Jai-Alai is pronounced Hi Lie.
I miss the Tampa. fronton!
No it isn’t, it’s pronounced “Johnny Knoxville”
At least that’s what I immediately associate the sport with, Knoxville signing up to be blasted full speed against the wall
Not only that, but architect Hilario Candela’s name is pronounced Can Day La. As a boy in the 1970’s, Mr Candela was my neighbor. He and his family were very kind and humble! He passed away last year from complications due to Covid-19. May he rest in peace.
I had a laugh of that, too. 😂
It's Jye-Alye when you first see it for sure. It's cool, my GPS mispronounces many places in NJ. Like Fork-ED River vs. Forked.....NYC get "Hyoos-ton St." for what is called HOUSE-ton(though spelled Houston. Milford, CY had Jai Alai back when as well.
There is another place in Jacksonville Florida off of the Arlington expressway that should have been mentioned. It’s called the Bethelite Hotel and Conference center
The dome houses was so cool my cousins have jet skies and a house in marco island and we would always take them over there and do over night challanges at that place
Grew up in Orlando. River County was a fun place to go. They also started to lose business when Wet N Wild opened (not sure if that is still there these days) on International Drive which is off Disney property. To the terrible robo-narrator...Jai Alai is pronounced as "Hi-Lie"
Wet N Wild closed and demolished. I can’t remember what was built there, but I think the land is Universal’s.
And THANK YOU; the narrator and the pronunciation of “Hi-Lie” drove me crazy!
@@rahs5801 yes universal owns it and is NOW a resort. Universal’s Endless Summer Resort - Surfside Inn and Suites
I miss Wet N Wild abs River Country. Unfortunately more modern Water Parks were taking over
@@rahs5801 universal studios water park
As far as how Jai-Alai is pronounced, I used to hear ads for it on the radio constantly in Florida. It always sounded to me like it was pronounced "Hi-Alie". The A was soft, but it was in there.
@5:58 I spent 11 months 3week 11hours and 21minutes at Arthur G Dozier (actually got my GED there) in 1984-1985
The only good thing is that it is permanently closed. May you find peace sir. Karma will take care of the rest.
SO MUCH OPEN SPACE WAITING TO HAPPEN!! Give Florida some breathing space after all the sprawl. Not to mention natural eco-systems!!
Harder Hall is undergoing renovations again and it seems really promising. My dad used to sneak in there on Halloween as a teenager, and my grandmother was there when they shut the doors the last time.
I really hope that's true. Spent my summers and winters here from ages 13 thru 17. Was my uncles hotel. He was one of the owners. Never met any of the other owners I don't belive so as far as I was concerned, he and aunt Eva were the owners, lol. I used to run the ski boat and take guests skiing when I turned 16. I guess it was a way to pay for my room & board when I visited. My uncle also had me run the audio/video equipment which basically was comprised of a VCR and tube monitor mounted inside of a Lil Red Wagon that was attached to a Sony movie camera, (Not VCR capable yet) mounted on a tripod so when a guest hires one of our pros for a private lesson, I can film it then replay the swing for the pro to analyze with the guest. Was truly ingenious that my uncle had the foresight to do that. Anyway, hope she sees a new life. She certainly deserves it. Also, beware of that circular staircase next to the dining hall. Weird crap happens there...
Dome houses are now under water. Ian sent them down. Guess now it can be a dive site
Imagine in 100 years. Ian was good for something I guess
@@corradocampo it certainly depends on the perspective but I would think even the most negative can one day be a positive. People forget relatively quickly though, Ian made us forget Irma and some other bitch is gonna come along that helps us forget Ian (some more than others of course). If I was on Ft Myers beach I’d expect my views on this to be different. I do have friends and family that their lives have been changed, and I hope they find happiness at some point in the future. Doing everything we can for them.
@@Adam-ze1jw yeah I live in ormond beach but I’m far enough inland we just got debris but you walk a couple blocks to the beach and it still looks like a war zone shits so sad. I’ll tell you what tho it’ll take a lot of hurricanes for me to forget hurricane wilma when I lived outside Miami. We didn’t have power for two weeks no school for a month. I was young but I vividly remember the lock to our slider breaking the wind was so strong, and my poor mom and dad taking turns holding it shut so debris wasn’t flying into the house or wind sucking us out. Was literally the only opening to the outside world we didn’t hurricane proof just in case. Mother Nature is a bitch man
@@corradocampo that it is. I remember Wilma, think that was same year as Charlie or year after? I’m over in Naples/Ft Myers area. I moved to florida 3 months before Charlie, and was welcomed and baptized by hurricanes that year as it seemed like one after the other. They ain’t no joke but I still will live here, just May have to deal with some shit every now and again. The loss of power is brutal. Our longest was 13 days with Irma. Sucked.
