down to the most important things and did mention why things worked for you specifically. Often people talk about doing 18 hour training weeks as if that is normal for everyone and forget that most people didn't have a previous 400 watt ftp, more like 200. Also quite motivational, I was thinking about the possibility to raise my 305 ftp (all time high) to 350 and wasn't sure if that was too much of a goal for a time crunched athlete, but this motivates me to just go for it, even with limited training time
Glad to have learned a bit more about your training. Found my way here from a couple of the guests you've had on your podcast/other channel with your buddy. Appreciate you taking the the time to walk us through your training leading up to your A event.
You 'talk the talk, walk the walk', a clear demonstration of commitment and effort which brought about a very successful outcome. how many pro teams in that race had failures on the day, hot heads, poor tactics, maybe riders who just didn't prepare as well, the wrong mindset, where here you are a one man band, supremely prepared, don't be surprised if you get a call from some pro team outfits who want you to coach their riders. Just shows unless you can demonstrate what you say just shut up.
Hi Jesse. Just want to say I really enjoyed this video. Not many people make these videos and I think this might be a gap in yourube cycling. The insights and personal preferences aren't shared commonly. Just one point that I wanted to add with the cutting fibre the day before. I found that if I cut fibre out 3 days before the race I am able to loose 1-3kg depending how much fibre I've been eating previously day to day. Not only do I feel lighter, but I actually am. Maybe just something others might want to consider. Once again keep up the work!
Mate, that was a brilliant and extremely interesting watch. Really enjoyed it! Big well done on a first class preparation and execution!! Just a wee follow up from the Nero show and your 'what shall i do now?' I know its easy for me to say but you should capitalise on all those gains and see how far you can push things 😀👍👌
Sincere congrats mate! Nailed the training, the race, and the vid prep to bring this video content at the end of it all. Making Sydney proud! You scored with a sauna in the building, too.
Thank you for those insights Jesse, really makes one appreciate the consistency and dedication required for one to be a part of the mix during road nats in a competitive country. Also, wow you are quite an athlete! Cheers from Italy
Really nice vid! Halfway through it I realised I had actually watched the aussie nats back in january, from Europe, as there were no other races broadcasted at the time. Well done!
Oh man I needed this. Racing 1 month away and got sick. Ftp 345... trying to get to 360 about same weight as you. So frustrating. Going to do what you did.
Excellent video, it’s great to see how you’ve done it and that it’s about simplicity, consistency and also knowing your body and tailoring to what you feel. Thanks for sharing all this Jesse 👍
Kind of gives me a look at what was available to me 1/2 a life ago (just not the tools to acquire the data naturally) had I really wanted it. Now, at masters age, husband, father, career, home handyman, grad school, this doesn't even look adaptable or scalable to my current situation. Not racing on the road anymore and I let my TT bike go this spring. Don't do CX b/c most races are on Sunday and that is not an option. So right now struggling with notion of why am I still doing 7hrs/wk (to avg 1hr/day). Most of it now is easy. Don't have any events forthcoming. Do not know what the next chapter is. Always hit a wall @ 300. I always hit a wall on weight (and get sick) when i flirt with 180lb. Never have unlocked the key to what makes my gut/digestive system happy (or angry). Guess a bit lost on what to do next. I have picked up a MTB just to do something different (and less time on dangerous roads) but I do not like going fast in the woods. Admittedly, I am terribly afraid of diabetes (and other health issues that come with age) and also desire never to go back to where i was health/weight wise @ mmmm say 23 to 33yo. Best wishes, -U10 PS - Nice touch with the BurnNotice
One it the best videos on RUclips imo. Do you think a similar periodisation but similar weekly structure would work for someone working with 10-12 hours of volume Vs what you were able to get in? Ty for the content.
Super interesting to see how its done. Thanks for posting and showing all these insights. Amazing the gains you got just in the endurance phase. Shows consistency is super important rather than big long rides periodically. 6.6w/kg for 7mins is super impressive! 5w/kg for the same duration is hard enough I find!
