You would have to understand more about this history between Japan and South Korea. I suggest perhaps reading up about the history between both countries, from both sides? There is a lot that has happened between both countries that has caused a lot of animosity and bitter feelings. I have to admit America hasn’t done a lot to help soothe tensions which I had hoped it would have done more to do so, acting more as peacekeeper, which it claims to be. I’m an American, but I’ve spent half my life in Japan. I speak Japanese and am learning Korean, currently. It’s fascinating how much history is seen in different views/perspectives from different countries and even the common citizens’ of that country. It’s the governments that write the textbooks that the people in these countries read, so keep that in mind when you think: “ahhh, all ____ in that country are sooooo racist and believe so much BS and hate people in _____ and believe _____!!!!” Often times they get fed a lot of crap. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve walked into classrooms in Japan here and had a: “What the WHAAAAAT” moment forgiving the US in one breath and saying the bombings were a sad and regrettable but unavoidable fate, but Korea was just a: “no big deal why so mad tho”?! Other textbooks/lessons I’ve seen were less harsh to Korea, so it really does depend on the teacher and school and so on, but I mean, really, it is kind of wild. The reason hanbok and what not would be seen as insensitive is that it’s…a reminder of Korea, reminders of the comfort women and Korean culture and so on. There is just sooooo much going on between Japan and Korea. Honestly I feel like they are frenemies.
