A friend of mine is an E-9 Master Sgt, and he often talks about his 'drill sgt.' days, years ago in his career. He's expressed many times that he loved being a Drill Sgt., making men out of boys, and he had to be tough on them to earn their respect and mold them into soldiers. Off base and in the real world, he's one of the nicest people you would ever meet, but put a uniform on him and he becomes All-Army, and he doesn't put up with too much of anything from the troops. Oh, and he's been in for 28 years, and he still doesn't want to retire, though he could.

Graduated from fort Jackson last Thursday. When I got to reception they had us do a crap ton of paperwork and then got us PT clothes. After a few more hours they sent us up to the bays and we changed into our PT clothes. I was there for 5 days and we never had to turn anything in and got to keep our phones. We put them in bags with our roster number and they were in crates like you said. We turned in our phones and our civilians and all the stuff considered “contraband”
Hey there! Thank you for your service! I’m being shipped out in 2 weeks. In terms of phone usage, I’ve been hearing, he get to use our phones every Sunday? Is that true? What about foot wear? Did you bring 1 pair of shoes and 1 pair of running shoes? Lastly, underwear, is it true that is has to be white clothing? (Boxers having to be white, socks?..etc)
So this depends on the Branch. In the AF we wore civilian clothes for the first two days. Our bags were brought with us to our actual dorm and locked in a closet, including our cellphones.
I went to basic training at Ft. Sill in 2009. I was told not to bring my cell phone at all. Once I arrived I was told if I wanted it I should have it mailed to be. Once that happened. The DI had me remove the battery, place the battery, charger and phone in a Ziploc bag. I only had access to my phone for maybe two hours on Sundays after "Blue" phase. In AIT, we could store our phones in lockers, but only were supposed use them between evening chow and lights out.
Interesting, so in Germany we just get to keep all of our stuff for basic, you just have to make sure that what ever civilian clothes you bring are hung neatly in the designated part of your locker or in a duffle bag under your bed.
Got two phone calls (collect) home in Marine Bootcamp back in 1992. First for platoon highest score in USMC history and customs, and second for getting one of the top 5 scores in the company on the rifle range. Nobody was home either time.
New upload while I'm waiting to leave for the airport, great timing! Thanks for all the informative videos, I know I wouldn't be as prepared as I feel without your channel!
Awesome video man. It would be cool to see a video of you showing us how to pack a back for basic instead of explaining it. Like showing us the minimum amount needed to pack or something: just a idea
For the Navy it goes like this: You arrive at night, make your initial phone call with your cell phone telling your parents you arrived. After that you go into the ditty issue room. Pack everything you brought with you besides an address book and maybe other things into a box. Write your info and the box is stored until the day you leave
I will save you time. At 30th AG Reception at Fort Benning, you get your phone and personal clothing locked up in your personal bag until you are given the chance to call someone stating you are about to leave for Basic Training. When you leave to go to basic training, you will be given a chance to call, stating you have arrived. They then give you an envelope with a plastic bag and your roster number in it. You will put it in the bag and turn it in to the Drill Sergeants. Depending on your company, you may or may not get chances to make phone calls to home.
I’ve always heard. Now granted I didn’t serve in the military, as much as I would have loved too, but anyway had friends who served and I was told when you go for basic. They told me just bring yourself. That’s it. That and the clothes you have on. But. This was 35 years ago. Not sure how it is today
My brother just got his coin and graduated in the Air Force it was in San Antonio Texas it was so nice and fun seeing him and hanging out with him after 2 months we got a couple of phone calls tho on thanksgiving to 🖤 I love my brother and while we was there he got me a bear that say someone loves my in the Air Force 🥰😊
I like how everyone gets packing lists for Basic but then all the recruiters just tell you not to bring anything but ID and a bank card lol Looking forward to shoving what little stuff I own now into storage with my folks and leaving it all in the past.
