Great coverage of a forgotten 911 :) I suspect the forthcoming 992ST will be another marketing exercise like the recent 992T. Highly unlikely we will ever see another true lightweight 911.
It's already been unveiled fairly light not like original but needs alot more safety features then original. Has alot of bespoke parts, a manual. I like it. A newer 911r actually is what it reminds of
@@9WERKSTV Awesome, you have the access, knowledge and enthusiasm and put in the effort that nobody else in this space does. Your channel deserves to and will blow up - forge ahead Lee!
Great to see a review of a proper S/T. There are so many “ST replicas” out there which are just a back date with later large displacement engine and some wheel flares- not the same experience at all. The sound and the pick up and the light weight are the key features! Great video.
I don’t know about that. I fell in love with them in 1963 at age 15 when someone who attended my mom’s funeral asked how I liked our PorschEE. We had a Karmann Ghia so I had to ask my father sitting beside me what this one. I got a 356B Super Roadster but I had never heard of this about two years ago.
This is most kind, Toby, thank you for your continued support into what I do. Great to hear this is one of your favourite videos - it's certainly one of my favourite drives.
As an unconditionnal fan of the 911ST (especially in 1972), your content is really good. Minors errors are here but otherwise it's really good, the best part was when you mentionned the 901 gearbox and before the PDF manual to create an ST. This car is of course not a factory ST but it might have racing history. Thanks for your content !
Porsche began offering the M491 option (also called the wide body or Turbo Look) on the 3.2 Carrera in 1984 and It remained an option from 84 to 89. The 87-89 models also have the desirable G50 transmission. The M491 option is much more than stretched fenders.
Great video Lee. Thanks. Really interesting. A rare car indeed. Great to hear about the history. My favourite body shape of them all and why I own an ST Backdate.
thank you for making this video. I was so captivated by the driving footage of this car, haven't felt this way in a long time. the love of 911s is such a deep rabbit hole
I've stopped at 5 mins to try and get collect my thoughts.. So it's a 911 S that's made as light at the T at the same and you could option to have certain things done to the engine/interior/exterior? So essentially a 911 motorsport touring type car?
ST means it was pulled off the production line at different stages and sold to racing teams. Sold without wheels, windows, paint ,suspension, seats, some body panels etc. The success of those racing teams led to Porsche’s own homologation RSs in the 70s.
The Porsche Club of America's monthly magazine includes an article spotlighting the 911ST every year or two. So it's not that obscure in Porsche circles.
It's nice to see a genuine S/T but didn't Porsche restore one recently? The type has been well documented, and it's almost comical that you are overemphasizing its "secrecy."
So 200hp and 900kilos.. great ratio. Umm full roll cage and proper build mind boggling. Own an 83 e30 2 liter 6. 883 kilo and it has 145 hp. A little beast
The ST 2.5 engine spec is 275 bhp @ 7800 and the lightest documented ST weighed 789 kilo. I've read they were clocked at 185 mph on the Mulsanne straight in 1971 ish. All that with no duck tail and no front spoiler. I've got a 72 911E and I can tell you those early cars get very front end light above 130 mph, the duck and front spoiler are definitely needed for high speed, so 185 in an early car is something to wake up the senses!
Fun car, but ultimately, given the ridiculous valuation, a rattly old shed. Honestly, the confirmation bias is off the map with these cars. It's worth so much and the hype is so great, people convince themselves tin cans like this with awful gearshifts and ropey steering are the second coming of christ. To be clear, I do like old 911s. They're a lot of fun. At least they were before the valuations went crazy. Judged on current valuations, they're a joke. Something like a 996.2 GT3 is infinitely more precise, has just as good throttle response, sounds miles better than this old tractor, goes far better, is easier to live with, the works. I repeat, I do like old 911s. But when even something as mediocre as a 70s 2.2S is now £200k for a really nice one, let alone the insane valuation of an ST, they become laughably over valued sheds hyped up by fashion victims. As it happens, the 959 is another good example. It's not a great driver's car by any stretch, but it's still hyped up as some kind of Jesusmobile. It's all very, very silly.
@@9WERKSTV It was a bit grumpy, but to paraphrase the Incredibles, if everything's great, nothing is, and the hype over old 911s is getting silly, and I say that as someone who really likes them. Some sort of recognition re the ridiculousness of the valuation and the numerous limitations of the driving experience would give any positive analysis so much more impact. As it is, well, the next old 911 will be great, and the one after that and it's all pretty meaningless. I guarantee the gearchange on that ST is pretty horrible, the steering is probably pretty vague around the dead ahead - or maybe not, one can't really say anything from content like this, because everything is just 'amazeballs'.
Small addenda: the code M491 was originally designated RSR, before it became the code for Turbo-look in the 1980s.
Great coverage of a forgotten 911 :) I suspect the forthcoming 992ST will be another marketing exercise like the recent 992T. Highly unlikely we will ever see another true lightweight 911.
Porsche might suprise us

