Finally a vet with common sense that has not jumped on the ASPCA and PETA bandwagon that everyone needs to spay and neuter their pet as a puppy. There are tons of health issues related to early spay/neuter. I am so happy to see a vet stand up and tell the truth for once.
Hey I know you mentioned that you never neutered any of your male dogs. Being honest did you experience any aggressive behaviour with your dogs? I have a jack Russell terrier and my vet says I should neuter my dog and I have no idea what to do... My main concern is aggressive behaviour because right now he's a friendly dog and I don't want that to change.
***** An aggressive male dog is going to be aggressive whether or not you neuter him. Neutering also does not stop aggression. It can help with some behaviors such as mounting females and such. But it is a misconception that getting your dog neutered is going to fix behavioral issues. I have never had an aggressive dog.

Finally, we need more vets out there that say the truth about spaying and neutering your dog!! This is exactly how my vet feels on the subject. I have raised 13 pitbulls my whole life and never neutered any of them and never had a problem, all of them lived to be better 15-17

the humane Society tried to talk me into fixing my dog @ 3 months... I knew nothing about it but I know growing up without balls has to be bad so I didn't do it and I don't regret it...my dog is the best I feel luck to have him .. he's a 3 years old American bull dog..

I love this vet!! He makes common sense!! 12 years ago I had a sharpei that I neuter when he was 10 months old and he grew up with a lot of problems..I figured out that was because I neuter him to early..now I have a 2 in a half American bulldog that is not neuter and he's very healthy he doesn't even hamp ...he's very happy

I neutered my two bulldogs because it was advised by my vet they both got done at 6months and one of them has had Athritis since she was 3 years old, my other dog needed knee surgery at 5 years old , I wish I had never got them neutered so early makes me feel like I have caused the problems they have now

I agree, we had a Great Dane and the Vet recommended we neuter him at 6 months. He had joint troubles his entire life.
The Norwegian Animal Welfare Act makes it clear that surgical procedures are not to be used to adapt animals to the needs of humans, unless strictly necessary.
“It’s not the dog’s need, given there are no medical considerations,” says Torunn Knævelsrud, head of Section for Animal Welfare and Fish Health at the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (NFSA).
According to the NFSA it’s essential for vets to make decisions regarding the necessity of a neutering or spaying on a case-by-case basis.
“Neutering can never be a substitute for proper training of a dog,” says Knævelsrud.

Good training and responsible ownership > fixed dog. My neutered dog was just as aggressive as he was before being neutered.
Excellent answer... I don't like the vets who do this procedure without providing the real background. Your own pets should be given a few years and then you can decide.. Additionally if you cant keep track of your dog then you need to be more involved in their life or learn how to keep them under control.

neutering my middle aged Pomeranian was the worst decision in my life. He was happy and always smiled and often slept on his back. Now he doesn't smile anymore or wants to go for walks.

I do have her checked for pyrometria yearly .
Though my vet said pyrometria is rare.
Thank you! I adopted a rescue puppy, and they wanted to neuter him at 4 months old. I absolutely refused and backed up my decision with the advice of my Holistic Veterinarian. I have to eventually neuter him due to a contract I signed.
I had my old dog neutered at age 9 due to enlarged prostate at the vets request. He was having surgery to remove bladder crystals so they did it at the same time. He later developed cushings disease and cancer and I am wondering if this was due to me neutering him and the hormonal imbalances in his body. I will never know. He could have had the cushings before and I just didnt notice. I know that bladder crystals are common in cushings dogs so he could of already had it at the time of surgery. He died age 13 (pts) due to the cancer and fluid on the lungs. I really did try my best to keep him healthy. Miss you Tiger Miger
Thankyou I am having a problem with my gsd and my dog was done at 11months! He has suffered issues with muscle injuries at the age of 2😢! I will not be doing this again if i ever do have another one!

Hi! I have a 15 year old. He has developed bladder cancer nad has enlarged prostate. He has difficulty urinating and defacating. Would it be safe to neuter him at this age. PLEASE HELP.
I’m so glad I saw this, I’m about to get my dog neutered but he’s 2 1/2. Half Cane Corso, Half Pitbull (I didn’t know it was a thing, rescued him) but I was nervous I waited too long.
My husky neutered at 10 mths lived till 15 my poms lived to 15 girl and boy neutered at 3yrs old she had pups no illnesses at all long lives never saw a vet only when fixed and had to put pom boy to sleep old age

15 years isn't long for a husky. Huskies should live 20-25 years old. And I bet your 15 year old husky had health problems/low quality of life.

