Mr. Heimler, I wanted to take a second to say thank you. When I first started my AP world class, I was confused and stressed because I didn’t understand the content. Ever since I found your channel your videos have helped me understand and become confident in the class material. I have my AP world class midterm exam in a couple days, and have been using your videos and AP world review guide as a valuable study source. Thank you so much for your all your help this year!

    My Notes:
    4 MAIN causes:
Militarism- the belief that states should build up strong militaries and employ them aggressively to protect their own interests
    • Industrial manufacturing made it possible to produce military weapons at a faster pace (and those weapons were deadlier than before!)
    • Germany became unified in 1871, causing rapid industrialization (also better military)
o Germany had the most powerful military force in Europe in the early 20th century
    • France had a very weak military due to several internal problems
    • Britain had a great military just like Germany but….
o Their commitment to militarism drained their national resources faster than Germany
Alliances- 2 major alliances in Europe
    • Triple Alliance- Germany, Italy, Austro-Hungarian Empire, and a few others
    • Triple Entente- Britain, France, Russia, and a few others
    • These alliances were created in the interest of National Security or to isolate rival states
o These alliances devised a military mobilization plan just in case if a war actually starts
 Built thousands of miles of railroads-main vehicle to mobilize troops in war
 Created super precise time tables for railroad operation- meaning once mobilization had begun, it’s difficult to stop it
Imperialism- getting bigger and better Empires was how States achieved great power status, but it leads to competition and conflict
    • Germany wanted to enlarge its empire
o However there was very little territory that wasn’t colonized yet
 So European powers began to have conflicts
    • These conflicts also was one of the reasons for the alliance system
Nationalism- many nation states emphasize the glory and commonality of their own people while defining other nation states as enemy
    • Europeans embraced nationalistic messages through schools, military service, and mass media
o Convinced everyone that their national identities and loyalties were the most important thing and…
o also convinced them that their national identities were under threat from rival states
    • Nationalism made people think conflict had to be met with force instead of compromise
The Spark That Started It All…..
    • Gavrilo Princip (a Serbian nationalist) shot Archduke Franz Ferdinand of the Austro-Hungarian Empire over a regional conflict
o This should’ve been a small regional dispute
o However MAIN makes it into global war
 Nationalism caused the assassination in the first place, nationalism caused the Austrians to view it as an unconscionable act that demanded retaliation
 Serbia was allied with Russia and Austria Hungary was allied with Germany
 Russia was allied with Britain and France and Germany was allied with Italy
 Then the alliances started the process of mobilization which can’t be stopped
 States already have strong militaries ready for war
 And they were already on the verge of fighting because of conflicts due to imperialism
    • And now we have World War I!

I find that it helps to summarize each topic in your own words, after you absorb information or after it has been a while since you last saw it, challenge yourself to explain everything on a google doc or a piece of paper, and identify what you don't remember so that you can know it all. This way, you repeat the knowledge you already have so you won't forget and recuperate anything you lost. However it is important to have a good corpus of info to reference, like your notes from class, Heimler's (amazing) videos, or your textbook if you have one!
