There really is no other synth like it!! (Apart from the CS2x lol) I had no idea when I bought it what a treasure I had n that I would still be playing it in 30 years time! The fact that I’ve had it for nearly 30 years says a lot doesn’t it ☺️😊
Not just out of the box. Most folks here on RUclips will take any synth and try to make whole ambient albums in a single preset. Seems to be the In Thing for the past decade or so. At this point, I'll take endless piano's and synth brasses, but they're actually kinda hard to find. Still don't know what the Kawai K4's factory presets sound like x3c
I was a teenager when my grandma bought this for me from a popular music store that no longer exists. Didn't fully appreciate it at the time-I only liked the arp and pads/celestial sounds back then. Found it in the attic and was going to sell it to buy a Roland synth instead. After this video though, I may just have to give it a second chance now....😊
Love my CSX1 had it from new underrated, has lots of sounds and possibilities patches are fat drums too use mine all the time Yamaha got it right with this one
Since I posted a comment on here a year ago, I have now got hold of one of these synths. Learning to program it is a breeze. So intuitive, and the matrix panel couldn't be simpler. The sounds you can coax out of this synth are beautiful. Glad I got one. It's a keeper for sure :)
See my post above with some tips! See's your not alone. Trust me there will be times you think "this is crap" just get through them and DONT sell the synth, just keep it. And play around and develop the sound because trust me, I bought it for the same exact reason and the quickness of programming is the exact reason why I got some sounds that I cannot ever forget, and because of them cannot sell that synth. In fact I bought another one. It's all about the emotion, once you 'got the sound don't sell it! Everyone wants 'more massive' but sometimes you get sick of the massive and want something simple. So if you get attached to certain sounds you've programmed (even if they are just a few, just a handful) think carefully about selling- I am sure pretty much everyone whose had a CS1x/2x has had thoughts about that. :) I love powerful synths but sometimes need a break & some simplicity. Sound good?
Got one of these myself here in Spain (Valencia) in late 2018, used, a wee bit travelled but still in good working order. Some very dreamy, spacey and inspirational sounds, love it.
I still have mine too, bought it in late 90s. It's been on a shelf for years now, one of the keys is broke. I came here to see if there's a tutorial how to fix it & sat listening to this. Very nice! I think now's a good time for me to learn to play it!
I had mine fixed... it was just a dirty contact. Easy to fix if you got the same Problem. Disassembly isn't complicated. The Rubberdome Bands are easy to clean with water and dish soap. Then clean the contact points on the boards with a Alcohol based Cleaner (Window cleaner)... let it sit for a day and enjoy your CS1x in its Paddy Creamy Glory! 🤘
Alesis Micro/Miniak can go into deep rave/trance/acid sound in a way no other synth I've heard can, including the AN1x which does not have anywhere near the number of different filters the micron has. I've explored the Micron/Miniak at light speed using an i-pad as a controller. When you dig deep you quickly realize it surpasses even the AN1x (which I had). The CS1/2x are best at wavering hazy (dreamy) mesmerizing pads meant to put you to sleep ir mesmerize you. Lowering the Vel Offset and Vel Depth is the secret to making it sound soft and cozy in a way no other synth can. It will never be considered amazing sounding of course but warmth is rare lke gold and hard to find but once you have it, is something you keep! Of course many people sell the CS1x which is understandable but extend the attack time and release time, and search around and you'll find some nuggets in there. :)
i read/saw/heard it is harder to program sounds on it, or that the An1x is better? But if I want more of that trance from 96 - 2000 which of these two would you get? An1x being a later release would probably not appear on as many classic records from that specific period which is important to me as that is the sound i like.
@@AnalogFlava Well. The CS1x was a good all rounder for people on a tight budget and in need of a substantial sound library, at a time before VSTi's. I used one live with an ARP Explorer 1 over 20 years ago, loved it, but sold it 2005. I'm now using my second one with a Behringer Odyssey. Brings back good memories
About to bid on this on ebay, saw it being used by a guy called Estuera who was making some late 90s trance on this and I was hooked!! I have newer equipment though hope I can hook this up to FL Studio and punt out something good!