Are mixed breeds usually healthier than purebreds? Even when fixed later in life? I had some mixed dogs and they were fixed at six months. We would never fix as young as 3 months. The one dog that made it to age 11 developed some arthritis issues for a couple of years before she died. She could be perfectly normal, and after exercising, she would be sore. Yes, we kept her active. She just got sore in her senior years. She died at 11 because of an accident. We had no idea tho of what her breeding was. Orphaned puppy.
Mixed breeds mostly do live longer and healthier lives.
I just got my male neutered today he's still at the vet and I'm so afraid after watching all these videos 😢 i should have researched it first hand but everyone suggested it because he keeps marking in the house when i am away and i Don't want to keep him in a cage all day while Im working. Luckily, he's 7 years old so that makes me feel a little better. However he is Asthmatic and I'm concerned hopefully it won't matter and i hope he doesn't change emotionally he's the perfect dog ❤ when i met my husband i already had him and my husband is a neat freak 😂 he said baby you have to stop him from marking stuff 😮😢 if my dog dies or is not the same i will probably leave my husband for making me do this i swear 🤬

I never neutered my dogs neither did my grandfather. And his dogs never had problems and lived longer.
I had a female dog who was spayed at 5 years old, so later in her life purely to make sure she didn't get pregnant after having one litter (Planned). Anyway there were not complications, her personality didn't change, she was a little chubby but I have no doubt that was due to her always getting extra treats from people in town. Anyway she lived with little to no problems to the ripe old age of 18 years old. I understand those not wanting to get their dog spayed and neutered but don't start saying it's cruel. Yes there are pros and cons for both and there are alternatives, but think of it this way, if a female dog in particular goes through multiple pregnancies planned or unplanned as accidents happen then it can be bad on her health and her body. Also some male dogs can be very persistant.
It is cruel to spay or neuter a dog please explain how it's not.. Explain how ripping off a dog's balls for people's convenience is not cruel..

my dogs are really having a hard timr controlling themselves causing my female dogs getting pregnant the 3rd time! i dont want her experience another pregnancy only to be left with no puppies since we cant take care of all of them.

My parents neutered our German Shepard before he was probably even 1.
He started humping everything and I think that's why my parents did it.
Our last dog was basically the same though he was probably slightly older and he had to be put down because of a lot of cancers in his stomach and such at the age of 9!

So I neutered my dog and kept his Elizabeth collar on for 15 days. The incision looked like it healed perfectly but now a week after removing the collar the incision site is red and he keep licking it. Any ideas as to what’s happening?
He's licking it. - No really, that could be the cause of the redness. But it also could be an infection or a reaction to the stitches used. The fact though that it only got red once he could lick it though makes me think he's the one causing the redness.
Instead of neutering my dog, can he have a vasectomy? It just seems to me like, if that is how the animal comes, then wouldn't it be wise to keep the animal that way. I have heard there are pro's and con's to neutering, which makes it very confusing on what to do?

Tony Lopez some vets are experienced doing vasectomies on males and hysterectomy on females leaving the ovaries. Just have to find them.
It's to my knowledge vets here in the US are not trained to perform these types of surgeries. Veterinarians in the UK are

Got to neuter my 7yr old,as he's got a pereanal tumor caused by testosterone. Never had behaviour issues or aggression. A fit active healthy dog.

She should take care of it on her own. Mine does. For furniture, I cover it during that time. Ovary sparing surgery would eliminate the bleeding, yet provide her with the necessary hormones. I hope you waited until she was full grown (2 years).

I see, so then I need to contact my breeder and ask for full AKC rights just for my English Bulldogs well being, but that means I need to pay a balance of 1,500.🤔
His well being comes first, for sure.
That'll never happen with my dog's breeder. She only lets her show dogs go to other established breeders, and my dog's not considered a show dog. She'd have just rehomed my dog for breaking the pet dog spay/neuter contract.