I live on Marco Island in the sixties, it was great place back then, we rode dirt bikes all over that place
I miss the Dome houses. They were a great place to visit and enjoy the beach around.
I would like to have seen it. 😢
You should also look into the former Belleview Biltmore Hotel in Clearwater. At the time it was the largest wooden structure in the world and over 300,000 ft.² it was torn down just a few years ago.
I lived in Clearwater and it was a beautiful place.
My friends and I used to go to the marina house 20 years ago ,we used to trespass there and take trips ,and it was creepy as fuck ,one night we heard the sound of an announcement and we all.ran the fuck out of there with the quickness lol
I've been in the ambassador hotel back in 2017! That place was full of graffiti, mold, and more than likely haunted. We were strapped to say the least, anybody or anything could have been in there. Nice view from the roof though.
Hurricane Ian destroyed the rest of the dome house. Last I saw it was all under water.
Some of it looks like through time it might get above water, I saw it recently and the tops look visible.
@@frankrizzo4460 I hope so.
@@ihaveinsomnia1 Possibly it was low tide that day 🤔
Annie Lyttle school has cameras, the cops will come inside looking for you, I was lucky and got out just in time.
Any places you can explore in Florida fellow explorer and resident
Lol I've been there before
Hurricane Ian finished off the dome houses in 2022.. they are all underwater now
Anyone remember Ringling Towers in Sarasota FL? That place has some serious history and hard times till it got torn down in the late 90s I think.
a piece of sarasota history gone. it is such a shame. it should have been restored.
There was a hole in the floor of school #4 in the cafeteria/gymnasium. You could access the basementish level through it, very creepy with sharp shadows and you can barely see where your stepping with all the dust in the air.
Man I havent heard the name Dozier in a very long time. I was 17 years old when my local judge had enough of seeing me. I was on a waiting list for Dozier, STAR and Avon Park. Whatever bed opened up first I was the lucky winner. Fortunately for me I got sent to Avon Park Youth Academy. You always heard stories about Dozier and Brovard. Avon Park was a gladiator field but it was nothing compared to Dozier. It's crazy that it didnt get closed till 2011. Avon Park was closed a few years later for similar charges. No one was killed to my knowledge but there were 100's of beatings and assaults by staff, sex, drugs and gang battles. Hell I can remember half the fights starting just due to how freaking hot it was. They put us in an old army base that had no A.C.
I was there in 1960-61, cottage 11 or 12.
I saw Marine Stadium back in the 90's when I visited Miami and have pics somewhere. Went to Discovery Island my 1st trip to Disney when I was five and always wanted to venture around River Country, since I never got there when I went to Disney in my younger days.
The Ambassador Hotel is currently being renovated into a Wyndham boutique hotel
Homestead Air Force Base has been used for quite a bit of nephritis experiences. After Andrew, the Government looked the other way.
How can you put this much effort into a video and not know Hi Lie
That's not a human silly. Can't you hear the robo in it?
I remember when Jai Alai was very popular in Florida. I recall the players had a circuit, visiting Fort Pierce, Dania, and Miami Jai Alai. I remember Joey being their best player. The frontons that were still standing were converted to poker rooms.
Grew up around the corner from harder hall been all through that place. It was recently bought with the promise to renovate it. But with this economy I doubt it will happen
When I get my car in the future I’m definitely taking Road trips to some of these places
they’re mostly closed and destroyed
I spent a few evenings at the big bend Jai Alai, I remember going to the lounge after the last game for a few drinks one night.
I remember when the JaiAlai place was still booming in Quincy Florida. It was surprising to see it existed here to begin with. It's a Basque handball game played with a long curved basket, that's used to catch and throw. Like squash or racquetball, or in Spanish as here said, fronton.
I remember that place too.
I was a player on the final evening they were open. The entire sport dying in the U.S. is just a shame.
The Ambassador Hotel is currently being renovated.
I live in Naples, FL and sad to say this. But the dome houses were completely taken out by hurricane Ian. Naples had home's destroyed. But Fort Myers and Bonita Springs had home's completely wash away down by the beach.
It was sad and still is sad to know how much people lost. I know it was going to be bad when I heard hurricane Ian passing. I just didn't know we were going to get so much storm surge that was pretty scary.
I helped clean up in Naples and the smell inside place's was a smell I will never forget. Because I knew I was smelling deceased people or animals mixed with salt water from the beach.
