Finally a video that tells me how to put it back together when I took off the entire spool and couldn't get it to lock up again. Thank you for the helpful video.
@gambit1216 yeah that spring can put some solid tension when putting it back, you can always take more material away to make it easier but remember, when you're out there cutting you need it to not easily come open. 👍🏼
My trimmer was fine until I went to use it today, it's been a while since I've used it due to losing my home in a fire, my landlord leaves the grass to grow too high so I decided to make the place look nice. I got the head off but could not get it back on some white lithium grease spray and some love taps with a hammer to work it back and forth fixed it for me. I'll probably buy a new head and take time to spray some lube every once in a while.
Definitely some preventative maintenance a long way with all tools. There's always a landlord out there ready to neglect some responsibilities. Thanks for sharing vega, sorry to hear about the fire, but you're alive and that's what matters
@TOOL_TECHNICAL yeah as a former landlord I always liked to make the house look nice especially when edging the lawn. Thanks for your kind words everyone including all the pets made it out safely.
@@xLTxVEGAx I always tell my neighbors if there is ever a fire leave me and grab my dog 1st lol that's my baby, she just 9 a few days ago. I think it is fair that if a tenant maintains the property, waters and trims /edges lawn/backyard, trims hedges and branches, and clears leaves, snow and clears trash then they should have a rent discount for sure.
@@TOOL_TECHNICAL I agree with you completely get the woman children and pets out first then come back for me. I also agree with the reasoning that if a tenant is providing full landscaping/snow removal service they should have some sort of discount or at least be paid to do so.
Thank you so much for your video. I was able to take it apart but it would not move to reattach. I used a box cutter to trim a small amount off and it worked perfrctly. Finished the yard and now a happy wife.
Dude, this was very very helpful. I've owned my trimmer for a couple months and have had to stop using it because I couldn't get it open. What a PITA I tell you. This trick made all the difference. Thank you!!!!
Thank you for this video! I could not get the replacement head to my Ryobi trimmer to lock. I watched numerous videos, including manufacture’s vid and found no help. I was doing everything the direction said to do. It wasn’t until well into your vid that you explained the locking process and how it worked and how to loosen it up. That did the trick. Good job!
glad I could help. Not everyone is at the same knowledge level so I have to cram in as much info as I can for anyone who needs it! I do try to cut and shorten my videos to the meat of the topic but hey appreciate you hangin out and learning a thing or two :) ~ Work Smart
From a retired outdoor equipment dealer ... how about at least once a month unlock an lock the head to keep it clean an usable, I've used this head for years, you'll won't need the screwdriver.
doubt you've tried to open these ryobi heads by hand. even with pliers they're no walk in the park. this isn't a maintenance thing, this is user interface thing. new out of the box these things are a bear to take off. removing some material allows it to slide easier and open which is needed to clear snags or remove string that has pulled itself in prematurely. same thing goes with the harts I believe. If they are this hard, half the people will return them, the other half may break them trying to open them. I brought my first one back to the store thinking it was jammed or glued from the factory and watched 3 guys at home depot try and fail to open by hand. Hopefully this video encourages people to keep and mod them this way. also perhaps even reach ryobi to slightly alter the head design for slightly easier maintenance.
Thank you for this. I was about ready to destroy my new Ryobi out of pure rage. Why would they sell something that has this flaw? I watched other "how to" change the line, and they showed their going from lock to unlock with an easy twist and I couldn't figure out why mine wouldn't open.
Thanks for sharing jeff, all tool brands have some tools they nail and others whose designs and performance could definitely do with improvement. Hopefully Ryobi comes across this and fixes the design, not only the one that comes included but the replacement heads for it too. Appreciate you finding my video rather than throwing a good tool out. When I first got mine I was partially convinced I got one that was glued shut
@HamSandwich07 If you mean just the easy reel/bump assembly replacement, you'll get it at home depot www.homedepot.com/p/RYOBI-REEL-EASY-Bump-Feed-String-Head-with-Speed-Winder-AC053N1BFH/311264918
Things I learned: 1. modifying voids the warranty. 2. you have to modify to get the dang thing to work. 3. people on the internet are weird. All of this is correct.
sounds about right. fortunately we the consumers can modify the tool into what we need vs waiting for the platforms/brands we use to "invent" a small tweak and charge the same or MORE for essentially the same tool the way it should've been to begin with
Absolutely worst purchase trimmer purchase I've made to date. I watched the original video, and this one and after 3 days of fighting this, I got the head off. Goodie. Now I can't get it back on. I'm done. Won't be buying anything Ryobi again.
Definitely understand frustrations with some tool designs but condemning an entire brand because of one tool isn't ideal. When you say get the head off, do you mean opening the head to add new string? What model are you using? If you can't get it back on, as I showed in the video shaving some of the material where the lock engages significantly reduces the force needed to unlock and lock the head
@@TOOL_TECHNICAL I own other RYOBI products that I have never had problems with. But, the fact that I've spent a solid week trying to simply try to figure out how to remove the head of this thing and now can't get it back on and can't take it to get serviced, makes me understand that the amount of customer service you are going to get if you have a problem is nil. I have filed down the edges like you have said. So, I have purchased another trimmer, with a 4 year warrantee and the possibility of having some local help if I need it. It's not the product itself that I have a problem with necessarily, but the fact that there is no customer service when there is one.
@@mrs.donohue9569 ahh I see thank you for sharing that, customer service can truly make or break an experience with anything from food to tools. I know Hawaii has little to no local Ryobi authorized repair locations and having to ship them to the mainland for warranties has many Hawaiians turning their backs on the green tools. I'm just curious as to what exactly is stopping your tool from coming back together. The entire point of Ryobi's EZ reel system was to minimize assembly and frustration.
Thank you so much! I have STRUGGLED to get the bump head off by myself complaining it was made for giant man hands. Perfect hack!
glad i could help wizard

@pianozanne no problem, it can be tough getting used to a new tool. Glad I could help :)

Getting it apart was easy. Getting it back together was a pita.

Too complicated
what part ? lol scraping plastic so the notches slide easier should be relatively straight forward.