What breed, maybe the procedure left him in severe pain, or he has an infection.
Dogs don't get "angry" when their testicles are removed, they will most likely forget they had them, and they probably didn't even know the purpose of them when they did have them.
It seems to me to be a surgical error or a medication error.
Neutering is important.
This "Dr." fails to mention sexual frustration and dominance factors.
When you don't neuter your dog you will have an incredibly hard time training them because they are distracted.
Put it this way, I've worked with dogs for 6 years professionally now, and i have never seen an un-touched dog that was better trained than the average dog.
@@Wataheadable my dog is untouched and better trained than all the touched dogs. hes the only one at the dog park that doesnt hump. perfect heel. perfect commands followed and recall. even when a female in heat is around he obeys. just whines. If you know how to train a dog their balls or uterus shouldn't change your ability.

Please respond.. I got a German shepard puppy from he humane society (pure bred) that's nutered and I'm losing sleep knowing they nutered him. These dogs get hip dysplasia as it is and scientifically having no balls is SO BAD for you wtf.. I'm just really heart broken that my dog will have these issues.. I feed him the best of foods and give him hip and joint treats but glucosamine but after watching this I'm heart broken.. I'm going to have to purchase hip and joint supplements right away.. this makes me sick.
A neighbour's German Shepherd that wasn't neutered was put down at 6 years old due to hip problems. It seems every health problem is being attributed to being spayed or neutered when that is not the problem. German Shepherd's were inbred to have a trademark stance that leads to hip problems. If you want a pet that has a long, healthy life, don't get one that has been inbred.
I talked to a local clinic today the vet said at 6 months majority of dogs development was done. So there's no harm to neuter at 6 months old. But I'm skeptical. Can anyone confirm before I neuter my dog? I just wanted to prevent accident with other females dog.

If the (OFA certification) tests can’t be done until a dog is two years old (fully grown), then there is harm in neutering a 6 month old.

My Story, I picked up and re homed a 9 month old BC from a young family who claimed they didn't have time to walk him.
I wanted a playmate for my 3 yo Lab x bitch, they get on really well together, always playing .
After a couple of weeks and meeting an intact male for the first time he showed aggregation .
Every intact male was the same.
I had Morris castrated at 12 months (8 weeks ago) now he goes for ALL male dogs , he also bit a lady who attempted to stroke him, as well as male neighbor.
He now wears a muzzle when on walks and have to be very careful where I let him off the lead.
Those who say its not the dog its the owner are not always right, I tried to do was re home rather then buying a 8 week old pup.
I hope a behaviorist I have booked will be able to help.
I have to neuter my 2 year old dog because I’m trying to open a home daycare. All animals need to be registered, and to be registered, they have to be neutered/spayed. My kids would never forgive me if I give my dog away to have a licensed business. So to keep him, we have to go with the neutering route. My own research results are the benefits outweigh the risks. By no mean we are being cruel to him.

Neutering and spaying dogs is mostly in North American thing. it is rarely done outside of Canada and the United States as far as I know. If having ovaries and testicles is so bad for dogs how did we come to befriend them and domesticate them so many centuries ago? The entire logic and reasoning around neutering and spaying is entirely ludacris. Dogs can have vasectomies and tubal litigations if you are so worried about overpopulation. Overpopulation it is more of a result of us simply not taking care of the animals we have domesticated. Also, neutering and spaying does not lessen sexual and aggressive behavior. It just saps them of energy since they don't have a natural balance of hormones. I myself had a dog who was very low energy but still hump almost every dog he met. Neutering and spaying can even increase the risk of dementia in later years and bladder problems and a lot of peeing in the house (as one of my dogs did suffer from these symptoms in later years). At least this guy is correct about waiting much longer before fixing a dog as it can negatively impact the dogs growth. Also testicular and ovarian cancer is extremely rare in intact dogs. Even below 10% if I recall correctly. I will never understand this absurd belief that letting a dog stay intact is not the more natural thing to do.

Humping isn’t always sexual. It’s often an alpha thing. My female humps weaker dogs. Some hump pillows.
I totally agree with you. Spaying my first dog is my biggest regret in life.
It is immoral to neuter and spay animals. Imagine yourself in that position would you want your own reproductive organs painfully removed at a very young age? The answer is no you would not. Then don’t do it to animals. It is torture. It is unjust. It is cruel. It is evil. It is sadism. Our society has some serious problems with the way we treat animals.