This was a great video Jesse. A couple of things that stood out to me are the amount of endurance (I incresed mine this year relative to my 40 hr/week job), and doing intervals toward the end of your ride (I'll start experimenting with that).
Good stuff, obviously the exact training would kill an average club racer but taking the process as a guide its useful. Getting the endurance done is the hardest thing for me but I can see the value, particularly after a mate came back from a 3 week loaded tour and smashed us in a cx race last weekend. I am one of those riders who prefers to feel less than totally fresh before a race , not sure if this is psychological or physical. Tight muscles and tendons might help power? Cheers.
Jesse really appreciate the effort you went to presenting the vid and thorough explanation. Hats off to you. I find it very interesting and just shows the effort you have to make at top national level.
Great video, bringing detail on how you built up your pro level fitness in an very understandable way. Even though my fitness level will never get be as good (never!), it motivates me to think more about how to approach my MAML fitness. Thank you for that and taking the time to invest in making this video. It shows how you probably also approach your coaching. Looking forward to the next one. Only comment my wife had: does het really like it, since he never smiles 😊?
I love this video! The dedication to train and weight loss has been broken down into small digestable parts that make it look doable, albeit with proper time management and rest. Bookmarked and something to consider following after my holiday trip this festive season (Chinese New Year)! Cheers Jesse!
This channel has offered a lot of the specific type of content explaining what it actually is. Like with fueling. Plenty of videos about carbs and how much but so little about what people actually take to a ride. All this theory but no practice. I'm a mountainbiker looking to apply actual effective training into trail riding. There's so much more knowledge available compared to 5-6 years ago. Have been actively watching content for about 6 months now and I have a pretty good grasp on how I need to ride for results.
very inspiring, love your simple and efficient approach to training with a lot of base and this one effort every weekend. For the endurance ride: do you actually pay attention to your heart rate/power data, or just ride how you feel? In the first case, what would be the zone you wanna stay in? I noticed that your avg heart rate went down on endurance rides as you got fitter, noticed the same thing with myself: a 135 bpm feels like nothing when you're not fit yet, but the same heart rate feels almost too high for Z2 a couple of weeks later when the fitness is kicking, although theoretically your max rate doesn't change, so I guess its not the parameter one should look at? Thanks!
Easy to estimate FTP myself based on the 1h efforts and the other ride data, would be +/- 3 watts. Didn't do any FTP tests, although some of those 1h efforts were pretty hard, technically not SST getting into zone 4
Was a pleasure watching you in Buninyong - thank you the video mate. Incredibly helpful info! Plan to give the fondo a real crack next year after racing it for the first time.
Great video Jesse. A lot of work definitely went into it. Really interesting and insightful. Is there anyway that you could do a short video and the supplements that you took and why? Performance and health benefits etc. Thanks again.
Great video Jesse. Really interested in how in your initial 10 week phase you had no time off at all. You mention the recovery aspect around 6 min but I'm really interested if you could go into even more depth on your approach "recovering as you go"
Boring Endurance for 3-5 hours is a KILLA! I try to increase mine from 2hrs to 3 right now. So hard! I can knock out intervalls all day. Love em. But real zone2.....Kudos!
Thanks for the insightful video. Are you going to attempt the 5-2 Nils van DP structure next season? Would be interesting to see how that sort of structure would compare to the "normal" one.
Lots of details and interesting ways to train. I think this is the 1st cycling video about an event that never said the exact result. I guess you were pleased with whatever the placement was, so way to go!
Awesome stuff, thanks for putting together and sharing! Would love to see how to set up a similar optimal training plan but for those of us that can maximum set aside 10 hours of training per week.
