- In episode 30 of Project Binky we take a look at the power under the bonnet: the engine. It needs a cambelt, and oil change and nothing else... Honestly...

At 5:10 when Al spits his coffee funniest thing I have seen on RUclips
Brad Joyce I don’t think Nik allows any coffee on his show🤣
I almost did a similar thing as Al when I saw that...
Pissed myself for a solid 5 minutes. Now I need a shower. 🤣
I was half expecting the next statement after the coffee spit to be: "now we've made that decision, we're not going to use the 3S, but install a high-revving, more modern from a Lotus. ie 2ZZ-GE"
Howling!🤣🤣
Turbo Yoda
The man
The myth

Day 4609 of the government covid 19 lockdown. Project Binky is now on permanent play in my den of safety. I have drunk enough tea to float an ocean liner, the 2 female survivors who live with me are wondering why I'm standing by the microwave and shouting "make the noise". Brackets are now becoming a way of life. I must go, episode 1 is calling me again.
😂😂😂
After that cutaway to Al, I was expecting him to show up halfway through the episode by busting down the door with turbo in hand
Yeldawg i actually would’nt be surprised if Yoda sent them the turbo himself......
I was waiting for that too lol
*Angelic choir* IT'S THE TURBO YOOODAAA!

@@Glenncrx A perfectly missed opportunity. xD
The last time i saw yoda that mad, someone said: will this fit my honda?
Gives Moog "The Look". :-p
Or when he gave Marty “The Look” when they were putting the Big Block in 2Sexy and Marty said the blasphemy that was that 2Sexy didn’t need a turbo because of the new big block engine.
What we didn't see in that clip was Woody trying to restrain him from throwing a turbo in a suitcase and jumping on the first flight to the uk...
Or when someone said you fill a car's engine with oil till it comes out the filler cap.....
Don't you just feel joy when you find to of your favourite youtube channels collaborate even if just for a few seconds? So awesome!

I actually laughed out loud when I saw Turbo Yoda and then again at the end with Allen and Woody showing up holding and open manual and a cup of Tea (Lemon Squash I'm sure). I really wasn't expecting that one.
You're absolutely right 👍
But will the boys from Shropshire pop up in Qld with a lemon squash in hand??????

Love the ending boys! Love it!
Just needs a bracket, be fine!
Excellent tip about TDC and the fact that a piston will "hover" at TDC for a few degrees of crankshaft rotation; the assembler has to compensate for that. Understanding that relationship is the difference between being a true technician and a dealership 'parts installer'.
And Richard's explanation and the visual of how to do that is the best that I have ever seen or heard. He and Nik are what I would call 'critical thinkers'.
Seeing Turbo Yoda making a cameo and then doing the ending made my already perfect day (due to Project Binky coming out) into an exceptional day. Nice work as always guys and thank you for the entertaining and educational content as always

