Thank you Dave. So far I've been trying to find the best way to do chimarrao and this is the most comprehensive tutorial so far. Bought my first bag of meta mate erva week ago and it's been a bit of a learning process to find a consistent technique for chimarrao.
Glad to see you diving into the erva!
I've been trying with several methods for drinking Mate (I drink with Uruguayan Yerba Mate) and this method of preparing and drinking is way more practical than the ones from Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.
id love seeing this more zoomed out, i bet there loads if intresting stuff going on in that store!
That was fast! Awesome!
Yes!!! My favorite yerba mate channel on youtube! And jesus man ive been struggling with making chimarrao and have a giant kilo of it just sitting in my cabnet because it keeps clogging my bombitia
Wolfgang Lizana Hope this video helps! :)
Hey there! When I started drinking chimarrão I had the same problem. As a brazilian mate drinker I can say that's probably happening because of high temperature of water. It's recommended to pour moderate warm water (about 30 or 40 degrees celsius) the first time and let it sit for a few minutes so the erva absorbs that water. As for the temperature of the water for the mate you'll drink afterwards it should be around 73 degrees celsius, that is when you see the first medium size bubbles in the kettle. I find uruguayan mate easier to make (to cevar) since it doesn't clog the bomba (bombilla) like chimarrão regardless of the temperature. Saúde! Cheers!
I feel like an idiot, I have the same problem. I have a kg bag, and because I live in the far north in a remote town of canada, Amazon is my only access to this stuff. I found my bombilla was to small, so I ordered a one similar to the one in this video, and tried the methods involved in this video and viola! It's working for me!
I’ve been drinking Mate for many years but only just got round to buying my first Chimarrao. Total disaster!
I was so looking forward to it. I opened the bag and the smell was just amazing and the colour is so vibrant too (don’t spill it whatever you do though) but then it all went down hill. Had a proper bomba but not Cuia, so used a large mug of a similar shape. Thought I had done everything right but Bomba clogged and too be honest it had very little taste. Tried again, same result.
So, thanks for this vid. I will follow the instructions and hopefully have better results this time.
How did it go? My bomba keeps getting clogged.
In order to prevent the bomba from clogging when preparing mate (before any cycles occur) a critical step is to wait at least 10 minutes after you pour in the dummy water, the main problem with this type of Erva Mate is that it's very VERY dusty because of the grind that it goes through, and it takes a long time for the dummy water to "seal" the mountain in the Cuia, my best advice is to pour the dummy water while you boil your water. By the time the water reached the desirable temperature, the dummy water should've made its work.
Also tuck the base of your thumb on the opening of the bomba as you insert it inside the Cuia and pushing it below the Erva Mate. That way the air pressure in the bomba will push away any incoming particles and won't get inside of the bomba, it's a good technique until you learn how pull a proper "montaña" which won't require to do such thing.
You can also shake the Cuia with Erva Mate when it's upside down so the Brazil nut effect takes place in the herbs, this way the finer bits of the herbs stay on the top while the coarser ones stay on the bottom, make sure to not shake it too much, or else the Erva Mate won't be able to build a solid wall when you wait for the cold/room temp water to do it's job.
What I also do when it's clogged nmright in the middle of a cycle, is tap the base of the Cuia (Or whatever you use for drinking mate) with the tip of your fingernails or lightly flicking it. It will unclog the bomba partially, then once you finish the cycle, make sure to pour the water on top of the shaft of the bomba for like 1 or 2 seconds, and then into the hole.
@@alanleonel95 Thanks for this, I tried it, and pouring the water into the shaft of the bomba helped a lot! I can finally enjoy my 1 kg bag of Chimarrao :D
nice
Gourd and bombillo and or.
Is it expected to drink that small grindy Yerba?
Hi all,
I've just started looking in to yerba mate and am interested in getting started. I live in UK.
I have watched videos on how to prepare, but I have a question for afterwards.
Say you have used up all the mate water in the flask and you don't want any more. Can you leave the gourd overnight or for a couple of days and then go back to it? If so, how would you store it? Would you need to put cool water in again before more mate water? Sorry if it seems a stupid question, like I said - I'm new! 😅
If anyone could help I'd appreciate it.
James
Fill it with water and put it in the fridge? Cold brew?
I really wouldn't recommend leaving it overnight.
Is it common that people get a upset stomach from drinking yerba mate? I do and its the same with coffee...
Not common, but can happen with certain people. Try another brand.
Try a low polvo brand like playadito or mananita
