  • Haas makes engraving text on your parts easy, using just a few lines of code. Mark shows just how easy it is in this Tip of the Day. Subscribe to our RUclips channel ( / haasautomation ) and visit www.haascnc.com for more operator tips and tricks!
    In this first video of our 3-part series on engraving, Mark looks at each variable on the G47 line of code, explaining how to position the engraved text on your part, and even how to engrave text along any angle.
    Don't miss Part 2 (bit.ly/CNC-Engraving_Part-2) and Part 3 (bit.ly/CNC-Engraving_Part-3) of our 3-part engraving series.

    Is there a way to make the text on center? Do I have to manually offset my starting point? Example If I were to make a compass and engrave an "N" at x0 y1.5, the center of the N would be on that point and not the bottom left corner.

    Hi Mark, I'm trying to make a flat engraving positioned at a specific position defined by a radius and an angle, those two values are defined by macro values, I tried to make the engraving using G68 but I haven't had any luck so far since the engraving goes somewhere else. could you please analyze this and tell me if there is any solution?
    Your videos are great I have watched almost all of them. Thank you!

    I think it'd be intensely valuable to do a whole piece on G187. For those who don't know, it can be difficult to explain. P1 for roughing, P2 for semi-finish (and the default) and P3 for finish operations. Any E value can go anywhere and is what holds the machine to the desired tolerance. In different P modes the servo acceleration values are different (and this can be found in the parameters if one digs deep enough) and can drastically reduce cycle time if one puts P1 E.025 in high speed machining toolpaths.

    Hi Mark I am trying to engrave a dimension that I measured with my renishaw probe. I normally would convert my measurement result to a string first and then pass it in a G47 text engraving, but it does not work. It would literally print the hashtag with the variable number. How can pass a string stored as a variable into the G47 text engraving

      Dharmesh Pattani - If I am just engraving a part number on one part or fixture, I often just use a Spot Drill (don’t tell anyone). For production parts, a small (1/8”, 3mm) die sinking endmill (runner cutter) with a .03” (,75mm) radius lasts really well. For cosmetic engraving (molds, golf putters), Single Lip Engraving cutters, with small “tip-offs” (flat at end) are often used. Tools with large radius on the tip, and blunt cutter angles, last longer. Pointy tools with sharper angles (like 15° included) tend to give better looking engraving, but the tools don’t last as long. Companies like Harvey Tool have a wide line of engraving cutters. Use lots of coolant on brass and aluminum. On steels, I’ll often just use a dab of tapping fluid on the part (no coolant). Run the highest RPM you can, and keep your feedrates low (.0005” Fz per tooth starting). - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day

Check out these two videos for more information, along with your Haas Manual. ruclips.net/video/AM6nVgKjBQo/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/YbbZJ7H0NUw/видео.html . - Mark, Haas Tip of the day

    • @haasautomation
      @haasautomation  5 лет назад +3

      Baldo - We can use a G101/G100 command to Mirror Image our Engraving, or any code really. Take a look at G101 in the Haas manual, which you can download from www.haascnc.com for more information. We will place a G101 X0. (Mirror On, about X-Axis X0) before our engraving, and place a G100 (Mirror Off) after our G47 engraving is done. Run things in Graphic Mode first to make sure it looks the way you’d like. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day

      We can engrave a diameter symbol, with a G47, by engraving a lower case “o”, and then engraving a forward slash “/” over it. Aside from this, we would need to use a CAM System. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day.

    Is engraving at that speed normal?... I engrave letters this size at feed rates of 5ipm and 3000 rpm and this takes up a considerable amount of time, can someone clarify from expierience, are little 2mm end mills able to handle feeds up to 40ipm? I mean it makes sense because it's less than a .01 depth of cut

    • @haasautomation
      @haasautomation  7 лет назад

      Yes, you can engrave as fast as the tool can handle while still achieving a desirable finish. 40-120 ipm is perfectly normal.

    • @wethenorth3695
      @wethenorth3695 7 лет назад

      in doing so you'd be sacrificing tool life would'nt you? if your engraving many parts this high speed will cause wear faster? or is it all the same because its the same material removal? thanks so much!

    • @haasautomation
      @haasautomation  7 лет назад

      Cole - Speeds and feeds are very tool, material, and depth-of-cut specific. I think that the best looking engraving is done with tipped-off single-lip engraving cutters, but you have to go slower with these, about .001” per revolution or less on steel. Engraving cutters with radius on them (die sinking end mills) can feed faster and they last longer, but the engraving is rounded. Check out the Speeds and Feeds recommendations for these Harvey Tool cutters: www.harveytool.com/secure/Content/Documents/SF_25200.pdf. You can also see different engraving cutters on their site, www.harveytool.com/cat/Engraving-Cutters/Specialty-Profiles/Browse-Our-Products_195.aspx. I hope this helps get you started. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day.

    • @haasautomation

      Qusin111 - Sure, it’s pretty easy to mirror the engraved text. We’ll preface the engraving code with a G101 X (or Y), this turns on Mirroring. We turn off Mirroring when done with a G100. Check out G101 in your Haas Mill Manual. Thanks for the comment. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day

    • @haasautomation
      @haasautomation  7 лет назад +5

      Steve - I cheated! I knew where the perfect spot was, because I had the CAD drawing. Check out 01:12 in the video, we show that our engraving starts in the bottom left corner of that first letter, even if it is at an angle. If I had to do this manually, I would Handle Jog the engraving tool above the part and note the XY location in the current Work Offset, and use that as my starting XY. It would probably still need some manual adjustments. Thanks for the comment. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day
