How incredible are the RAT models...been around this long and still manage to hold their own in both function and price point. Just an awesome knife for just about anyone
@@billbush1270 sorry I haven’t tried any upgraded scales for the RAT 1/2, in my opinion, the reason the RAT is so good is because of the quality you get in the $35-45 price point. If you spend money on upgrade scales for it, you’re pushing the total cost up into a higher category with better (and US produced) knives

Thank you for the Kershaw camp 9 recommendation on your camp video! Just got one and it is perfect for forging new trails in the woods and chopping up some firewood! Keep up the great work Mr. Andersen
RAT Model 1 is my favorite pocket knife. It's big enough, and yet, isn't too heavy in pocket. The handle and liner are heavy duty. One-handed opening is very good. I'd like to have a close look at the BK40. I do like: BK9, BK7, BK16.
The ZT0566 is also another fantastic option for the Hinderer substitute question. If assisted action is a no-go, you can remove the spring bar from that particular model and it'll still function fine, though I've heard the detent can be a little light on some. Also, I really really wish Spyderco would make a 'lightweight' version of the Spydiechef. I would not be upset about FRN handles and a price point closer to something like the Pacific Salt, Para 3 lightweight, Sage 5 lightweight, etc.

Hey DCA - enjoying your content. I have an Avispa in D2, and love the satisfying thumb stud flick opening. I’m looking for something with similar action, better steel, and preference for liner lock. No flipper and no axis lock variants. Use is EDC and fidgeting during virtual meetings. Prefer non-tactical. My hands are solid at XL. Price range up to around 150. Hey there and greetings from Germany. I really enjoy watching your videos and learned a lot about knives, so thank you for your work. What I want to know is this: I really like the Design of the CRKT Minimalist Cleaver, especially because you can carry it with a clip on your Belt. Do you know some alternatives, maybe slightly bigger with a sheet you can put on your Belt horizontal?
Some Chinese knife manufacturers like Kubey buy high quality steel etc from the USA, Germany and Japan plus some US knife reviewers who actually work in metal shops have tested them for content and hardness. So far all I've heard is the steels are better that what was expected. Chinese have been making knives for thousands of years. Combined with state-of-the-art CNC and top level machinest from half the world going to China to build stuff. I have a 30 year old Chinese kitchen butcher knife that I used daily. Still very sharp only been honed on the 12'' steel bought the same day, never once been on a sharpening stone and original grind still barely visible. I bought it where Chinese people buy their knives and it says 'Made in China' in Chinese.
Thank you for all your fine vids. I love Damascus blades. I have a number, but I have a real problem with them retaining a sharp edge. I love a drop point and something aroun 3.5 inches is good. while I use my knives for about everything, I think the single biggest use is opening boxes. my current "best" knife is Cold Steel 58B American Lawman Folding Knife 3.5". So, is there something simular only with a very high quality Damascus blade? If it is possible, I would like a blade that holds an edge as well as the 58B. right or wrong, I sharpen my knives at 20 degrees. thanks! Craig
DCA, I have a knife with M390 blade steel that has developed a few small spots of rust on it. (I honesty have no idea how). What is the best/proper way to remove the oxidation doing the least damage to the original finish? I really dig the content here, keep up the great work!
Hey, I only recently got into knives and now have half a dozen knives floating around. What do you recommend for storage that won't break the bank? Thanks and love the KnifAQs
No advice on anything except quantity; get one with way more storage than you think you'll need. Then get a second identical one and keep it in the basement for when you need it (probably by December) and so you can swap it out to keep your better half from seeing your whole stable at once and leaving you.
11:07 "The stuff we carry here, you can definitely rely on. I'll tell you this for sure, if we ever find out something we are carrying is not being honest with the materials we're going to have them booted out of this building in a heartbeat" Hoback?
Can you please do a size comparison for the Civivi Riffle and Brazen against other common folders. I am wanting to replace my shuffle 2 with a larger knife but I am not to sure if I want to make the jump to a 3.5in blade.
DCA please talk to uncle Ethan and convince him into the bk40 having s35vn with micarta and cross bar lock of course made in the USA, sounds like a B.A. knifecenter exclusive to me. TIA DCA your the man, I knew you could do it lol.
Hey DCA. What are your thoughts on D2 for a camping fixed blade. I’m looking at the QSP Bison but I’ve never had D2 on a fixed blade. Any thing else similar come to mind?
David! I have a question? If you had 220 to 250 dollars and wanted to add something new to your collection but not something small. A knife medium to large and not too heavy.
Hey DCA I have a question that I would like your opinion on. My cousin is looking for a replacement for his CRKT pazoda. He would like a small classy knife with similar dimensions to the pazoda that would be used for trimming branches and opening packages.