I just discovered this synth on Bad Gear Review, like seriously, about 5 minutes ago. I'm quite taken, and dare I say blown away, by it's sound. I think I've found my desert island synth :__)
How big is your studio? I bought the CS1x when it was $700, and then bought the CS1x brand new. Thankfully I have both of them still, but it's only because I discovered sounds that are not on my other synths (GAS relieved - somewhat!) :> I'm glad you are so honest, I'm willing to share sysex because of it. Honesty and humility (humbleness) are dying out, and anyone willing to ask... I just wish everything lost could be found again. What kind of sounds are you developing / are into? I know the CS1x as good as the Korg 05RW and they both can do 'their' thing whatever that is :) but you already know that I'm sure!
Sorry, GOOF! Ok, I bought the CS1x for $700 and then the CS2x when it came out, A huge amount of $ that seriously I regretted (especially working at the post office part time - mail carrier) but now I don't, and am thankful actually. Because of all my work, I now have all the sounds designed over 20 years ago. On a 3V coin battery that was never replaced. haha although I did save my sysex at least once thankfully!!!!!!!
@@mark12011972 I don't really have a studio, I just have a double keyboard stand, where the CS1x rests with other synth. For making music I just use the other synth and a computer. I bought the CS1x in used condition for 180€, but it's without any flaws and works perfectly. Mine is from 1997 and I'm using it whether for making new sounds or as secondary keyboard for playing. Although it's digital, it's capable of making pretty nice and clean analogue sounds, which is something I really appreciate.
Simple! Sounds like you can really focus & develop it's potential! Just like I had. That's all I had, just the CS1x and 1 other sound module. So of course I put all my effort into it (back in the 90s) and to this day I still have sounds that sound GREAT. Especially through headphones. @@mark12011972 Yeah, at first, I thought "hmm, this will sound more like majority of 90's synthesiser, but let's just use it anyway." But then I realized, that the capability of making nice analogue sounds it's not what I thought. It was more than a regular 90's synthesiser, which can make a lot of interesting sounds and they can be used for any electronic music genre ever existing. So I use it mainly for making new sounds for my songs or just some, they can be used later. For a 1997 synth it's great for sound design.
Still have mine. It was strange, mine was a floor demo and there was an awesome patch with my first name as the patch name. I figured it was a sign so I bought it. Still use it. I loved this board because at times it had the ability to create very PPG Wave-esque sounds.
Ha ha, talking about signs: Been listening to Yamaha TG77 patches on RUclips and it sounds superb, went wild and purchased 3 banks of custom sounds even tho I don't have one! Then my cell phone buzzed, I looked and time was 12:34 (1234)...no important stuff, went to PC and see a video on the play list has 1234 views, the Patch demoed was called "The Great Spirit" and in the description I read "the name comes from the native American's name for the Creator" :)
This model could so easily have been my first synthesizer in February 1997. The fact that it only had 10 notes of polyphony would not have bothered me, if I liked the internal engine better than the one I ended up choosing, the QS6 from Alesis. I only chose that one, because it was the only performance synthesizer recommended to me at that time which cost less than $1,000 USD before tax. I should’ve been willing to think a little bigger, since somebody else in my family paid for it.
Beautiful - I picked up one of these just yesterday in need of repair (LCD missing some segments, and 8 or 9 keys not working) LCD is now fixed, and the keys just needed cleaning. Time to play!
I have had mine since it was released and was stored for almost 20 years - have returned to music as an old man and 4 notes around middle C are buggered a bit but I keep playing them and its as if they are coming back to life :-) Not perfect but usable! Great synth and my son has just picked one up too :-)
These are stunning! But to everyone asking for the patches, just listen carefully. You can pick out a lot of the base sounds and they're not as far away from many of the presets as you'd think. What he's done is strip out all the tacky arpeggiators, possibly some of the chorusing in several cases, and then rethink and amp up the reverb and delays. I'd love it if he'd post them (and he may have, I've not searched every comment!) but I reckon if you have one and you took an hour, chose one or two of your favourites and worked to emulate them you could do it, and once you've done that I'm pretty sure you'll get the underlying principle so you can go create your own, which is even better! And if it weren't 1am, that's precisely what I'd be doing right now!! XD
Wow! That's a sad sign of the internet today. I'm not trolling, quite the opposite! I wasn't trying to accuse you of anything other than being really good at using the cs1x and I just wanted to let people know how I think you managed to make it do that, so that more people can get more life out of their big blue beats!! Sorry it bothered you - I can't even work out what made you think that was an attack/troll?!
Just bought one, crossed off my shopping list at last. What an excellent demo. Yet another underrated synth, overshadowed by the big boys. Look at Casio for instance, People were put off by the Casio name because it was so cheap, but many of the same people are kicking themselves now. At the end of the day, it's not so much the synth, but the person who uses it to bring the best out and programme it.
