Sir Greil vs The Black Knight, but he uses his 'proper weapon' - Fire Emblem Path of Radiance

    The debugging map in Path of Radiance has both Greil and the Black Knight on opposing sides, allowing this fight to take place with minimal modding. By default, this version of Greil comes with the Reinforce skill (disabled prior to Tanith's recruitment in Chapter 18), but I swapped this out for Aether. Unlike Ike's Lord class, Greil's Hero class performs separate Aether animations for the Sol and Luna hits, resulting in the strange back-to-back attacks seen in the video. Greil's level has also been increased to 20, and his stats have scaled accordingly:
    HP 60 | Str 26 | Mag 10 | Skl 27 | Spd 28 | Lck 20 | Def 24 | Res 22
    The Black Knight's stats were inflated as well, but I reduced these back to their in-game levels to make for a more interesting fight:
    HP 60 | Str 30 | Mag 17 | Skl 30 | Spd 27 | Lck 11 | Def 30 | Res 22

    Would've been sick seeing Greil wield Ragnell. Though who knows how well he'd have been able to wield it since the tendons in his sword hand were sliced, so he would've needed to use his other hand or two-hand it.
    Had his tendons not been sliced though, he would've diced up the BK relatively easily.

    • @bobowon5450

      @AmirPrinceling 4 месяца назад +47

      @bobowon5450 Well he could technically use swords, he just wouldn't be as able to put as much strength into his swings as he could in the past. He's stronger with Urvan than he is with a standard sword because can two-hand Urvan. He's still able to utilize swords, just less proficient due to his sliced tendons. Which is why, according to in-game data, he has an S in Axes and an A in Swords (despite being a renowned swordsman in the past) which reflects how he crippled himself to relying on his two-handed axe.

      @@AmirPrinceling If Ike can two hand the ragnell so could he but Greil I assume used a hand handed stance since the two people he trained do so two handing it likely would mean he'd still have no where near the power he used to have since his off hand likely wouldn't be that developed not to mention he wouldn't be used to two handing sword and likely lacked the skill he had when one handing as a result.

    • @AmirPrinceling
      @AmirPrinceling 4 месяца назад +8

      @Koppu1doragon Exactly yeah. In all the art we've seen of Greil when he was young, he one-handed his sword. He'd still be good if he two-handed a sword, but as you said, he wouldn't be as good as he was at his peak, would be more limited. Since his whole style relied on just one-hand.

    • @plasticold2167
      @plasticold2167 4 месяца назад +1

      Greil outright didn't want to wield swords in battle ever again. That's why he slashed his tendons. He was too skilled with a sword. When he grabbed the medallion he slaughtered his entire batallion, presumably full of skilled, handpicked veterans. It was because he was so good with it that Elena ended up dead.
      Training his off-hand or two-handing it were not options in his mind, because he would never use a sword to fight again, just to train Ike. Even if he's skilled with Urvan, he will never be as skilled as he was before. Should he grab the medallion again, he will be easier to bring down. That's his bottom line in that aspect.

    Lotta folks in the comments bringing up how Greil cut some of tendons acting like he wasn't training Ike in swordfighting anyway for many years. He did that to try and weaken himself enough for Volke to kill him if he ever went berserk again, and even THEN Volke wasn't feeling confident. Greil has a legit chance to beat Black Knight with Ragnell (and Aether) as much as Ike does, folks.

      @@Jotari What I mean is that by all accounts he would be as skilled as Ike in lore at _worst._ But yes, if you can Debug/Hack the game, he WILL get the version of Aether seen in this video where Sol and Luna proc as separate hits instead of both right away.
      Should be worth noting that by checking his actual stats, he was Lv10, meaning he legit still had room to grow with unused yet decently competent growth-rates, unlike many characters like that; Some of his stats would cap quicker while others slower than Ike's on the same levels even. There was a very real shot at taking on Black Knight _legit_ as he comes.

    • @Jotari
      @Jotari 4 месяца назад +4

      @@MrMarket1987I would not say that by all accounts he would be as skilled as Ike at worst. The first question that needs to be asked for that is "which Ike". Because Radiant Dawn says Ike reached Greil in his prime by the end of that game. So tendon cut Greil would be significantly weaker than that Ike. And if it's end game Path of Radiance Ike, then bear in mind The Black Knight let Ike win that fight precisely because Greil had cut his tendons and wasn't as skilled as he should be (or in Japanese some warp powder nonsense). So if tendon cut Greil is on par with Lord Ike then the Black Knight could probably beat him relatively easily even with Ragnell. And let's not pretend that Urvan is some crappy iron axe either. It's a really, really good weapon, better than Ragnell in many situations. That weapon triangle disadvantage isn't going to hurt much with such high accuracy. Ragnell has the range and the ability to actually cut through the armour, of course, but the Black Knight wasn't attacking at range and it's not like Greil got a solid hit in that the Black Knight needed to use his armour to tank. Sword or axe, the Black Knight beat Greil because Greil was older and with an intentional handicap. Ragnell would have helped him marginally at best.
