Hey everyone hope you enjoyed the reaction!! Sorry with this movie Warner brothers was really strict so I had to shorten it quite a bit with the songs and the length of the video. Hope you still enjoyed the reaction!!
This movie is so AWSOME!!! Incredible songs and an Amazing cast of actors. When I was at school we did the songs "I can hear the bells" Without Love" and "You can't stop the beat" in a pantomime and it was so much fun. I'm really happy you saw this and enjoyed it as much as I always do.
I hope you will watch my favorite musical at some point which is "Phantom of the Opera" If you do I recommend watching both the 2004 movie and the 25th anniversary DVD of the show at the London Royal Albert Hall.
Yes! Please watch The Phantom of the Opera 2004... the greatest musical ever made!
No apology is needed, your reaction was great as always! Thank you for the work you put into it!
Enjoyed this so much! Thank you for your reaction!
I love this musical so much. I love the 60's setting, it's message of equality, and "You Can't Stop The Beat" is still one of the best musical numbers of all time.
100% agree! Definitely my favorite number in the entire movie. 😍😍😍
Agreed. Best song in my opinion. 💕
I will literally listen to that song on repeat, but I remember when I sang that song in choir and it was hard to sing the words correctly because of how fast the song is.
@@samanthaschulte9928yeah, i believe the broadway cast said that it’s the hardest song to sing lol
In the actual stage production, Tracy is supposed to win. But I LOVE that Inez won in the movie. It was a great change that makes me cry every time. It makes so much more sense.
Same! Inez winning is more satisfying.
I didn't even know that. Not having Inez win feels like the whole point of the story would be lost. The movie improved it!
@@Me-wk3ix I didn’t know it until my brother was in a production and I almost screamed in the audience because I was so shocked. It just feels so wrong to not have Inez win.
To me it doesn't make sense though. It's unfair to the contestants who were actually in the running for it. I think Tracy should've won and then they announced they're integrated and the next year Inez should've won. But we would need a sequel for that, and we never had that so I get why they did it, but I don't prefer that ending. Though little Inez is definitely one of the best dancers there! lol.
@@killinglonliness88 I think Inez winning makes way makes sense. It's silly to just say "There's an asterisk in the contract that means anyone who dances is eligible," but at least it is explained. Why would the lead dancer have the power to just declare that the show is integrated now? That's not up to her. But when Inez won and became the lead dancer, the show was definitionally integrated.
Hairspray is such an underrated movie. I love the remake more than the original...
Also John Travolta was great as Tracy's mom.
This isn’t a remake. One is a musical. One is not. Both are awesome
Well yeah there is a musical but there's a 1988 version where Tracy's mother is played by a man it also has a lot of good songs and has different scenes but I also love this one more it's a perfect remake ❤
@@selyinsanitysin5095 All version has a male actor as Tracy's mom i think.
The original 1988 "Hairspray" was not a musical It did have music in it, but as a soundtrack; the actors didn't sing the songs.
A Baltimore drag queen by the name of Divine originated the role of Edna Turnblad, Tracy's mom (the original "Hairspray" was a John Waters film, and Divine was the lead in most of his films). Divine passed away about two weeks after the Baltimore premiere of the original film.
When stage productions of the 1988 film were developed, a tradition arose of always casting a biological male as Edna Turnblad; this was adopted for the later musical development of the stage play and continues to the present. RUclips even has videos of the musical presented in other countries and Edna is ALWAYS performed by a man. @@nicolaskaito4769
My favorite character is corny Collins played by James Marsden he consistently throughout the entire film through his celebrity pushes for integration there is a back down and he's a hundred percent ready to push the issue every time he has a chance to do so by sharing the spotlight with Queen Latifah
My second favorite character of James is Prince Edward in Enchanted.
@@truthseeker9249Yes! Love Enchanted ❤
Well I mean the real life person he was based on was the polar opposite of his stance on integration, but yeah
@@one-onessadhalf3393 really? Hmmm, because even in the first one, he was portrayed as being all for integration.
@@one-onessadhalf3393 I mean the one with Ricky Lake.
I ADORE _Hairspray._ Hell, I love a good movie musical. _Hairspray_ is no exception. The message about equality and inclusion still rings true. The song _I Know Where I’ve Been_ moved me to tears whether it’d be sung by Queen Latifah, Alex Newell, or Jennifer Hudson.
And fun fact: While Zac Efron was Link Larkin in the movie version, his _High School Musical_ co-star Corbin Bleu (Chad Danforth), was in the 2011 Hollywood Bowl production as Seaweed J. Stubbs.
Also, the guy playing Mr. Pinky (the owner of Hefty Hideaway) is Jerry Stiller, who played Tracy’s dad in the original 1988 movie, that inspired the Broadway musical and in-turn, this movie.