You will go through times where you think "this is crap!". You will create sounds that you think are good, and then think crap! And then improve on them... and they stay. Start with the presets, turn the volume down on all layers except one and then experiment. Get what you want, maybe increase the release, play with the LFO Speed. When you break through (and you will) then turn the volume up on the other layers and do the same, and get the Cho Send to jive with the effects. Good Luck and Enjoy! I'm glad I never sold it because there were times when I realized the cheeziness and the weakness but thats its power. It fills the space (and beautifully once they get there) but allows other more powerful synths to layer over it! :) It provides my relaxing mesmerizing totally hypnotic pads (I just can't get from my AN1x or Ensoniq VFX in all their beautiful power!!! ). It also has some unpredictable lovable wonderful distortion rhythm lead sounds but you need a combination of luck, time, and persistence to pull it out. :)
I've had the Cs1x for 20 years and I almost sold it yesterday before watching your video. Now I've confirmed it's a keeper. Good job! You make it sound so good. What recording equipment/software are you using?
Don't sell it. I just purchased a Roland DS61 to replace my Yamaha CS1x and I am still using the CS1x. I also put them side by side and there' not much difference in the sounds.
This is a really good demo, thank you SO MUCH for putting this together, i found one of these noodling around ebay & had a good feeling about it, now i know i need one :) can anybody recommend this vs the cs2x? Which is better for inspirational eighties vibe sounds?
I've been listening to demos for both the CS1x and the CS2x, and to my ears, the CS1x sounds more organic and warm. I know the CS2x has more controller knobs, but is it worth it, when the CS1x sounds better? I'd love to hear what you guys think. Thanks.
Thanks for letting me know about the filters. I suppose that's just a downfall of synths with lower price points. Higher resolution filters cost more. One of the great things about the CS** keyboards was their lower price points. Sometimes you can mask the filter stepping with effects or LFO movements to some extent. Also, if you modulate the filter in time with the music, the stepping becomes a rhythmic element. I guess it depends on your needs. My music tends to by rhythmically busy, so filter stepping wouldn't really be noticed by the average listener. Thanks again for sharing. Take care friend!!!
the envelopes and LFOs on the CS1x aren't bad - it is just, like a lot of other digital synths at the time the realtime controls. Has a lot to do with the resolution that the signals get picked up from the encoders. think of the slope as a staircase, the better tech got, the more steps could fit in the space making a more accurate shape as it bends... it is still a totally usable synth but if you tweak that cutoff it shows it's age. Personally the things that I love about the CS1x that have deterred me from getting rid of it are the effects, especially the distortion/ amp sims and it is realy fun to make drum patches on it where you set up arps+effects to play the drums
I sold mine to get the yam CS2X...is basically the same...it has just a bit of more features...the only thing i found is that factory patches coming from the cs1x sound warmer..I used midi quest to transfered the patches from the cs1x to the cs2x...adn again is what you do with it...
Love your work! Because of you I bought a cs1x. I think it's such an underrated machine and its sad its not as popular... Will you make a set of custom patches for this? I was gonna buy the patches for the dx21 and id give a pretty fat tip for some new custom patches on this! Cheers! - Amiri
Thanks for your great video. I’m planning on digging my CS1X back out and giving it another go! Can you let me know if the sound at 1:00 is a preset patch or something you programmed yourself? Really love that sound.
Im no keyboard player but i am obsessed with 80s synths. Found a dude selling one of these for 35 quid so hopefully i can snag it up. I think I remember these being at my music college back in 2008 . Cant wait to make terminator and john carpenter vibes on it
ive had one of these since late 90s bought brand new but never played any of the sounds i just used it to controll my JV1080 wich i fell in love with building sounds on so easy after a long time at mastering it....but i could never figure out how to opperate this synth, i have a Waldorf blofeld unused still in box, and i have a korg minilougue , do you think its worth mastering the CS1x and selling the waldorf or vice versa....as i want money for a Moog sub 37.....im a sample guy , a mpc head and s950 user but want to start playing keys on some funky dirty techno with a souljazz feel DETROIT style to it (like MOODYMAN and Jimmy Edgar) ...why is this synth worth keeping??
Is it worth the space..Just sampling the best patches with the best configuartion could be a good compromise. If I had a big room for music I'd keep it for sure.
