Stretching Our Limits Traveling On A WHIM In Nova Scotia

- At it's core, this is what Van Life is really all about. Simply using your van, or in our case an almost van, to live life... and do all you can do, see all you can see... on a whim. In a world where everyone is in such a hurry, with so many appointments and destinations wrestling for their time and attention, wouldn't it be nice to be in a different country with none of that? No real destination in mind... no appointments or bookings... just time to explore what's in front of you. We found that sometimes when you travel on a whim what's in front of you is perhaps a great spot by the ocean, or it's a generous local taking time to invite you to a celebration of youth and their Celtic music. Or maybe it's 20-mile bike ride and your dog chasing sticks that are floating in the Bay of Fundy tide. Or it's a hike that's so strenuous it takes ropes and foot ladders to get you to the end. Or it could be making a wrong turn in the middle of nowhere and continuing on over a mountain in Nova Scotia just to see where it goes.
THAT IS WHAT IT'S LIKE TO TRAVEL ON A WHIM AND THIS WEEK WE SHOW YOU WHAT THAT'S LIKE FOR US AND WHETHER WE RECOMMEND IT. SPOILER ALERT... WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.

Good friend, RIP, had a place in Baddeck, which is a great place to visit. We went there in August a few years ago when they had the Celtic Colors festival. Irish music from some of the best musicians from Ireland.
Who needs a five star restaurant if you can travel a dirt road to a waterfall? I agree with Lynn, that waterfall was awesome! Wonderful to unexpectedly meet up with friends too. I love traveling on a whim.

It was a concert was so awesome and seeing the young people embrace their culture was a beautiful experience.
Baddeck was mentionned. As in many communities in the Maritimes, Baddeck hosts a lobster dinner. As an alternative to a lobster and unlimited mussels, they offer planked salmon. The fillets are secured to planks, which are leaned against supports around a wood fire.
When we drove the Cabot Trail, we did it anticlockwise. Were I to do it again, I would go clockwise round Cape Breton. Looking over the edge can be nerve racking...

its been a couple years since I've done the Baddeck Lobster Dinner, but it was amazing!!!! Loved the all you could eat mussels.

The people. The scenery. The food. So glad you are getting to visit one of my happy places. I did notice no litter or trash unlike many other places. I found most of those I met & got to know in NS were friendly & very proud of keeping their surroundings clean. Thanks again for sharing. BTW - y’all look & act a lot younger than being in your 60s.
I didn’t think of it until you mention it, I don’t think we saw any littler either. We never had to clean up a campsite which is unusual. That is really amazing now that I’m thinking back. Thanks for bringing that to our attention.

It seems to happen a lot when you are traveling in the same area the same way. We love it when it happens.
That was so cute Maggie looking for her stick when you went for a walk by the water. That was a cute parade you saw and went by you. What was the name of the town that had the parade? That was cute they do that yearly. The scenery is beautiful there. Mabou Beach is beautiful. I love beaches. I love that joke Owen told in front of and back of. I love when he tells jokes.

We had the same experience and learned ABW! We ended up hiking too far in the Lake Louise area without water, sunscreen, bug spray, snack, hiking Garmin, etc.) Guess we are never too old to learn. Love watching your time in Canada. We are loving western Canada! We have one more week or so before crossing the border to the US. I’m already missing Canada and can’t wait to return. The one thing I will remember the next trip to Canada is: bring more Scott TP. 😅 Safe travels friends!

We do plan most of our activities around Maggie, if she can’t go for some reason we make sure she has some special time too. The crocks were not the right choice for that hike.

Cape Breton. There are few destinations that are finer. We love exploring there and though we've done it numerous times already, we are not finished. I hope you got to experience a good old Cape Breton Oat Cake while you were there. If not, hit me up - I'll give you the recipe.

We have had Maggie for nine years, the vet said she probably lived the first year of her life on her own. She is a sweetheart for sure.

We have a Team Obsidian: Bike Covers, we have it in our Amazon store. It’s held up really well so far, I rally like that it has snaps underneath and it cinches in to fit the bikes so it doesn’t blow around.
My family has watched your content for a long time. Change is good, Your content has morphed. Sometimes you are in paid camping areas, then boondocking, then state or federal parks. Just a thought, break them up in your videos. Do not make an entire series on boondocking, then a series on state parks, etc. How about instead, have a night of one each in the best rotation you can? Also, do not get hooked up on one contact type. Your Florida series was all about alligators, swamps and manatees, this series seems to be all about light houses. Maybe not, but just felt like that. Look, I am not a "jerk commentator" just want to be helpful so your content continues to thrive. The last you need is someone who kisses up to you with comments that they love everything and then down the road your influence fades. Love the dog, she adds content but you are the stars. Weigh that in for video time too.
Thank you for the very thoughtful and honest suggestions. We'll keep them in mind. Our problem is one that is hard to solve though. We vow to let the RUclips video tag along with us as we travel, no matter how we travel. We don't travel for the RUclips channel... does that make sense (I hope). It just turned out for this trip that we just never paid for a campground and there were a ton of lighthouses due to this being the Maritime provinces. Believe me though, we wrestle with what you're saying all the time. But although we love the channel and what it provides for us, we love traveling the way we travel more. We are super glad your family is part of our family for such a long time. Means a lot to us. Stay connected and always let us know what you think, OK?