Garrett GT3582R Turbocharger
**This Turbo has been Superceded by GTX3582R.**
Full-Race is proud to release another industry first, the T4 Twin Scroll GT35R. Full-Race is proud to release another innovative high power turbocharger - the dual ball-bearing Twin Scroll T4 GT35R. Until now, the smallest single turbo available in twin scroll T4 configuration was either the T67/T04Z or the GT40R. After receiving input from many of our road race and drift competitors it was clear that while these turbos were capable of 700+whp, they simply did not offer enough response or a fast enough spool for a competitive race track vehicle. Using the highly efficient and high flowing twin scroll T4 turbine housing combined with the proven GT3582R turbocharger CHRA allows the turbo to spool sooner, make more low end, more midrange and significantly improve VE enough to gain top end power. This is the most responsive Garrett turbocharger for the 500-650whp range.
Turbine Specifications:
Turbine housing A/R: 1.06
Turbine inlet: T4
Turbine outlet: 3.0 in. Vband
Turbine wheel: GT35R
Compressor Specifications:
Compressor housing A/R: .70
Compressor Inlet: 4 in.
Compressor Outlet: 2.5 in.
Compressor Wheel: GT35R
About Twin Scroll:Twin scroll turbo system design addresses many of the shortcomings of single scroll turbo systems by separating those cylinders whose exhaust gas pulses interfere with each other. Similar in concept to pairing cylinders on race headers for N/A engines, twin scroll design pairs cylinders to one side of the turbine inlet so that the kinetic energy from the exhaust gases is recovered more efficiently by the turbine. For example, if a four-cylinder engine’s firing sequence is 1-3-4-2, cylinder 1 is ending its expansion stroke and opening its exhaust valves while cylinder 2 still has its exhaust valves open (while in its overlap period, where both the intake and exhaust valves are partially open at the same time). In a single scroll AKA undivided manifold, the exhaust gas pressure pulse from cylinder 1 is therefore going to interfere with cylinder 2’s ability to expel its exhaust gases, rather than delivering it undisturbed to the turbo’s turbine the way a twin scroll system allows.
The result of the superior scavenging effect from a twin scroll design is better pressure distribution in the exhaust ports and more efficient delivery of exhaust gas energy to the turbocharger’s turbine. This in turn allows greater valve overlap, resulting in an improved quality and quantity of the air charge entering each cylinder. In fact, with more valve overlap, the scavenging effect of the exhaust flow can literally draw more air in on the intake side while drawing out the last of the low-pressure exhaust gases, helping pack each cylinder with a denser and purer air charge. As we all know, a denser and purer air charge means stronger combustion and more power… but the benefits of twin scroll design don’t end there. With its greater volumetric efficiency and stronger scavenging effect, higher ignition delay can be used, which helps keep peak combustion temperature in the cylinders down. Since cooler cylinder temperatures and lower exhaust gas temperatures allows for a leaner air/fuel ratio, twin scroll turbo design has been shown to increase turbine efficiency by 7-8 percent (faster spool, quicker response) and result in fuel efficiency improvements as high as 5 percent. It is wise to size the turbine housing A/R larger than the single scroll turbine A/R typically used!
In other words it’s big
I spent the whole episode thinking “right, I’m heading to the comments section for this one! 5 years watching and waiting for the next episode for a 3sgTe mini build only to have the turbo removed. Noooooooooo!!!!”
Anyway, you got me
I was so ready to come complain big time about leaving the turbo, it made NO sense at all. So glad they where joking. The work done is brilliant!

Got me too. I was quite suspicious when they still fitted the spacer plate tho 😏
I was about to be so depressed until I saw that Garrett box 🤣
Glad you came to your senses for the safety of the build
Silently Sceptical you read the comments before watching the video?
Silently Sceptical I don’t tend to read them at all.
It’s hardly a stretch to think that there might be information about what happens in the video....in the comments about the video. Seems a bit odd to be saying people have spoiled it for you.
The Curb weight of a standard Mini is around 650kg. Take away all the heavy stuff like subframes, engine, gearbox etc it turns out as barely anything. And even after all the supportive and stiffening extra metal put in to Binky, the bare shell was liftable by Nik and Richard.
Now the curb weight of a gt four is around 1400 kg. Seen all the other parts of it I would assume the body itself is also rather structurally sound, making that quite heavy too.
Where I'm going with this is how much Binky will way in the end. Well essentially the whole project is fitting the gt four into the Mini shell, which is smaller and lighter. We do however have to remember how much of the stuff put in is to replace something else, like the bulkhead, seats, fuel tank etc. However in the end the extra things will add some weight. Also what has to be pointed out is that most modern cars have even more features, like ABS, electric seats, a tv in the centre console etc. And they're in a bigger shell
All in all I reckon the final curb weight of Binky will be around 950kg-1200kg based on what I just wrote.

Yes, that is definitely a “small modern turbocharger” you got there 😂😂
At 3:18 Rich says "none of the internals will fit." Why not? Just because you enlarged the bore? Ha what wimps. I met my wife when we both worked in a small General Motors factory. It covered 340 acres (140 hectares for Rich). That factory employed 25,000 hourly workers, and produced 560,000 automobiles in a year. She worked in the engine building, and I worked in the next-door building (they shared a common fire wall. Her job was reaming the bolt holes in the large end of the connecting rods. They had to be accurate to 0.08mm or 80 microns. So, yes, a 500 microns gap in the cylinder bore is intolerable. BTW the bodies were made in another factory 3 km away, and all of the forged, cast or hammered, were built in still another factory. Altogether the three factories covered over 640 acres (a square, one mile on a side) [Rich that is 260 hectares].
I have learned so much from this series. Watching the engine get build was fascinating. Keep it up!
