I've always loved Sargent. I didn't know much about him and his life - but his work is the window I used. Every single choice he makes speaks of an extraordinary, intelligent and sensible person.
I read a story of an outing that Sargent took with Monet and several other artists. Upon becoming inspired but not having his own pallette he asked Monet if he could use his but when he viewed the colors he handed it back and said "There's no black. I can't paint without black." Thus I always pay attention to how he uses it in any given piece. And what can I say? I just love Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose..all the different types of illumination! Lots of black, too...
I like the portrait of Mrs. Fiske Warren MFA Boston. It's painted at real size, and as you mentioned you can see the brush strokes clearly when standing nearby.
The story is a bit longer than I can explain here, but there are some great articles on it. Basically, the first version of the painting had one of her straps hanging down, making it even more sexual. And the sitter indeed had no the best reputation with regards to her morals. Sargent was then 'forced' to repaint it with the strap up.

Great choice, I remember seeing it many years ago!
John Singer sargent画伯のアリゲータは動きが上手く描かれていると思いました。彩色が近代の感じがしました。
I agree with you
❤
Thank you
I still don't really understand the controversy about Madame X. Was it a problem the model was so easily recognised? Perhaps she a bad reputation?