I'm certainly no medical expert, but couldn't the liver issues, obesity and diabetes be caused from poor diet? Seems to be the case for the owners, so I can't imagine that the poor quality foods and over feeding wouldn't be the main cause of these miladies.
Yes. The higher risk of obesity is because without a reproductive system to fuel the dog needs less calories but people end up feeding the same amount of food or high calorie commercial foods. And diabetes in dogs is mainly about being overweight.
No that's not true I'm a female I had surgery lets just say I got spayed very young I was in my middle 30s now I'm almost 50 my hormones are out of wack and I gained weight and it's very hard for me to lose it even with exercise and diet. So I don't think it's poor diet I believe when your organs are removed you start to develop things.
Low T in humans causes type 2 diabetes and weight gain. Not to mention a lot of other illnesses. I guess this is the case of dogs as well

Pranav Kodagi Not really, 2 years is usually best. Many large breeds don't reach full maturity and development until that age. That's not to say I recommend it at all.

I disagree, he knows well that people hate sterilization, so he plays the game and introduces his supplement. I don't trust vets or pet hotels.They'll do unspeakable, even steal blood from your dog. It happened to us and other people. Only you can truly help your dog. Best is to prevent. Avoid vets!
@@atlas4xtrm12 Do you avoid your doctor too then? The dentist? And the grocery store? They're all out for money too (and those apples in the store were sprayed with pesticides - eek). Everything you buy is based off profit. Going to have to go live in the woods off grid and never trust anyone to help. Pray you don't break a leg that needs surgery or have a heart attack.
It's good to have some guard, but you need to trust someone at some point. Vets go to school for 8 years - and despite what some people think, most do it to help pets. Better to trust them than the internet that has zero training. Yes there are controversies but that's because scientific studies can be faulty and the internet likes to gossip when they know nothing. Unless there is a ton of scientific studies proving it, correlation does not equal causation.
I'm only 12 and I'm scared for my dogs life and don't know if I should or shouldn't neuter him. People say it's good while other people say it's bad and can cause cancer. Please help me.
It is simple. You do not do anything to your pet that you wouldn't do to yourself. Do your own research. Find out how harmful the procedure is.

I kind of figured neutering your dog too early might cause some sort of health issues along the way.
If the tests that ensure your dog is fit to breed can’t be done until he/she is two years old, there’s a good reason for that: the dog isn’t fully developed. X-rays can’t see mild hip dysplasia until the dog is fully grown.

Hysterectomy and Vasectomy are a better option to neutering and spaying. This way they won't have hormonal imbalances.

Halim Amori Exactly. I have never neutered ANY of my male dogs that I've owned over the years. Not one of them had any issues because of it and they lived long and happy lives. I can't tell you how many people and vets I've seen over the years have been shocked that I have not neutered my dog. Just goes to show you how well the PETA spay/neuter your pet propaganda has worked. They created a hysteria based on emotions rather than facts. The over population of cats and dogs in this country is due to irresponsible breeders and irresponsible pet owners. It doesn't have anything to do with whether you spay or neuter your pet.

+Ganaesh Rau If you have 2 males what is the concern? Humping is often a dominance issue and has nothing to do with being neutered or not. Years ago I had a spayed female Rottweiler that humped every other dog in site whether it was male or female. It was her way of saying "I'm the boss". Sometimes neutering a male dog before he reaches sexual maturity can curb humping behavior but not always. I've seen plenty of neutered male and spayed female dogs that hump everything. It's kind of hit or miss and depends on the dog. Dogs are not like humans and don't have sex for pleasure. So they don't "want to have sex from time to time" as you mentioned. The real question is are you willing to risk the future health of your dog just because you don't like that he may try to hump something?