The equality and inclusion is actually especially well-done because it's not just about race. It's set against a time where segregation was still prevalent but was slowly fading. By making Tracy excluded due to her weight, we are able to recognize prejudices other than racism, many of which we still see.
My favorite version is the Jennifer Hudson version. Also, I LOVE Big Blonde and Beautiful, excellent song
Your reactions are so wholesome, your pure enjoyment for the parts you like and disgruntlement when you're upset. You have a phenomenally expressive face, and it makes your reactions so much fun to watch.
He's just such an emotional person and I love him for it.
@@truthseeker9249 Yes! It makes his reactions a very wholesome and positive experience!
8:22 "Why does she have to sound so good?" Because the bad guy has to have the best song, always! Velma Von Tussle is no exception. :)
Magnificent Michelle. Love her.
I wonder how many people realize that she’s the Michelle Pfeiffer that Bruno Mars sang about in Uptown Funk 😊
Even non-musical fans often love this movie. I don't know if I'd go so far as to say it surpassed the stage musical it was based on, but some parts probably were better. I think non-musical fans are won over by the story and message about inclusion and moving with the times. One musical reviewer called Velma "the mean girl all grown up", which is actually a great description of her. Michelle Pfeiffer killed the role.
Yep i agree with you as i am not a fan of musicals but seriously this movie was exceptional it was amazing from every aspect and every actor did their role very well and every song was so damn good like i enjoyed watching it more than some other non musical movies
John travolta as Edna was perfectly casted
LOVE this movie! When I was a manager at Family Video years ago I played this film every shift. Retail jobs are very stressful but it was utterly impossible to be in a bad mood when this movie was playing. I may or may not have been singing the songs as I put movie returns back on the shelves. LOL
The music from this movie is so good, I still have a fair bit of it on my playlist. I know it was a bit weird but I really love John Travolta as the mom as well. He got so into the role and it was really fun.
You've finally hit the big one! WOO!
Can you believe that Elijah (Seaweed) thought he couldn't keep up? He's the best!
Dude is one of the most talented performers in the world! He was also fantastic as the Scarecrow in The Wiz Live, Queen Latifah was also in it!
@@ifeelpretty5790 fantastic!
AHHHHHH!!!! I am sooo happy, Nick!! You don't know how much I love this movie and I am so happy you enjoyed it! And you being so happy adn amazed while watching, I have no words!! Thank you so much for reacting to this movie and again, I am so darn happy you enjoyed it!! ❤
I'm surprised you didn’t realize that was John Travolta playing Tracy’s mom in Hairspray. See the history regarding Hairspray is a little odd as it started as a low budget film from the late 80’s as a homage to the 60’s where drag queen Divine played the mom and then the movie became a hit broadway musical where the bearded brother from Mrs. Doubtfire (Harvey Firestein) played the mom and then became a movie again.
Sonny Bono played Amber’s dad in the original movie, Divine played Tracy’s mom.
@@ifeelpretty5790 Ah. My mistake. I only saw the film once and knew a guy played Tracey’s mom and thought it was him. Thanks for the correction.
this movie was filmed in my childhood neighbourhood, it was my FAVOURITE movie as a kid ahh! toronto has neighbourhoods that still look quite old so they just threw some 60s cars in there and that was that haha. costuming went CRAZY and everyyy song is great, genuinely saw it over 200 times😭 john travolta going from the bad boy in grease to an agoraphobic mother is WILDDD, both great musicals tho lol!
“Don’t be afraid of your body!” Nick, you’re just the sweetest!! 🙂
Fun fact- the female agent you see at the end of the movie is none other than the original Tracey Turnblack from the original movie (which came before the original Broadway show). Her name is Ricki Lake.
SO glad you loved it so much Nick! I loved watching your reaction!
Nikki is such a great singer, I don't know if you know, but she was a true unknown before she played Tracy in this film, they picked her for her gorgeous voice! I also love how much Zach Efron's voice has progressed since High School Musical
I love this movie. I’ve heard many people tell me it’s too girly and men shouldn’t watch it but screw that, I’m a grown 21 year old man and this movie is still very enjoyable even today for me!
Anyone who tries to tell you men shouldn't enjoy a piece of media (if that's a phrase) just because it's not 'manly' enough has too narrow an idea of what being a man means. I'm glad you don't share that attitude!
I am glad you have discovered your gender is not so delicate it might fall off if you admit you like a movie. Thank you for refusing to conform to someone's narrow definition of what a man should be.