I am a triathlete. If I could go from 4w/kg to 5.4w/kg, I have been at 4w/kg, I would stop running and swimming instantly. Not sure if this is relevant for me. Currently training around 15hrs/week between all 3 disciplines. highest guys in our sport are at 400w ftp. Would like your opinion on this. Dude if I could take 21 weeks and go from 4 to 5w/kg I would do it in a heart beat
How are you only taking 2 days off the bike when sick? I find I have to take 4-5 days at least to get better, otherwise it just hits me so much harder. Or am I maybe over-reacting and can do low-Z2 when still having a few symptoms?
If you were to gain new fitness, what would you do? Would you add more intensity on the base phase? like instead of having a sweetspot phase, you'll replace it with a vo2max interval perhaps?
Hey Jesse! Really awesome video. Apart from the content of your training, which i completely agree with, I really think you did a fantastic job walking us through it and explaining us why you did what and how. Kinda made me want to sign up for your coaching ahaha 😂
Looks like a killer training block! I wish I had the time to train that much, was able to get my power up to 330 after just a few months of riding, but work always gets in the way of staying consistent. I know I could easily hit 400 watts if there were only some way to have the time to do it. Any advice?
Nobody can tell me Pantani, Armstrong and Ulrich trained on this deep level of science & structure back 25 years ago which makes Vingegaards and Pogacars fitness a lot more convincing, giving the fact that you’re absolutely crushing it yet aren’t even close to their abilities. This is nuts
Didn't get any cramps. There's not much you can take to prevent cramps, adequate fuelling and all the training on the conditioning side of things helped reduce the chance of cramping.
Hey Jesse, love the videos, tons of useful info. Random question: Do you ever schedule two training sessions in one day? If I did an interval session really early AM, what type of workout would you pair it with late in the afternoon if anything at all?
I don't often schedule double days. Most of us have enough going on in life to try and get a ride in 5, 6 days a week, let alone stacking double days in there too. I don't know many riders who require double days to get adequate training loads
Some riders use commutes by bike as training, so that may be a useful. But that's more because it makes sense logistically, it's not something I'd encourage anyone to do just for the sake of it
Great video, very informative and it's super interesting to see your approach! I'm at 81 kg at the moment as well and your vid has motivated me to try harder to shed the extra 7 kg! Just one question regarding your initial 10 week build. You mention one sweet spot session a week but looking at the average power you were doing each week, it looks to me more like a threshold session (coggan zone 4)?
Congrats on the wedding, Jesse. I don't know how you managed to squeeze in a wedding. A couple of questions. You averaged 17 hours or so per week. If I can only do 6 hours per week, should I do more sweet spot? I too had a long layoff. My CTL is zero right now. When you say endurance, do you mean zone 2 rides (55% - 75% of FTP)?
Awesome vid Jesse, would love to see a bit of a race breakdown from your perspective, and thoughts on what you might do differently or plan to do if you complete again next year.

Crazy numbers. Just with a few weeks endurance back to 390 FTP at 75 kg... that's some natural talent speaking :D
This is perfect insight thank you. Huge effort in editing too. Subscribed best of luck in your racing.

Great video mate, it was awesome to watch you progress. Top 10 next year knowing what you have learned this time around.

Should be 100k.
Lots of details and interesting ways to train. I think this is the 1st cycling video about an event that never said the exact result. I guess you were pleased with whatever the placement was, so way to go!
He got 21st. Finished up placing just behind Caleb Ewan and Chris Harper. Crazy good effort.
Unreal content, so much insight so thank you! Would love to see you race the Warrny in a few weeks while you are strong
I really loved this video👍 Is there anything you would have done differently if you could do it over again?
As a mere mortal who tries to dabble in racing this amazing. Congrats on the result.
You sir, are a master of your craft! Love your dedication… you animal! 🤪🙌
Awesome stuff, thanks for putting together and sharing! Would love to see how to set up a similar optimal training plan but for those of us that can maximum set aside 10 hours of training per week.
just get a trainerroad plan or something, good deal of apps out there offering exactly this.
Fantastic job Jesse, thanks for the video and all the info. shared. Chapeau mate.
Really liked this video, Jesse. Super useful insight into your training system.