i agree and disagree . I agree with him because i have a dog and i wouldn't want to neuter him unless i have to due to health complications, as a pet parent i have to be his voice since he has none but i don't think i can live with that decision if it didn't have a huge reason in benefiting my dog-son BY DOING SO. Now thats in my case, however, for those people who want to profit out of breeding dogs, i suggest you don't pass one litter because i don't even know a real statistic but I'm pretty sure 2-8 dogs really get a forever home. Other 6 get thrown into the breeding cycle and have more puppies who are just basically money factories and not viewed as a real member of the family
Do you really think that all your dogs grandkids/grandpuppies gonna find forever homes? nope most of them are gonna get thrown around house and communities and live a sad cruel unhumane life and if your not mature enough to understand that you deserve a neutered dog so you won't ruin those puppies life. so before you make that decision think about the future generations/litter of your dogs kin and how many will defiantly die. with that being said if your a responsible pet parent and know people in advance who would want a puppy dont sell them the puppies give it to them for free if they wanna offer you some money thats cool now the only catch with that since they are receiving the puppies for free interview them and be strict with your expectations from them try to check up on them and see how the dogs doing because you don't wanna give your dog kids out to be abused and exploited because bringing a new dog/life into to this world just to be put to death row is FUCKED UP and you should be put to death row for doing so. money comes and goes don't ruin dozens potentially hundred of lives to a make a quick couple hundred bucks .

Why exactly are pets imported if overpopulation is such an issue?
Possibly because it's not an issue anymore. It was a problem in the past so people got into the habit of constantly complaining about the overpopulation, so now that the problem is gone, the habit of complaining about it is still there. Also, the more shelters complain, the more donations they get. At least that's how it is in my country; don't know if it's the same in whatever country the video was made. If I go to a local shelter that doesn't import strays from other countries, I'll hardly find any adoptable dogs there. However, we have lots of private organizations (and some smarter shelters) who use their resources to help dogs in poorer countries and import strays from there to find them homes here.
Another reason for importing a dog, even when you have overpopulation, is that you might be looking for certain characteristics that are just not as common in random strays.
Because overpopulation can be a problem in one area, but not all. There's still countries and cities with loose unaltered dogs walking the streets (street dogs of Mexico and such).
With my local animal shelter we get a lot of dogs exported from southern states in the US because we basically have no stray dogs. We have cats (because they are let outdoors and there's still plenty of people who don't spay/neuter them even though they go outside), but street dogs are very rare and most owners rehome their dogs themselves if they can't care for them. So my local shelter brings dogs up to attract people looking for dogs (in hopes of getting a donation when they're adopted). It's so rare to see small dogs or just generally any breed that isn't a pitbull type or a lab from them. Labs suffer from being the most popular dog breed in the US despite their high energy (most people don't give Labs enough exercise leading to destructive behavior) and the south has a pitbull overpopulation in shelters due to their bad reputation and the dog fighting rings that breed them and abandon them on the streets after.

Karen Amiger it's alright because that's a small dog: they mature faster and are pretty much full geown by 6 months but that doesn't mean they're fully developed, but it's much better to wait until at least a year for small dogs, for medium to large dogs though always wait at least 1-2 years. If you neutered your terrier at 8 months and don't have problems you're lucky, but wait longer next time

That would severely drop adoption rates of rescue animals. It's not just about "oops puppies" but also the mess of heat, urine marking, and an extra expense of a professional trainer if any behavioral problems are hormone related. I've heard even "professionals" being unable to stop marking once the habit starts. So in order for more animals to get homes, this is the go to. At least until better procedures can be created someday.

My dog's AKC breeder requires spaying/neutering before the 1st heat, and rescues do it for you, so how are so many owners even making this choice? Somebody's getting their dogs from backyard breeders and pet shops...

