Stop unwanted pregnancies by getting your male dog a vasectomy and your female dog a partial spay. A partial spay involves removing the uterus, but not the ovaries. The surgery is much safer, because the main arteries are located after the ovaries. While your dog still comes into heat every six months (or so), she doesn't give off much of a scent to attract males because the scent is produced in the uterus. Also, she doesn't bleed during heat without a uterus. It is the best of all options. I don't want a eunuch for a dog - I want a male or female dog. And that is what I get.
Partial spay female dogs still bleed after surgery, because the ovaries cause uterine body bleeding from the uterine artery during the heat cycle. Also, partial spays can get stump pyonetra. The more you know.
@@DanTheVeterinarian Thank you for the response. I have had two dogs undergo partial spay surgery. Both bled a few drops during heat for about two years, and then stopped. The bleeding was nothing like it is with a uterus. I actually liked having a few drops to let me know that my dogs were in heat. As for the risk of pyometra, that seems much less likely without a uterus. Is there any evidence of partially spayed dogs having a significant risk of pyometra? The partial spay reduces the chances (according to my wife's gynecologist) of depression, obesity, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and a long list of other ailments. Nature gives animals a proper balance of hormones for good reason. Overall, messing with nature's will is not good for the animal (human or dog).
What about secondary issues such as atypical Cushings? Is this also related to timing, or is it due to hormonal changes no matter when the procedure is done? Thank you!!
I have four chiwawas and two are female one is already spayed but my other one is only three months that is why I spay them cause the two girls live with their two brothers
Hey Doc! Like you said there’s pros and cons as far as timing. I highly encourage ppl to do their own research before deciding on when it’s the right time. That being said I recommend waiting as they need their hormones to grow properly and healthy. Depending on the breed size their growth plates don’t closed until 18-22 months in large/giant. Another hard question to ask yourself is are you a very responsible owner. It only takes a few seconds for dogs to breed and tie so if you won’t keep your dog on leash through her cycle and never let her loose even in your fenced yard then fix her.
The growth factor is ONLY accurate for male dogs. Female dogs do not need their hormones to grow. Male dogs “need” longer because testosterone effects their bone and muscle growth
My dog was spayed this morning She's 3 has had heat cycles every 6 months or so Always acted like a false pregnancy, milk gland swelling and leaking milk Usually went back down but not entirely Last heat milk glands got very large and never went down My vet called me after the surgery and told me she had no cists on her ovaries But they were abnormal in size Could you explain to me what exactly this means? Thank you very much doctor

Doctor, hello. Please tell me if you have a video on your channel about what to do with the fear of dogs on the street? Many owners walk with their large pets without a muzzle and a leash. After the incident with the bite, psychologically you expect it from every dog you meet. What should I do?
Hey Doc! My dog, shar pei, male is 5 years and has mated just once ( 2 years ago), should I spay him or not? Which is best for him to have a longer life?
We had a Setter that died from pyo a few months ago. Never really knew much about it. Nasty business. So now we have our 11 year old Maltese mix booked to be spayed in 2 weeks time. Vet says her age isn't a problem and that it's best she's done. He's going to clean her teeth while she's still under. I'm sick with worry though. She's never had a health problem up till now. I'm worried she'll start to get things wrong with her after. What about incontinence?
Pretty funny. I rescued a dog from a shelter age of dog was 3 to 5 yrs old. They just got the dog fixed just before I picked the dog up. Seem you got to blame cancer on something. Instead of other things like pharmaceuticals and big food companies with all the by product put in the food. Just like people doctors. Not our fault your sick. Keep shifting the blame. All about the money
We have ours booked in for two weeks time. She's 11 1/2. We had one die of pyometra a few months ago do that's why we're doing it. I'm so worried though.
I think anyone who get's their pet that they say they love so much spayed or neutered don't actually love that pet but have it for their own selfish reasons. How can you say you love your pet and have a vet take it's reproductive organs out? What do you call a male or female dog or cat that had it done? They become genderless because you took out what actually makes them male or female. What if a higher form of life did this to humans? Animals have feelings too and just as humans love the feelings that you get when having sex, animals do too. I actually thought when your animal get's spay or neutered they just tie tubes but I recently got a rescue dog from a shelter and they neutered him before the adoption took place so I didn't have a choice in the matter. When I looked at his genital area to see how he was healing and saw that he no longer had testicles, I thought it was the most appalling, inhumane thing I have ever seen in my life. I would never chose to have my pet spayed or neutered cause I don't want to take that away from the pet I love not to mention it shouldn't be an option. Some people might argue that it controls their population well what if someone controlled human population?
@@joeray5394 So in other words you're saying it's nothing wrong with getting a vet to perform a procedure to cut out your dog or cats reproductive track. You can't possibly love your pet doing something like that. Just because society says it's to help control the pet population doesn't make it right. Another reason why pet owners do this is so they don't have to worry about their animal going in heat which is selfish, cruel and inhumane. I wouldn't do anything to my dog that I wouldn't do to myself.
@@chriswells2953 No, actually what I'm saying is people like who humanize ANIMALS are strange imo. The dog has zero cognition that it's reproductive organs are gone or in tact. It acts in instincts and learned behavior. You know, some find it cruel to not let their dogs sleep in their beds or eat off their own dinner plates too. What do you say about them?
@@joeray5394 I don't really think that's cruel, that's just a preference. I do let my dog sleep in my bed with me but wouldn't let him eat off of my dinner plate but then again I would let a human eat off of my dinner plate either.
@@joeray5394 In regards to humanizing animals I think that is weird but what I do know is God created animals just like he created us. They also have feelings like we do and with that said we have no right to alter their bodies for whatever reason just like we wouldn't want to be place in the position where someone took the liberty of doing that to us.

Great question! Lack of hormones or hormone changes can be a problem anytime. The most common post surgery hormone issue is urinary incontinence.
