  • The Tesla Model Y and Model 3 both have a flaw in their design that will destroy your paint. This known problem has been acknowledged by Tesla and a quick fix has been offered. That said, it is not free, and it does not fix the whole problem.
The Tesla Model 3 was the first high volume EV on the roads. After a few months of production, we started to see our first signs that there was an issue with the design of the car. The front wheels were throwing up rocks and salt on the rocker panel.
Over time, these impacts dont just chip away the paint, it can actually start to deteriorate the metal underneath. Originally Tesla had offered to install front mud flaps, but only in cold climates, and only if asked for. Later, Tesla started offering them for an additional cost only. Then finally Tesla began shipping cars with the mud flaps to certain regions.
The Tesla Model Y came out a couple years later, and not only did the issue with rocks and salt being kicked up exist here too, it was actually worse. The Model Y was designed with a plastic rocker panel to help with durability when exposed to rocks and salt. The problem is that the shape of the car means that there is nothing stopping these rocks from impacting 3/4 of the way up the rear door.
These constant impacts, and at high speed, chip away at the paint with ease. After a short period of time, it is common to have many paint chips on the rear doors. Tesla started to offer front mud flaps for the Model Y like they did for the Model 3, but they also started to ship small PPF covers for the lower corner of the rear doors.
This small PPF, combined with the small front mud flaps, would cover most situations. The problem is that it doesn't cover the whole area, nor does it look good. The mud flaps from Tesla are small, lack visual appeal and don't appear to be made for longevity.
2 years after installing a cheaper set of mud flaps on our 2021 Model Y, they are finally starting to fall apart, literally. The front 2 mud flaps on our Model Y are hanging on by a thread and will not last much longer. Although they weren't that expensive, and they did serve their purpose while in tact, they really didn't hold up all that great.
After searching for alternatives, I learned that Spigen makes mud flaps for the Model Y now. Having had experience with their products in the past, it made sense to go this route for the replacement. Spigen makes higher quality accessories for Tesla's and these mud flaps fit the bill.
Only marginally more than the cheap stuff on Amazon, the Spigen mud flaps come with a superior build, design and also a substantial hardware and tool package. The mud flaps actually come with more body clips than needed, a socket wrench for the rear mud flaps, and even a full metal screw driver style body clip removal tool. While I have seen accessories ship with supplemental tools, I have never seen them shipped with this level of tools before.