This is one of the most pleasantly surprising films I saw in my teens. I remember being interested enough in it, but knowing nothing of the original film let alone the Broadway adaptation this is based on, I wasn't expecting more than just a fun movie. Did not expect a powerful anti-prejudice film. Also, is it just me or is Corny honestly one of the best characters in this film? I did not appreciate how likable he is until revisiting this film a few years ago.
I did love Zac Efron in this movie.
This is the second strangest cast I’ve ever seen in a musical that somehow still works. You’ve got Zach Efron, Amanda Bynes, Christopher Walken, John Travolta, and Queen Latifah.
The winner of weirdest cast will always be Repo! The Genetic Opera (which would make an interesting Halloween video. Paris Hilton, the girl from Spy Kids all grown up, and a litany of amazing opera singers.
I'm so glad in this movie they let Ina win instead of the obvious choice of Tracy. Absolutely loved it ❤
Seconds ago I was like "No way" and then I clicked this.
The ending song "You can't the beat" was nicknamed "You can't stop to breath", due it being very hard to sing, nevertheless while dancing. The only person who could sing it was Queen Latifah. When asked about it, she state that she was a rapper, so she didn't found the song that difficult.
Also, I don't know if ya spotted, but John Travolta was in this movie
I'm glad you are doing more video reactions. I read the description about your pest infestation. I had a problem with bedbugs last year and had to stop buying Blu Rays from Amazon for a whole month.
I was a big fan of the 80s movie version. Less musical by comparison. The lead from that movie, Ricki Lake, plays one of the judges/talent scouts dressed in black in the final scene. When I saw this one I fell in love with it. I’m not the biggest musical person but I love every song in this one.
Mr. Pinky was played Jerry Stiller who not only played Tracy’s dad in the 80s version but was also Ben Stiller’s dad in real life!
My favorite musical of all time! It never fails to brighten my day.
I remember this movie coming out on my 12th birthday. Loved it ever since. I think it’s incredibly underrated and is, in my opinion, the best version of Hairspray. The cast is perfect, and it ages VERY well.
Elijah Kelly’s voice took me to church everytime incredible voice loved seaweed!
Danny from Grease plays Tracy’s mom in this movie
I dragged my father to the theater to see this & he absolutely loved it!! Tracy/ Nikki Blonsky was phenomenal 🔥🎬💘
This came out when I was 12 or 13, and I saw it in theatres like 5 times. I got the soundtrack on cd, then put the songs on my ipod nano and listened to it at least once every day for months. Full of bangers, and even some bangers that were cut songs.
Your reactions are so pure and wonderful. Loved watching your face and the utter joy. Please turn up your volume cause it was sometimes hard to hear you, and I really wanted to. You are delightful to watch.
I remember seeing this in the movie theaters
Same! I saw it for Zac Efron, being a tween at the time 😂
@@ifeelpretty5790 Same. I loved him in High School Musical.
I’m so happy Nick is reviewing this! Seeing baby Efron reminds me of such simpler times 🥹 and he looks great with the black hair.
Idk what it is about Michelle Pfeiffer but she makes a great villian/antagonist: the racist elist white momager here, head queen evil witch in Stardust, Catwoman in Tim Burton’s Batman, Eris Goddess of Discord in Sinbad, the evil queen mother in Maleficent 2, femme fatale in Scarface, the leader of the mean girls in Grease 2, and this is all I can think of from the top of my head- there might be more!
Yay!!!!! This is probably one of my favorite musicals/movies of all time! I actually saw the off-Broadway production of Hairspray this summer and it is just a fantastic show. I'm so glad you enjoyed the movie!
I love the original 80s movie so much
Omg what an amazing surprise 😊 I love this movie the soundtrack is still on most of my playlists, I know musicals must be a pain for copyright reasons but there's so many more i'd love to see you react to
Hope your well ❤
True story: I dressed up as Tracy Turnblad for a movie-themed float in the 4th of July parade in Alameda, CA. I lipsynched to Good Morning, Baltimore. So much fun!
One of my favorite movies! Oh, thank you, Nick for just making my day. One of the best musicals of all time! 😍😍😍
One of my favorite movie musicals! It was a delight watching you react to it, thank you! If you enjoyed the 60s-styled music, you’ll probably enjoy Dreamgirls, it has an amazing cast with Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé, Eddie Murphy who was Oscar-nominated for it, and Jennifer Hudson who won the Oscar for it! Another great one is Chicago, Queen Latifah was in that one as well and even got Oscar-nominated for it (her co-star, Catherine Zeta-Jones, won in their category).

Hey Nick, so glad your channel is still alive or active 😊😊
God nick the way ya look at link then Tracie after her doing the punish move😂 😂
Wonderful reaction to this marvelous, exuberant musical. Great cast, terrific score and top of the line production. Thanks for reacting to this. Hope to see more musicals. Highly recommend the original 1961 West Side Story, directed by the same man who did The Sound of Music. It won 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
When the original film first came out, Tracy's mom was played by famous drag queen Divine.