How does the Boker Frelon look in comparison to the RAT-1 and the Becker BK40? The shape is appealing, though it does not look too good for "slightly larger than average hands".
Hi DCA, edge retention aside, I was wondering about possible wear on the two metal shoulders of a frame lock mechanism getting in contact under high pressure repeatedly. Is there any known issue with wear on frame locks and consequent loosening or jamming of the mechanism. I have just purchased my first frame lock, and it works just fine. But I am a bit worried how it will perform over time, looking at those hard and sharp metal shoulders gliding over each other with no lubrication and a good amount of pressure. Any personal experiences?
Howzit DCA.two questions: 1) I am looking for new gloves whilst bushcrafting, camping and whittling. Can you recommend cut resistant gloves? I handle very sharp knives and I have had a few close calls even when being careful.2) leather vs kydex sheath. Oh and one critique. Its horrible to wait a week to watch a new FAQ episode. Its too great for one episode a week.
Have those magnacut deals gone through yet, or are they still in the works? I'm wanting to pick one up, but I want to wait till you have something special if that's on its way.
For the person who asked about knife steel and certain companies not being honest about what blade steel is actually being used there is a youtube channel that addresses this frequently. LUVTHEMKNIVES is the channel name and he sends a lot of knives off to be tested and reports the results
DCA, can you suggest an easy to open and close pocket knife for an 86yr old who can no longer open his old school slip joint? I just tried the Spyderco Roadie. He can open it but unfortunately, he can't close it. Thanks!
I have 2 questions. I like how spear point and stiletto looks, have been looking at the BD4 and Misericordia by Extrema Ratio. Are there any other recommendation similar for a fixed and a folder? Side question, Are there any japanese knife makers (non-kitchen knives) you can showcase?
Question: dear Mr Anderson, what are your Top 3 memorable movies where you found/saw proper usage of knifes (either Hunter, Bushcraft, or EDC) when you though "yes, that's a damn good knife'', and the actor and/or the scene demanded somewhat "realistic" usage ... If not 3, then 2 or at least one movie scene...
Great vid, dca! I'm looking for a knife like a TRC Apocalypse Virus edition. At around 450 bucks it is slightly on the pricier end of the spectrum. Do you have an alternative in terms of construction materials and blade finish? It also can be smaller than the TRC. Thanks and greetings from Germany!
DCA, I want to replace my entry level kitchen knives with knives of better quality. I’m interested in building my own set with individual knives. I’m not particularly concerned about price, but I am looking for best value for a good quality user set of knives without getting too fancy. Could you make a few recommendations?
That's the only ZT I really like (for everything, plenty I like just for looks). How to avoid cheap knockoff knives (crap steel), DON'T BUY OFF OF AMAZON. "Pretty much no" does not equal no. it PROBABLY wont, but if it does....I have no desire to sing soprano. IMHO both the Cutjack and that BK are really nice knives for the bux. That said, Rat still beats them 1. at price point. 2. the Rat II is a nice smaller EDC choice, and 3, for some reason on that knife they just did something RIGHT. I read a lot of reviews, and I'm always surprised to see people recommend that old liner lock, but a common comment is....don't waste your money, get a RAT instead. And for what you ACTUALLY do with a pocket knife, it's a really solid design with a great reputation at a price affordable for everyone. I'd say if you're going to pick one to compete with it, you have to at least mention the Kbar Dozer--better lock, good components, works great, perfectly functional, EDC-sized, and you can get D2 if you go up to $30 or so. I'd also mention some Cold Steel options like the mini Recon1. I'm such a big fan of the Dozer that the BK intrigues me, but...I THINK the Dozer is made in Taiwan where that BK is made in China...doesn't necessarily mean anything, but given the choice, in my experience, go with the one made in Taiwan.
Hey DCA, can you recommend a traditional/modern traditional lockback with a sub 3 inch, bowie style clip point blade. Does not need a pocket clip but if it does have one it must be left hand friendly. Finally prefer American made but not a requirement as quality is more important than geography. Thanks. You can edit this part out but I tried a Buck 55 Legacy and that had so many issues that I'm afraid to try any other Buck models.
Late, but what about Civivi rustic gent? I know it was discontinued very recently, but maybe you can find it one from somewhere. No pocket clip on the knife, but it's on the leather pocket slip that's included.
I'm in endless online meetings for work these days. I love working from home! What is a good knife to play with during endless Zoom and Teams meetings? Fixed or folder, doesn't matter. Insane sharpness with a Spyderco Sharpmaker and mediocre skills would be a plus. I'm partial to fixed blades. But playing with folders is definitely entertaining in a mindless way that doesn't detract me from work.
DCA, I am looking for a fixed blade but I need it to be office work friendly. Any suugestions would be great money around 250. I prefer Made in 🇺🇸 blades any suggestion would be great.