Great demo and awesome sounds. Question, do the CS1x presets play and load up on a CS2x unit? Thank you very much. Love the channel and vid performances.
I was just reading some reviews on this and from what i read you can load cs1x sounds into the cs2x. Idk personally but about 2 or 3 different reviews says yes it can be done. Its always worth a try. Im about to buy a cs2x and try it myself. Maybe we'll get lucky!!!!

@@jbr9719 Hey, thanks for that message, I did find a specialist technician here that other musicians use and swear by, I waited 5 weeks for it to be repaired as he struggled to find the fault. Then he reckoned it was fine, I happily paid €125 but the same issue came up again. It seems to settle down a bit if left switched on for a while, but the same fault makes it unplayable when first switched on, even after 15 mins it still cuts out! For now it's stashed in a cupboard again, I'll stick with my new Roland FP90 and MicroKorg for now.

Just tweak it a bit and it's one of the best synths ever
this one is so great! never heard of it until today!
rerelease!
Great demo and sounds
it sounds like david lynch's hairstyle
XD
These are original cs1x parches ! Tweaked a bit.
@@drumdmc sorry just the wording used and reading it @ 6.30 in the morning might have sounded harsher then it is. :)
Really cool patches - well done. Shows what a bargain these (and the CS2x) are.
I created a lot of good pad and atmospheric sounds with it.
Wow, the patch at 6:30 is really warm and inspiring :-)
Awesome Synth! The Sound ist really Great!
Thank you Mark. i have always said, It's not always the Synth, but the petrson using it, to bring the best out of it. take care. best wishes. moog.
Would you consider making these patches available as sysex?
Just got one of these can’t wait to find out how to make these sounds
I've had the Cs1x for 20 years and I almost sold it yesterday before watching your video. Now I've confirmed it's a keeper. Good job! You make it sound so good. What recording equipment/software are you using?
thanks
You bet. What recording equipment do you use?
Don't sell it. I just purchased a Roland DS61 to replace my Yamaha CS1x and I am still using the CS1x. I also put them side by side and there' not much difference in the sounds.
You lucked out. Keep making TV stuff with CS1x!!! Introduce the world- to what it lost!!
I used to have one of these, and it got broken.. man I loved it. Looking to get another
1.50 terminator ❤️
Dude this thing is sick i want one!
I have one now
Good timing, thanks :)
*fantastic sounds!!😎👍👍👍👍😳AMAZING!!*
Wow this is a nice sounding cheap synth, might have to get one. Thanks for the demo!
7:51+ Heavenly.
YOU PLAY LIKE A PRO!
Thanks for the Video! I have the Option to buy a CS1x and i hope it is working fine. This machine sounds really awesome.
Thanks.
demofactory i agree i had both and had the same feeling
well owning a cs1x.... if the filter on the 2x is as steppy - I don't care so much about knobs.
I sold mine to get the yam CS2X...is basically the same...it has just a bit of more features...the only thing i found is that factory patches coming from the cs1x sound warmer..I used midi quest to transfered the patches from the cs1x to the cs2x...adn again is what you do with it...
excelente música...! felicitaciones.
Excellent!
Great sounds.
Hello! How do you make these custom patches, they are amazing!
Not too detailed, just wavy. Hence mesmerize.
Love your work! Because of you I bought a cs1x. I think it's such an underrated machine and its sad its not as popular... Will you make a set of custom patches for this? I was gonna buy the patches for the dx21 and id give a pretty fat tip for some new custom patches on this!
Cheers!
- Amiri
Impressive sounds! Are these the stock patches or you made them yourself?
Are these custom patches?? And if they are, could I buy them off of you?
Lovely.
Que buen demo
Awsome demo. It's a factory sounds or your custom ?
Nice demo! :-)))
Fantastish!!!!
Stunning work! I had no idea this synth could sound so beautiful! Are you using outboard effects in this demo, or is 100% CS1x?
Nismology5 Thanks, only internal efx used !
great sound!! this is a factory sounds??
7:52 Holy sweet
I also have this wonderful synthesizer, but I have to learn to understand all its potential,... ;)
4:07 could anyone help me understand how I could get this sound please ?
I had a CS2x, and it didn't sound anywhere near as good or warm as this. I want a CS1x so much!!!!!!