In her honor, every adaptation has cast the role in drag.
Divine was in the original film (which was not a musical). Harvey Fierstein was the mom in the Broadway musical
Yaaay! Love this movie. ❤ Thank you for the reaction. Glad to see you back!! You were missed. ❤
For some reason, you haven't been on the RUclips algorythm radar lately. This video is a great reminder of why enjoy you so much!
Got my first kiss behind the theater after watching this movie. Tee hee.
Hairspray has a lot of fun songs. Very beautiful musical.
"Hairspray" was filmed before "Tangled", so the "mother knows best" line comes from "Hairspray".
I got to play Corny Collins in a skit my junior year of high school and was so excited. I love this movie so much! Great video!
Your genuine reaction made me so happy! Thank you!!! ❤❤
I haven't really seen Hairspray, the movie or stage musical, before. I always got the feeling that it's a fun, high-energy musical with poofy hair, though. So, I have a good feeling you'll really enjoy it, Nick!!
During the March scene that's my favorite song out of the whole movie.
My sister has actually done a musical based on Hairspray back when she was in seventh or eighth grade, I believe.
This musical has no song I dislike. Some i do prefer over others but as you said its like the Greatest Showman the songs are incredible.
5:18 Brittany Snow is really good, i loved her in John Tucker Must Die. Easily one of my favorite high school movies.
7:54 Michelle is an incredible singer. I love her Cool Rider song from Grease 2. And shes one of the best Catwoman.
Omg so man people watching Hairspray lately! I love that movie so freaking much!
And damn, you were so cute to watch react! Loved it all!!
This was so fun! Delightful movie with a delightful commentator. Thanks for sharing with us!
Oh this musical is a toe tapper be ready to randomly hum these tunes out of nowhere Nick!
not sure if you've seen it but I wanted to recommend the 1982 film The Last unicorn. its the most beautiful film I ever seen and the sountrack is amazing!
something i noticed about Amber: she didn't react to tracy saying she wanted every day to be negro day like her mother did, infact she didn't react at all until the mention of her winning instead was heard.
Hello, Nick So good to see you!
I watched the original 1989 version of Hairspray a few months ago and its both dark and hilarious!
John Travolta in drag!
Oh, brother! Lol!😂
I haven’t seen this movie in years since music class in high school
As a Marylander, this was so fun to see redone. John Waters films are so crazy.. hes a nut but a fun guy. Check out his other movies Cry Baby, Serial Mom, and original Hairspray with Ricki Lake as Tracy. All filmed here in Md.
A film that is well worth a watch and is now a famous musical is Kinky Boots (2005) - one of my favourites!
I love this musical. First time here and it was so fun to watch you react. 👍🏼👍🏼
I think you should check out the original Hairspray movie from 1988 as well. I like the musical version (this one) better, but seeing where it started is definitely worthwhile.
My favourite film musical! I still listen to the soundtrack! I Know Where I've Been is my favourite song!
"The enchanted guy"
He was also Cyclops in the X-men movies.
This is one of my favorite movies. The message is so beautiful!! I hope you love as much as I do!
I meant to comment when i saw you posted yesterday like 15 minutes after i got the notification 😅 this is one of my favorite movies and i watched it all the time once i got the DVD. Great reaction and im happy you enjoyed it! Aloha from Hawaii 🌺

Because of Amanda Bynes being in this movie she played as Penny, another good movie with her is. What a Girls wants and the other one Sydney white it was a fun movie.
Yay, I love this movie. It helped me out as when it released, it came out after my mum's funeral and was a big distraction for me. I'm glad you're getting around to watching it x
I think the original John Waters “Hairspray” would scare you lol and it’s VERY different from this version… I would love to see you react to that one and compare them
One of my favorite movies!!!!!!!!
I love watching your reactions! This movie is the best and it makes me so happy to watch you react to it for the first time! So cute 🥰
These songs get stuck in my head so often
Nick you have a great movie selection and like your show,
I’m still bummed that the movie doesn’t have the song “Mama I’m a Big Girl Now”
Yeah...they put it in the end credits.😢
Knew you would love this one! I saw this movie 3 times in the theater when it first came out, I loved it so much :)
Don’t know if anyone caught it but Enda saying learn how to get blood out of car upholstery is a pulp fiction reference.
@Dm_NickFlix01 I’m sorry you’re an orphan
The mom makes the film. John Travolta took a big chance to do that film in, basically, drag. But he made it work.
You should check out the original version of hairspray movie, but don’t forget Stuart little 2.
I hope Nick realised the mum is played by John travolta ahaha
