You and Lori are so generous to share your love of applique. Thank you for letting me be a part of it! This is an Amazing community with such giving people. Great tutorial Olivia 😀. I hope many others are encouraged to try this form of stitching 🧵
Thanks for another great tutorial. You make everything seem very approachable. For the long vines, I’ve seen Alex Anderson make them from a single cut and then strategically place a motif over the ends in the border. Viola, no seam!
Thank you so much for sharing your technique to do appliqué. You are so easy to listen to and I also really enjoyed showing your Blackbird Books and information!!
Thank you for this post; it was very helpful. I love your videos with the book flip-throughs. They are so nice, I'm sorry I have only found Blackbird Designs recently. I am in search of "In the Meadow" as I'd love to make that Songbird quilt (or at least a block or two)! I look forward to finding more of your videos!
Great tutorial! I love applique. When making my long vines i use my bias strip tools, press open the seams, and use Quilters Bias Pressing Bars to make my bias. Very easy to do. I like the metal ones better than the plastic. They are an inexpensive tool for your sewing studio.
Hi Olivia! I finally know what to do with my Apliquik tools following your video! (They’ve only been in my sewing room for several years. Yep…I love tools too.) I would probably make long stems in the same way you are…sewing them together first and then creating the stem shape… Thanks for the video. You are starting to make my quilty bug start to buzz again. It kinda went into hibernation when I took up cross stitch again…so THANK YOU! Lori
Aww, thanks Linda! I think I'm using a different voice on RUclips than I do in real life. I think I use it when I have to talk on the phone for work, too, lol.
Thank you so very much for this video! I have theApliquick tools and have been struggling a bit. It’s nice to be able to watch someone else using them! This is my first time watching you and I’m looking forward to catching up with your other videos. Thank you🌸🌸
Thanks so much, Char! Let me know if you need any additional help with the tools! There's a few good Apliquick tutorials out there that might help as well.
Great tutorial Olivia! I have not tried this method yet but will definitely do that. I think the tools would make the turning so much easier... especially around the wavy little tail. I chose this same pattern to try my first applique, and I did the same thing with making the leaves all one piece. I like that you mention slow stitching...it is for sure... but I think your right, that it gives a lovely result. As for the bias... I have made a ton of it for costumes. I always sew the pieces together on the bias too, and press them so that the fabric is laying toward the pointy side of the tape maker so it doesn't get as bunched up. I hope that makes sense? Looking forward to more instructions from you and Lori!
Thank you! I'm new to this type of applique and really appreciate you and Lori sharing your different styles! I just received my Blackbird "The Raven" quilt book and look forward to the challenge! 🥰
Hi Olivia! Thank you for showing the apliquick method! I’ve tried freezer paper and backbasting appliqué and the apliquick looks super smooth!!! I just pulled out the BBD Halloween 1904 booklet!!
Excellent video!! I had bought those appliqué tools when you mentioned them, or I think it was you, several months ago. After watching your video I'm now anxious to try them.
This was very informative. Thanks for doing the video. I have done some needle turn appliqué and didn’t enjoy it. I have planned to prepare the pieces before stitching down if I ever try again.
I have just come across blackbird designs via Pinterest for the first time. They are exceptional and I would over to purchase some but I am in new Zealand and the cost via Amazon is unaffordable for me. Are they still being published and available, any suggestions about sourcing them. Thankyou
Great video! Thank you for the great details. I too would like to know how to make very long bias stems. I hope you will share the answer when you find out.
Great tutorial. Thank you for showing this. I am trying a freezer paper method, however I am finding it a challenge to remove the paper. In this technique does the Apliquick paper stay in during the appliqué sewing process? ~Anitra
Hi, Olivia! I love your videos! You give me confidence that I can make an appliqué quilt and I am beginning with a BBD one. I have a really silly question, but need to ask…if I want my quilt to have the same look and feel as the fabrics in the BBD book, what type of fabric lines am I looking for? Is this style “reproduction” prints? Are they regular floral? Or are these “civil war”? I don’t understand the genres of patterns and I need help finding designers who replicate the look and feel of a BBD quilt. The reason I’m kind of stuck is because the quilt stores around me all went out of business during Covid, so I will have to do a lot of acquiring online. Thank you for any help you can offer in this regard!
Thanks Jaime!! That's a great question about the fabrics! If you go to Lori's channel (Texstylust Textile Style), to her Flosstube #16, go to about one hour and two minutes in and she talks about this exact thing. She shows a few available fabric lines that she thinks are similar. The ones she shows are from Minick and Simpson, Laundry Basket Quilts, and French General. I think some of the fabrics from 3 Sisters look like Blackbird as well. As far as style goes, I think "Traditional" might be the best label fit, but I admit I have a lot to learn when it comes to fabric. And just in case you haven't heard yet, Blackbird Designs is coming out with a new fabric line!!! I think it'll be available for us to purchase in February. I'm so sorry to hear about your local quilt shops! I have quilt shops near me, but they don't carry a lot of civil war reproduction or traditional style fabrics. I still love to go, though!
@@OliviaBFlosstube thank you so much for all of this information! I’ll be watching Lori’s video tonight. I’m going to save up just for fabric purchases now because i really feel that i have to really love the fabric to be happy with the final result. I already bought the Apliquick set at your recommendation and have been practicing. I love it!
If I did the two parts, one half would slightly overlap the other piece. Where the overlap occurs, I wouldn't turn under the seam on the bottom piece, to reduce bulk. I hope that makes sense! I'll touch on this briefly in my next video since the bird wing overlaps the bird's body.
Fabulous video. You explained things really well! I love the fabric you chose for the block and am anxiously awaiting the finished project. I’ve used another method to do long bias strips; but I’m not sure I can explain it well in writing. Message me when you have some time, and then we can FaceTime so I can show you.

Wow!! How peaceful and beautiful work 😍
Thank you for taking the time to show your method! It seems easier but it may be that you have practiced this method. I’ll give it a try.
I hope you like it!
Thank you SO much for taking the time to show how you do this. You explained it so well. This is on my short list.
Awesome! And my pleasure!

Thanks Katherine! And thank you for the pointer! Applique moves slow, but boy is it impressive looking! ; )
Great tutorial! The bias tape section was so helpful! I am new at appliqué so this is awesome! Thank you for sharing !! ❤️

This was very informative. Thanks for doing the video. I have done some needle turn appliqué and didn’t enjoy it. I have planned to prepare the pieces before stitching down if I ever try again.
Thanks Vicki! I hope you like it better that way!
Thank you for taking the time to explain this process. Do you leave the papers in or can they be removed when sewing the pieces in place?
You're very welcome! The paper stays in. It adheres to the fabric, so it would be very difficult to remove. It's very much like an interfacing.
I have just come across blackbird designs via Pinterest for the first time. They are exceptional and I would over to purchase some but I am in new Zealand and the cost via Amazon is unaffordable for me. Are they still being published and available, any suggestions about sourcing them. Thankyou

Thanks Linda! And will do!
Great tutorial, thanks so much for sharing with us! Do you leave the paper in when applying the piece to the main piece?
Thanks Ronnie! Yes, the paper is adhered to the fabric like an interfacing and will now stay in permanently.