FANTASTIC video
Thank you so much
So much in-depth information.
Really appreciate this
I am a triathlete.
Proper good nerdy video for those into the data like myself 👌
Impressive result at road nats but did you get the local legend around CP 😅
How are you only taking 2 days off the bike when sick? I find I have to take 4-5 days at least to get better, otherwise it just hits me so much harder. Or am I maybe over-reacting and can do low-Z2 when still having a few symptoms?
Great video, can see all the effort put into it and great ride as well
This was awesome, thanks for the deep dive into your training.
great video mate shows what it takes to be up the top of the sport even at domestic level
Amazing Insight. Great work and well Done Jesse.
Great video! One question: I have not seen any testing sessions. How do you estimate your FTP?
Now this is a quality video, thanks Jesse!
So much great information in this video. Very interesting.
Thank you for showing your training experience and advices. I will try to do the same😉
Congratulations to your wife and you !
Really cool video and insight. Incredible work!
Any advice?
Very insightful. Enjoyed watching that. One question - what are the ‘SE’ sessions you reference. Thanks
Low cadence (strength endurance)
Nobody can tell me Pantani, Armstrong and Ulrich trained on this deep level of science & structure back 25 years ago which makes Vingegaards and Pogacars fitness a lot more convincing, giving the fact that you’re absolutely crushing it yet aren’t even close to their abilities. This is nuts
Top video. Really enjoyed it and very informative.
I reckon you should get a track bike and give state individual pursuit a go.
Well done Jesse. Great dedication.
good stuff man, you deserve more subs
Great vid! Thanks for making.
How about cramp? Did you experience any during the Nationals? Do you you proactively take anything to prevent it?
Didn't get any cramps. There's not much you can take to prevent cramps, adequate fuelling and all the training on the conditioning side of things helped reduce the chance of cramping.
Love these vids, great insight
The big question I reckon on everyone's lips
How many times a week did you have to charge the OG bolt?
the craziest part of the whole thing is that you are doing base training in October, Australia truly is upside down. Cheers from Canada.
Awesome video Jesse! Curious to what is that large red/orange hub on your front wheel at 18min mark in the video?
It’s an airhub, adds resistance to make it easier to hold power
Hey Jesse, love the videos, tons of useful info. Random question: Do you ever schedule two training sessions in one day? If I did an interval session really early AM, what type of workout would you pair it with late in the afternoon if anything at all?
I don't often schedule double days. Most of us have enough going on in life to try and get a ride in 5, 6 days a week, let alone stacking double days in there too. I don't know many riders who require double days to get adequate training loads
Some riders use commutes by bike as training, so that may be a useful. But that's more because it makes sense logistically, it's not something I'd encourage anyone to do just for the sake of it
What power meter do you use?
Stages dual😱
Great thanks😁im stoked. When do i get my 500 deposit back?
Supplement with zinc in addition to iron and B12. Zinc, iron and B12 are the holy trinity of haemoglobim production
Awesome analysis mate and you killed it with you training and nat race💪🏼 with your efforts on bobbo did you do them seated or out of the saddle?
Great video, very informative and it's super interesting to see your approach! I'm at 81 kg at the moment as well and your vid has motivated me to try harder to shed the extra 7 kg!
Just one question regarding your initial 10 week build. You mention one sweet spot session a week but looking at the average power you were doing each week, it looks to me more like a threshold session (coggan zone 4)?
Thanks, yeh it was pretty much a threshold session, sweet spot technically is in the threshold coggan zone (4). Lower zone 4.
awesome video. Gives us all some proper insights, thanks for sharing
Congrats on the wedding, Jesse. I don't know how you managed to squeeze in a wedding. A couple of questions. You averaged 17 hours or so per week. If I can only do 6 hours per week, should I do more sweet spot? I too had a long layoff. My CTL is zero right now. When you say endurance, do you mean zone 2 rides (55% - 75% of FTP)?
great video and analysis, learned a lot !!!
Super interesting. Thanks for putting it out there.