Matt you always drop the videos i need at the right time love the videos keep up the great work you’re a big inspiration to start my channel once I’m done AIT
Typo Kaz Nah I made this comment before I went to army basic training. For me, after reception, they took our phones and stored them and let us use them periodically
Shipping to ft lenarwood April, 3rd 12b pretty excited honestly feel pretty prepared but the best advice I've gotten yet is dont stand out, and most of all to embrace the suck
You get to keep your stuff and wear your civies and everything while in reception. At least up until you get your uniforms issued to you and do your first shopette run. Only lasts for a week at most. You can also have your personal Bible sent to you as well
I was at fort sill in 08 for basic. We kept all of our personal items during reception but once we got to BCT, they took everything and locked it up. Got everything back on family day I believe
They told us they were fine with us using our own running shoes 10 years ago at Ft. Benning. We turned our phones in but another company were allowed their phones on Sunday. Drill Sergeants told us they were experimenting if it would get in the way and we just wrote letters to talk to our families. They took away snacks and stuff unless "you got sent enough for the whole bct platoon. My buddy shipped to Ft. Leonard Wood so I'm curious how they do things now. Super jealous of the new pink and greens and OCPs now, the blues look like ass imo. And ACUs and velcro made anyone look amateur next to a Marine in their cammies since ACUs fit like a paper bag.
Oh damn I went through basic in 2007 and our phones got locked away with our personal stuff the whole time. We had to use calling cards and wait in line at pay phones. I feel old now. Cool to see they have changed those ancient ways!
Hey Matt, your videos have been super helpful for me, a parent of an Army recruit at Fort Benning. My question is , when will they learn what battalion they are assigned etc. I ask because my wife and I have downloaded Sandbox which is a Military app to write letters to our soldier. In order to get the letters sent though, we need his battalion and unit number. When he left, he didn’t have this info
At Ft. Leonardwood we had a phone room and our personal bags were in there as well. Our phones were in a plastic baggy with our last names and our roster number. We also only got phones during Thanksgiving and when we phased up. Every base is different. I was also a winter cycle.
Pretty informative video. I wouldn’t count on using your cellphone more than 3 times total while at OSUT at Ft. Benning. Used my phone once when I arrived at 30th AG letting family know where I’m at, used at the end of Red phase and on the day of family day. After that it wasn’t seen till I graduated . Best advice for anyone about to hit reception is , it’s the Army . It’s not summer camp, remember why your there and don’t go to sick call! Dress right dress, don’t ever call your drill Sgt. anything but drill Sgt. clean your hands, wipe your ass wipe and stay away from the Females...that goes for BCT & big army.
Matt Ward I want to go into the USNA after I graduate high school (I’m a sophomore) but I am trans and there is a ban on transgender people going into the military/USNA I was just wondering if you have any advice i could use to try and serve and still be out as trans)
Bored in the hotel, shipping out tomorrow @ Ft. Leonardwood why not watch some more of Ward's videos? Lol. Seriously though, I've been watching the hell out of your videos and I've learned a ton and I gotta thank you for keeping it real with all the tips and information.
That’s interesting in the Marines they don’t even allow that they make you ship it all home. I think this idea is better for all branches to store it in a room.
Fort Jackson 04 basic/AIT... they took all your civilian stuff but my advice. for liquid/aerosol supplies like body spray, deodorant, mouth wash, any alcohol based items, etc. buy the cheapest, smallest travelers kit version... because ALL that is trashed in reception.
Yes Jackson you get to keep it up until about 2-3 days prior to your departure for actual basic combat training, I just graduated from Jackson 8 weeks ago
Probably too late on this. But I went to Fort Jackson in 2016. You do indeed get to bring your phone. The day before you pleasently meet your drill sgts. They take your phone away and is given to your drill sgts for safe keeping.
My girlfriend went to Fort Jackson for basic training she did have her phone for abour 4 to 6 days I believe during reception. However there may have been a delay specific to that time resulting in having their phones longer
a friend of mine in basic had a zippo given to him by his grandfather. it was over 50 years old. when he got his stuff back after basic, it was missing. 2 weeks later, he found a drill sgt who had it and called him a thief. the DSgt lied and said it was always his. the MPs showed up and not only found his GF's initials in it, but arrested the Dsgt for theft.

Why did anyone dislike this? It’s completely educational
I’m swearing in this Thursday to the Army 😬
Howd it go
HeresMikey! nigga it’s been a year
Hyplex Gaming lmfaoooo
Hyplex Gaming 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Interesting, so in Germany we just get to keep all of our stuff for basic, you just have to make sure that what ever civilian clothes you bring are hung neatly in the designated part of your locker or in a duffle bag under your bed.