I loaded these patches in the Cs2x back in the day and it sounded far worse so i agree with your point .
i would love one of these or a CS2x
7:57 almost made me buy one.
youd be lucky to find one
4:51 min...sounds like "Universe" from the Korg M1 😋
La gente esta loca con los gigas y gigas de sonido, mirad lo que hace con solo 4Mb de sonido!!!
is it possible to set the pitchbend, +2 up and 12 down?
Sadly you can only set an amount for both up and down
Thanks for your great video.
Cant wait to make terminator and john carpenter vibes on it
This is a 90's synth
@@rogerp.4489 I’ve definitely heard some of those tones in 80s music
@@Glamosapien twas made in 96
@@rogerp.4489 the keyboards itself was not the synth tones xD hence my comment
@@Glamosapien you said synths as in the context of E. keyboard/Synthesizer. Theyre interchangable. So you just made an oopsie with your writing.
Seen one of these on market place for came to check it out. I may just check it out😁😁
1:50 Terminator 2 theme sound :O)
Is this the Factory patches or customs ? Love each of these preset 🥰
very good delay! :-)
ive had one of these since late 90s bought brand new but never played any of the sounds i just used it to controll my JV1080 wich i fell in love with building sounds on so easy after a long time at mastering it....but i could never figure out how to opperate this synth, i have a Waldorf blofeld unused still in box, and i have a korg minilougue , do you think its worth mastering the CS1x and selling the waldorf or vice versa....as i want money for a Moog sub 37.....im a sample guy , a mpc head and s950 user but want to start playing keys on some funky dirty techno with a souljazz feel DETROIT style to it (like MOODYMAN and Jimmy Edgar) ...why is this synth worth keeping??
Is it worth the space..Just sampling the best patches with the best configuartion could be a good compromise. If I had a big room for music I'd keep it for sure.
🔥
Pls can u explain how do you connect the CS1x to the Computer so i can record it to Audacity?
You just need to buy a usb audio card like focusrite for ex.
AN1x looks almost the same, but it is much better (IMO)
Agree on the AN1x being better, but the CS1x complements it well.
disagree..i have owned both
Who can gift me this!!!
Can’t wait to have a feel of this!🥰😅🤗
i have this thing i jam on it for hours
Because it's not so damn perfect! :)
Same - the drum arpeggiator is wicked
Can't help but wonder, is he playing through an effects unit or are the effects coming from the synth.. every preset seems to have delay and reverb..
Great demo and awesome sounds. Question, do the CS1x presets play and load up on a CS2x unit? Thank you very much. Love the channel and vid performances.
no.....not compatible
I was just reading some reviews on this and from what i read you can load cs1x sounds into the cs2x. Idk personally but about 2 or 3 different reviews says yes it can be done. Its always worth a try. Im about to buy a cs2x and try it myself. Maybe we'll get lucky!!!!
Merci !...
Merci d'avance.

Thank you! ... Not to speak, and let us hear the "possibilities" of the CS1X.
Not all, I guess ...
I played guitar until about 12 years old. Then I fell in love with the bass! At one point ... My equipment ! Alembic (× 3), Travees Bean, Fender Precision fretless, and a French luthier, from Paris, for an acoustic. And a double bass.
I've been playing bass for 45 years now ...
I just cheated my bass twice:
I bought, used but niquel a Yamaha PS6100, 1984, 61 keys and lots of "gadgets", but a lot of nice ...
If you have time, please give me a review.
And I bought, still second-hand but nickel, an electronic drum kit, "McCrypt-DD-305".
Enough to make a "group" for me alone (I have enough to record one or more basses, and then let off steam, from low to high pitch, solo: Travis-Bean piccolo, and 5 special strings high).
And I want to make myself My group !
With me... and me... and me...
If you have a short time tell me if this Yamaha PAS6100 synth is ... crap, or worth it.
Thank you in advance.
Eric.
1.47 reminds me of terminator
I purchased a Cd Rom of extra patches. Would anyone help me to tell how I can convert those patches from my cpu onto the keyboard? Thanks
Look up sysex transfer, pretty basic stuff but you need an interface
Wow! What a synth! Nice demo btw, thanks a lot! Does it have an arpeggiator?
Yep
Yes but sadly doesn't transmit over midi. That was my only gripe about it when i had mine.
Well…I bought one on eBay a few minutes ago. For 260,00 € incl. shipping… 😎👍
Is it still available in the market??
Bought a used one a few months ago, needs some repair work, sound cuts out when holding down notes or chords occasionally. Fabulous sounds though.
I feel Street hawk
