Astounding, this has got to be the greatest production lesson I got recently. Your methods of presentations are so incredibly clean and easy to understand, it really doesn't get much better than this. Thank you very much.
dude i’m just gonna say as the guy that see’s successful producers projects, this is ass and very old to be applicable in modern productions people are way ahead now
I've been producing for years at a fairly average level - transcending amateur into professional has always been a dream of mine, and because of your videos I believe I'm getting closer. I cannot thank you enough, ELPHNT. Your videos are criminally underwatched, and very few (if any) compare to your quality of content. I'm no poet, so I do not know how express gratitude eloquently, but know in time I'm going to spend so much damn money on your website. I encourage others who have been inspired by ELPHNT to do the same, and support this incredible producer. Love from Australia.
yes,we need more plug-in that help us understand in a better way dynamics. Music is movement(not in a dancefloor oriented meaning),so overcomprossed music is not really Music.
That's such a great tool ! I used to put an Utility after an effect to do gain compensation manually and group it with the device to switch on/off to see how it really affect the sound. This gonna save me a lot of time and struggle ! Let's hope in the future Ableton will add a Gain Compensation switch in all of their tool. Thank you so much for sharing, great work as usual !
Came here because of All you need is live, and didn't regret it, amazing stuff, and will surely help my production process 😍 thanks for sharing your knowledge
Great tip, thanks! Ableton should really consider hiring you to do their video tutorials. Not only you always give us solid information, but present them in a very professional and nice paced way. Keep up the wonderful work. Cheers!
thank you. im a young producer and i dont have money. i was looking for a gain compensation plugin like this one but it costed money. thank you for allowing us to get this for free. you are a hero.
Finally somebody showed this issue in an easy way to understand for the novices. I knew about the importance of matching the loudness of your effects, but many people still not realizing how biased they are being at applying effects and not knowing exactly what they are doing, most of the time for worse due to the diminished dynamic range.
I miss so much the Point Blank module "Intro To Music Production" only because of you, your perfect way of speaking and teaching. Thank you for this plugin man! A heaven sent.
I have to say, the maker of this m4l device has been super responsive and on it with updates. So happy I donated some money to him as this developer definitely deserves it.
New to the channel your content is light years ahead of most. Glad to have found you. Gain compensation is making me go through all my plugins again and re thinking. Than you.
I just want to thank you for this eye opener. I’ve been making music since the Amiga days and things only got more difficult around 10 years ago when every tutorial surfaced showing people slap compressors all over everything. For the last 8 or so years i have never been happy with my mixes either because of over eqing to compensate a bad room or doing dumb compression or tube saturation to make everything overly loud. I have a treated room now, hd600 headphones and took all the compressors off, making better choices of drum samples & synth patches instead. My main focus is tone and composition now, not volume!
love this! but if you'd like more control, I think it's worth mentioning the GOAT of overlooked devices, Utility. Using your eyes on the meter, you can set the amount of gain after an effect using utility. This is also helpful for spatial/stereo effects as utility has a built in m/s control. of course, there's pro's and con's to anything, and the biggest pro of the Gain Compensation device is it allows you the producer to focus on the effect and not the level, leaving you to focus on the most important part, the feeling. Seriously, big thank you to LAEX and you, elphnt, for your incredible contributions to the live community.
+1 for Utility. Super useful tool. I guess the benefit of the Max device is it does it automatically for you, almost like an invisible hand on the volume control so you can focus on what you're adjusting. If you've got a MIDI controller where you can be adjusting the effect with one hand and the volume on a Utility with the other then for sure, Utility is perfect 👌
I originally didn't realize you were talking about an existing device here, and thought this video was just covering a general topic. This M4L Device (pair) is extremely useful and your channel deserves more followers so I'm going to be recommending you to the homies.
Great!! I always asked in every sound course if there was any plugin or max4live processor that makes that automatic gain compensation!! Finally someone made it! Yeeeeeeeeessssss!!!! Thanks for sharing the info!
It might not mean much but what I really like is how, when A/B testing (no compression vs compression for example), you stop speaking and play both loops twice, instead of once. This makes a lot of difference to me because you can hear the transition from A to B but also from B to A. And hearing it twice allows me to focus on hearing the difference. So many RUclips videos get this wrong and speak during the A/B testing phase. Your way of doing it is perfect and you did it all through the video.
The way you show examples in order to bring across a point is fantastic. Production quality of your videos is amazing, keep up the great work! Already learned a few new things that I knew about, but never actually applied in my workflow until now! :)
Been looking for something that does this...like the FabFilter ProL2 and a few other plugins do. Thank you! PS love the clear and clean presentation in your videos. 👏🏼
This should be added to the standard plugins from live! you do a very good job man :) i found i always very disturbing to compensate the volumes all the time manual and by ear / eye. So thank you for that
coming back a few months later to say this is maybe the most useful max device besides lfo [edit] plus i use it more than lfo, it's my most used device!
As others have said, one of best tutorials I've ever seen. But lately the only one that's really taught me something that will help me in my production. Thank you and I guess I had you followed for a reason (;
Downloaded the max plugin the second I finished the video. This will help improve my workflow immensely. I often find myself doing this kind of thing manually to not get caught in a loudness civil war on my song; being able to just drag this over and do it is going to help a lot.
Use LUFS meter before/after processing each channel. Always A-B test what you did. LUFS is better because it follows an equal loudness curve, so follows how you perceive sound rather than simply peak/RMS metering.
This is huge

Downvotes? Really? Why? Such an amazing video.
I bought a 5,000 software compressor and it's the best one in the existence of digital compression.
Bro your videos are literally perfect.
Thanks 😊

This has been one of my biggest complaints against Live's built-in effects for years. Thanks for addressing this issue, Tom! It looks amazing.