Why would your breeder require early spaying? A neutered dog can’t compete in dog shows. You can’t even do the tests (OFA certification, which used to be required by the AKC) until your dog is two years old, because it’s not fully developed.
She sounds like a “backyard breeder,” and uneducated as well. There are plenty of “boutique” or small breeders (one litter every few years), who do the appropriate research to mate their dog with the soundest dog they can find, to better the breed.
The AKC no longer cares about the betterment of the breeds. Look at how they encourage brachiocephalic traits, in pugs, boxers, bulldogs, etc., and bad hips in German Shepherds. Now they’re accepting mutts (all the poodle mixes). It’s all about $$$.
F*** the AKC. Research your local breed club instead.
@@beachgirl4583 All the local breeders I know follow that spay/neuter contract for small dogs. She shows all her dogs (Chihuahuas) locally in state but they are registered AKC or pet AKC (for agility trials).
She wants the dogs spayed/neutered so the people she sells to aren't breeding the dogs she doesn't keep or sell to other breeders. The dogs she doesn't keep are dogs she's usually deemed not fit to breed or show due to physical traits or shy personalities. She didn't keep my dog because she was shy and has crooked knees, unlike her mother - who I saw personally, and met, along with her siblings. Her mother dog was quiet and sweet like my dog is today.
She holds the show/breeding prospects and has them vetted before breeding for : normal eyes, normal OFA, and normal patellas, etc. (certified). All get vet checked, some get shown before breeding.
She doesn't sell teacup Chihuahuas because they don't exist. She shows you the parents if they're on her property, and the rest of the litter. Her dogs don't have more than 1 litter a year, and they're all rehomed by her at appropriate ages. She has in her contract that I must give my dog back to her instead of bringing her to a shelter if I can't keep her. She loves when owners give her updates. All signs she cares about the dogs. I've emailed her often over the years and met her twice to pick out my dog and then for her to give her to me at 10 weeks - after she was sure my dog weighed enough to be less at risk for low blood sugar (all tiny puppies under 2 lbs can easily get low blood sugar, breed doesn't matter).
Breeder wise, they can't get better. Only thing better is rescue for the sake of the stray dogs.
So..I think your breeders are no better and maybe less so responsible because they're trusting the owners not to become backyard breeders without a contract (leading to more shelter animals).
Chihuahuas are one of the healthiest breeds out there (which may not say much, but it says better than most other breeds). Bulldogs, Pugs, and Boston Terriers just need to be banned. I agree smooshed faced dogs shouldn't be bred. They can't breathe! But you don't need to associate with the AKC to breed a Pug. A Pug is a breed, not an organization.

I paid a lot for pick of the litter, and intended to breed her. However, she has a high strung personality, and several phobias, so I’m not going to, even though she’s healthy and sound.
I’m not spaying her. I’m a responsible owner, and her health is important to me.
One of the most messed up breeders I know let a brother/sister pregnancy go to term, and even showed one of the pups. That’s completely irresponsible.

She has a spay/neuter contract for pet puppies because most are sold as puppies and you can't tell if all their joints are healthy until like 2 years old or so and it's with a vet certification most pet owners don't do (not to mention pet owners don't usually pay attention to personality). She also doesn't want "pet quality" puppies becoming breeders even by accident. The dogs she sells as breeders go to other well established breeders (she needs proof).
There was a pit bull type dog that came in for a spay at my school's teaching vet clinic after having puppies with either her brother or father. It was an accident (just family pets) and not intended - they weren't trying to breed dogs. But they also didn't want to end the pregnancy because people are touchy about that (and that's usually done by spaying - which is probably why those irresponsible breeders you mentioned let the puppies be born anyway - they didn't want to lose a breeding dog). The family I mentioned spayed the dog to prevent more litters at our clinic. The strict and experienced breeders make sure to keep intact males and females older than a few months apart at all times until purposely breeding them. Point is, you have to be aware you need to be super aware of other intact dogs if you have one. One mistake and puppies. It's like having a full time toddler but this one can have babies. They'll get away and breed if you turn your back while they're in heat.

I’ve kept my current Lab intact (she’s 7), and I don’t let her get into situations where a pregnancy can occur. She was supposed to be my assistance dog, but her personality isn’t suitable.
Neutering my dog was a horrible decision. I neutered him at age 3, He was so calm, social, and loving before hand. But afterwards, he became MUCH more aggressive to everyone and wanted absolutely nothing to do with me. I thought it was the medication and it wear off, but he never went back to his old self.

SOOOO you hacked up your own dog because you are going to look after a friends dog that was having puppies. Just keep them apart or have a friend look after your male. such a great owner! and nice way to push your item at the end. You are old school. In Belgium it is compulsory to castrate every cat and dog before the age of 6 months. Even if you give away a kitten for free, this kitten must be neutered and chipped, otherwise you get a big fine. It is healthy for them because they are less likely to get cancer and their hormones no longer affect them. And you avoid unwanted litters. There are already enough cats and dogs in the world. If you love your pet, please neutralize him / her.

Dogs don’t complete growing until they’re two. You can’t get their hips certified until they’re full grown (2 years old). Why would you risk your dog’s long term health by early spay/neuter?