On the bus from Atlanta airport to fort Benning, thanks for all the tips matt. Wish me luck!
Just what I needed!!! Leave to Fort Benning in a month!!! Wish me luck guys
Going to Fort Sill in December so it’s time to start watching these again.
I’m going to Fort Jackson next week Monday, Aug. 20
SUGAr Puff Puff August 28th 💯

SUGAr Puff Puff
Me too !!
my shipping date is 17SSep but still waitting for the background check
same!
Got two phone calls (collect) home in Marine Bootcamp back in 1992. First for platoon highest score in USMC history and customs, and second for getting one of the top 5 scores in the company on the rifle range. Nobody was home either time.
Who else sometimes goes to the comments of these videos to see the comments from people who have also been through basic
Just don't bother bringing anything. At least when I went through Marine Corp. Basic back in 97' they take everything and lock it up untill you leave.
So I should just go naked than 😳😹 might aswell, they're gonna take everything
Damn I’m leaving for basic and I was about to ask my recruiter this but you beat me to it, thanks for the info
chase pissani how is life for you now?
Shipping out to Fort Benning on March 18th. Thanks for the information!!
Good luck days getting closer
@@uzirodriguez9505 I know man. Very nervous. For me it'll be a bittersweet journey but it's something that I've always dreamed of doing.
Ayee I'm shipping out the same day as you but I'm going to fort sill 💪
Our stuff went into a locked closet and didn’t see it again until we graduated.
I didn’t bring anything except the clothes on my back.
going to Fort Benning on NOV 4th for OSUT as 19D..... I'm so thankful for all of your videos Matt.
New upload while I'm waiting to leave for the airport, great timing! Thanks for all the informative videos, I know I wouldn't be as prepared as I feel without your channel!
I head to Fort Jackson on the 20th... Four days away xd Thanks for all the help Matt, your videos have definitely prepared me
hey man, any updates to you?
@@phildeguzman6239 currently stationed at Fort Campbell and I'm E4 promoteable :)
@@jonihelsing i am not familiar with the terminologies tho haha but thank you for replying! I'm glad that you're doing fine! This is crazy 😂
Your videos have been extremely helpful ! I ship out to Fort Jackson September 3rd ! Thank you for all that you do !
Leaving for Fort Sill tomorrow, thx for the video! Been watching your videos for a while now and it’s some great information!
How was your experience at sill?
hey man, any updates to you?
I like how everyone gets packing lists for Basic but then all the recruiters just tell you not to bring anything but ID and a bank card lol
Looking forward to shoving what little stuff I own now into storage with my folks and leaving it all in the past.
I really want to join, but we’re in quarantine and my stamina has definitely deteriorated 😂 thinking of RSP
Dunno bout you, but i just take a couple of runs a week.
If you dont wanna risk it just run early in the morning, theres virtually no people.
Did you join??
Matt you always drop the videos i need at the right time love the videos keep up the great work you’re a big inspiration to start my channel once I’m done AIT
You keep your phone at reception at fort Jackson, when you ship to BCT they take it after your 30 second phone call.
Louie Watson Lol what? Fort Leonard Wood is a joke, go to benning for the the real deal.
Louie Watson where you don’t even use ruck sacks and carry assault packs on FTX’s? Fort Benning is the hell of basic, then comes Jackson.
Louie Watson and I thought we were one army? Why tf are you starting hate on one of your fellow soldiers? Shows the content of your Army values.
@@josephthompson7068 this dude really comparing Basic Training lol. BCT is literally like high school where they hold your hand.
I leave to Fort Jackson for Basic on June 27th. Thank you for posting these videos they are extremely helpful.
Did they go through your phone?
Actually they find out what type of phone you have. They then throw it away and send a new one to your house
Yeah right
Wait really?