Present day safety regulations forbid it, hence the value of the old cars.
The noise of that engine is perfect mechanical music. Delicious!
Incredible machine, and great video! You continue featuring cars and people that nobody else does, or can. Thanks Lee!
This is such a decent comment that genuinely inspires me to keep doing what I'm doing. Thank you.

Amazing car, love the colour, and thanks for taking us through it
Absolutely my pleasure.
you know the car is awesome when the driver just can't stop smiling....what a joy
Honestly I have never heard of a 911 ST until about 3 days ago. What a car.....and the visceral sound of that air cooled carb'd flat six!!!
No secret to mid life Porsche cognoscenti! A wonderful genuine reaction Lee, thanks for another great video.
Absolutely my pleasure. Thanks for the kind words, Chris!

Truly a homologation special. Lightest weight of the base car plus the most powerful engine of the heavier top spec.
Now that’s one of my most favourite of your videos Lee. Great stuff. Mega want one 😊💚

Amazing car and another great vid. The way it revs and revs.... like a modern GT3!
Thanks Kyle, it's a very special car.
Amazing, I love the facial expressions as you were accelerating. The sound is awesome.
Great work Lee,
What a gorgeous car!
Thank you!
What a superb video and new reference point for these remarkable and rare cars. Well done Lee. 🐐
A pleasure and a privilege to drive the car, thanks for your kindness in allowing me to do it.
Can't get better than this! Congrats for this special review!

My pleasure George, hope you're well mate.
@@9WERKSTV 🙌🙏 indeed, hope you are well also. Looking forward to a ride in a GT4 RS next month 😍
Where did you find the PDF from 3:43 ? I'm interested in this document for my 911...

Oh goodness me ! The sound is ------------ words fail me !
My dream car! the most gorgeous 911, I will choose this one over the new 992
Wow, such a raw driving experience, well jel.
the engine sound is facinating wow..
I learned a lot! Thanks for great video.
Great video Lee. Thanks. Really interesting. A rare car indeed. Great to hear about the history. My favourite body shape of them all and why I own an ST Backdate.
Great to hear you own a backdate, based on such a special car!
What a blast it must be to drive that car! See if they'll let you do it again Lee!
top video, insightful and pure passion >5000 rpm 💥
thank you for making this video.

Very interesting Video ❣️👍🏼
I love your passion for the 911 and I can ever learn a lot of the details 😋👌🏼
Love from Berlin 🇩🇪
Ramsi 😘
Great video. Did I miss something? Did you ascertain whether it was a factory copy or a product of an off-site performance shop?
This is a genuine factory car.
It certainly is 🐐
For a moment, the colour and the rims made me think this was Chris Harris' old hot-rodded ST, which is frankly my ideal 911.
Any inside information available on the 992ST
thank u............people are talking about these cars....folks who know 911's ha
ve always
known of these gems

What a car....lucky you!
Going to be an amazing car! Trying to get an allocation…
Haha! Thought you were taking a peek at the coming 992 ST. Do you have anything to share? Motorsport engine? 6-spd?
Simply marvellous 🤪👏
Sooooo looks like someone knows the new ST is coming hahaha
Great video, awesome car. 👍🏻
Sounds Epic
The Porsche Club of America's monthly magazine includes an article spotlighting the 911ST every year or two. So it's not that obscure in Porsche circles.
Enjoyed the video, but I did have bit of a chuckle at "They're all unique, and this car is no different!"
Hahahaha I'd not picked up on that until now.
I found 8 currently for sale with an absolute stunner in white. All in their motherland tho. Cheapest being €169k. Beautiful cars though.
Certainly replicas. If one of the 23 factory built STs will ever come to an auction, it will exceed 2 Mio.
That sound...
Fabulous!
My favourite long bonnet
Likewise
I've always preferred ST's to RS's
That goes into my top 5 best sounding cars list, lovely.
Agreed, it sounds mega.
it's Jerry's favorite, I think knows them all.
Hi thanks.i love Germany.
I’d like the video twice. ❤