Hey DCA, I have challenge for you. I love the Spyderco Shaman, but it's out of my budget. Do you know of any Shaman-like knives for about half the price?
Why wouldn't you want to say the phrase, "Now that's a knife" on camera?? That was the iconic movie line from the 80's like "Hasta La Vista, Baby" was from the 90's in Terminator 2. Crocodile Dundee is a classic, and got so many to love knives, bowie style and all.
I have a question, i cook in a kitchen and am looking for a fixed blade that i can have on my belt, nothing too long, something like a paring knife, something i can just take out, and back in and washes withought a problem, something under $90

Still very sharp only been honed on the 12'' steel bought the same day, never once been on a sharpening stone and original grind still barely visible. I bought it where Chinese people buy their knives and it says 'Made in China' in Chinese.
Ohhh, the titanium. Get a Rike M3. Kubey Drake titanium framelock in S90V is running about $150 right now! Demon right there
Thank you for all your fine vids.
You could try a rust eraser block from Knife Center or even Flitz polish.
@@raylaylin4229 I was concerned one of those blocks would look like I took sandpaper to the blade. They don’t do any damage?
Do you guys carry a neck knife sheath for that Espada XL?
CPM D2 Kubey fixed blade is a beast
David! I have a question? If you had 220 to 250 dollars and wanted to add something new to your collection but not something small. A knife medium to large and not too heavy.
I really enjoyed this one. Thanx!
Hey DCA I have a question that I would like your opinion on. My cousin is looking for a replacement for his CRKT pazoda. He would like a small classy knife with similar dimensions to the pazoda that would be used for trimming branches and opening packages.
You could try looking at the Buck Spitfire or Mini Spitfire. The Esee Zancudo features a frame lock like that CRKT.
How does the Boker Frelon look in comparison to the RAT-1 and the Becker BK40? The shape is appealing, though it does not look too good for "slightly larger than average hands".
Hi DCA,
edge retention aside, I was wondering about possible wear on the two metal shoulders of a frame lock mechanism getting in contact under high pressure repeatedly.
That was a goog "now, that's a knoife" moment.
Check out the Project Farm gloves test video, that may help
@@jn651 thanks bud. Will do.
As for the sheath, if they're both quality, it boils down to your stance on veganism vs use of plastics lol
Have those magnacut deals gone through yet, or are they still in the works? I'm wanting to pick one up, but I want to wait till you have something special if that's on its way.
If the Bk40 ever Comes in d2 I'm all over it for multiple they be great gift knives or just beaters
So I recently bought a svord peasant from knife center I was wondering what steel is use on the blade
15N20 these days. I think they used L6 in the past. Basic high carbon steels. Very tough. Ok edge retention.
My wife just gave birth to my baby boy! What would you recommend as a "hand-me-down" camp/bushcraft knife for me to start a tradition with?
Definitely the Nordsmith Canteen.
Crocodile Dundee had a folder in the third film!
I want all my new steels in a para 3, so I'm down for a knife center orange magnacut para3
Opinel has some mirror finished folders.
DCA, I want to replace my entry level kitchen knives with knives of better quality. I’m interested in building my own set with individual knives. I’m not particularly concerned about price, but I am looking for best value for a good quality user set of knives without getting too fancy. Could you make a few recommendations?
Hey, DCA. What are some pocket knives and fixed blades that would last a lifetime?(preferably under 100 dollars)
What pocket knife would Rambo carry? No oversized cold steel haha
I really hope we see the Kabar BK-40
Hey DCA! love your vids. Wondering what handsome EDC titanium frame lock flippers there are
Kizer Sheepdog titanium s35vn
DCA,
I am looking for a fixed blade but I need it to be office work friendly. Any suugestions would be great money around 250. I prefer Made in 🇺🇸 blades any suggestion would be great.
David howcome Obsidian is not used in any folders or straight knives?
Hey DCA, I have challenge for you. I love the Spyderco Shaman, but it's out of my budget. Do you know of any Shaman-like knives for about half the price?
Why wouldn't you want to say the phrase, "Now that's a knife" on camera?? That was the iconic movie line from the 80's like "Hasta La Vista, Baby" was from the 90's in Terminator 2. Crocodile Dundee is a classic, and got so many to love knives, bowie style and all.
I have a question, i cook in a kitchen and am looking for a fixed blade that i can have on my belt, nothing too long, something like a paring knife, something i can just take out, and back in and washes withought a problem, something under $90
I would go with the Spyderco Bow River
David I bought a Hogue about 2 yrs ago. The knife is not a clone it is from the Xtreme Hogue series and is impossible to sharpen could it be because it has not point?
Magnacut!!! Can't wait
Can you recommend a Bradford guardian style sheath to fit a Ontario/esee 3?