Typo Kaz Nah I made this comment before I went to army basic training. For me, after reception, they took our phones and stored them and let us use them periodically
@@claysoggyfries Oh-
Okay then

Shipping to ft lenarwood April, 3rd 12b pretty excited honestly feel pretty prepared but the best advice I've gotten yet is dont stand out, and most of all to embrace the suck
hey man, any updates to you?
leaving for Benning on July 1st 2019 MOS 19D thank you for another great video for me to watch and learn from!!
hey man, any updates to you?
Going to Fort Jackson Monday August 20th. Obsessed with your videos, thanks for the tips!
Marines were taking too long to ship me to Paris island so I switched to army....now I just wait for paperwork to go thru
hey man, any updates to you?
You get to keep your stuff and wear your civies and everything while in reception. At least up until you get your uniforms issued to you and do your first shopette run. Only lasts for a week at most. You can also have your personal Bible sent to you as well
I have been watching your videos to learn what my son is going through, he is entering blue phase and so close to graduation
super excited , i’ve watched almost all of your videos and feel less nervous about going . Ft jackson in 2 months 68W!
Jay R congrats man! Im almost officially signed up! I would be going to bt in june!
Hey Matt, do you mind doing a video about security clearances in the army?
DJChrissyChris365 I got one for my job but wondering if it covers the armed forces
Most clearances are handled by a multitude of private or government agencies.
Oh damn I went through basic in 2007 and our phones got locked away with our personal stuff the whole time. We had to use calling cards and wait in line at pay phones. I feel old now. Cool to see they have changed those ancient ways!
At fort Jackson you keep.your phone at reception i went to basic there
I'm leaving to Ft. Leonard Wood Missouri June 23
But I like women😢
Thanks for the information. Looking to be enlisting into the Army in the next few months and ship.
why am I watching this I am going into computer science not the military
Well I majored in Computer Science so that might tell you something 🧐
Matt Ward I want to go into the USNA after I graduate high school (I’m a sophomore) but I am trans and there is a ban on transgender people going into the military/USNA I was just wondering if you have any advice i could use to try and serve and still be out as trans)
I have a CS degree and the job market isn’t as easy as they make it seem, especially with rona. Why am I watching this? Idk, plan B I guess.
Computer science major here as well.
Getting shipped in August. Really looking forward to it.
Leave for Fort. Benning tomorrow overly excited!! 😁
Good luck i just graduated osut 2 weeks ago. Just do what you’re told and youll be alright.
Dion Grindle SLEEP!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dion Grindle I'll see u there!
Graduated back in December. 19k. You'll love the chow there
skitboyz 09 yeah that's what I keep hearing! It's to bad I'll have little to no time to actually enjoy it though 😂
Bored in the hotel, shipping out tomorrow @ Ft. Leonardwood why not watch some more of Ward's videos? Lol. Seriously though, I've been watching the hell out of your videos and I've learned a ton and I gotta thank you for keeping it real with all the tips and information.
I would really rather not leave my phone with my family,so like do they just take it and store it with your civilian items till you graduate
That’s interesting in the Marines they don’t even allow that they make you ship it all home. I think this idea is better for all branches to store it in a room.
At Fort Sill for us they didn’t allow personal running shoes we had to get the ones at the PX
Shipping off today, wish me the best of luck 😅
Good luck you got this. Just have a positive mindset and do not give up.
or don't go to the military and just chill at home, but good luck regardless
Good luck!
Mugiwara Luffy Luck
Kitwerfil ! Why? Seems boring
at fort jackson you keep your phone in inception once you are in basic they take it, i got three personal calls in my bct
Fort Jackson keeps there phone thro Reception I’m here now
Yes Jackson you get to keep it up until about 2-3 days prior to your departure for actual basic combat training, I just graduated from Jackson 8 weeks ago
In the Navy we just ship everything back home.
I leave for ft Lenardwood on the 31 of August I'm so excited
Good luck bro i leave on September 20
Going this Sunday in San Diego💯
hey man, any updates to you?
Probably too late on this. But I went to Fort Jackson in 2016. You do indeed get to bring your phone. The day before you pleasently meet your drill sgts. They take your phone away and is given to your drill sgts for safe keeping.
I thought you weren’t allowed Personal medication in the military
My girlfriend went to Fort Jackson for basic training she did have her phone for abour 4 to 6 days I believe during reception. However there may have been a delay specific to that time resulting in having their phones longer