This is A ,AI Idiot that our this together isnt from Fl.
I heard it was a 5 but they said it was 4 for insurance reasons.
That is horribly sad. 😢
I spent my school years growing up in Sebring and seeing Harder Hall every day. There were a good many speculative stories about the history of the hotel. I wish it could be restored.
I went to Avon Park Youth Academy. It's right there by Sebring. I spent 11 months in that facility sweating my nuts off.
@@FloridaHockeyFan I was there from April 1981 - September 1995.
There use to be a Hi LIE fronton in Cassleberry off 17-92 and a dog track on dog track road back in the 70's.
I'd also like to mention that there is an abandoned naval air station in Green Cove Springs, FL, just west of the St. John's River. The surrounding area is still active, with many industrial companies still operating. There are cameras and security.
The Ambassador Hotel is currently in redevelopment.
I kind of take offense about the comments regarding my uncle's hotel, Harder Hall. Your narration of "remaine open for short period of time", before my uncle was forced into bankruptcy was incorrect. I'm sorry but 59yrs being open as as a resort hotel is an achievement most hotels could only wish for. Especially when you consider the only things Sebring had to offer was its racetrack, climate, and golf courses. We didnt even really have fishing being landlocked with only Lake Jackson and its much smaller saiamese twin. Snowbirds were the livelihood of this resort and every year I'd see the same faces when I visited in the summers and winters. Man the stories I could tell about this place. Think of the character's of Caddyshack and that would be spot on but with several Rodney Dangerfields running around. This place was majestic. Hope it sees a better future....
I was 3 yrs old when I went to the marine stadium. my grandma got her car stuck in the mud.
The Elvis movie "Clambake" was filmed around and at Marine Stadium.
Recession did not cause the initial demise of the Harder HallIn 1927, before opening, Harder and Hall went bankrupt on the project, it was then purchased by a group including US Congressman Edgar Raymond Kiess. With Vincent Hall returning as resident manager. On January 21, 1928, the classic Spanish Style hotel and golf resort opened on the shore of Little Lake Jackson.
Also a new owner in 2022 and 2023 is remodeling currently
We need more of this…
#10 is cool, been to it in person but its all gated off past the parking lot. tried to get in but there was security there
I used to gamble there. Crazy times
Jai Alai is pronounced Hi Lie
I remember watching commercials for Big Bend when I was a kid.
Part 2 please🙏
I laughed so hard when he was trying to say, Jai-Alai. His pronunciation was priceless. It’s pronounced “Hi Lie”. Lmao
I remember they commercials for ... "Biiiiig Bennnddd Hiiiiiiiiiiiii Liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!!!" Those were the days 😂
7:59 the robotic voice… Jai Alai 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
It is supposed to be pronounced "HI-Li",not Jia Alai.
Hai a lai, said very quickly.
Wonder if any of them are near me. I have friends and family in Florida and not a single person is anywhere near me anybody that comes to visit is at least 4 to 9 hours away Would be surprised if we made it on this.
I feel you....I'm from Florida originally, I live in Indiana , all my family is in Florida no one ever comes to visit when you live so far away, it sucks.
The J is silent in Spanish. It's pronounced Hi a li with a very soft a.
Yep, that's correct. I live three counties west of that fronton lost money there. Heard rumors of how a player could cheat.
Ive seen Leonard Skynard and Loggins and Messina at the Marine Stadium.
ROBOT VOICE: JAI ALAI is pronounced as "HIGH-LIE"
It's called HI-LI .
What about harter hall in seabring
it's there maybe number 7 or so....
Dog tracks were sadly closed in 2021 in Florida
Not sad about it. If owners and trainers would have treated the dogs better, it would probably still exist. However, alot of abuse was discovered and dogs were being killed for "not performing". And while the greyhound rescues were doing the best they could, they weren't always getting a lot of cooperation. And when the tracks were being closed, owners were selling their dogs to China, where it was even worse for them. They didn't care.
hm time to go explore since im in florida
Me too😅
The Dome House is gone. Last hurricane took it out.
Another “black eye” for Disney. Not surprising, no longer Magical, dwindling in mediocrity annually.
We think of Brazil !!
I do not agree as the top 10. There are 100 of places in Florida us long term residents aware of.
Oh please name them! I live in Tarpon Springs Fl❤
I heard Florida is light in the loafers
no I4 Eyesore?
No more greyhound races anymore!
WHO NEEDS ABANDONED STRUCTURES WHEN YOUR VOICE IS ENOUGH TO CREEP OUT ANYONE.
im surprised six flags atlantis and boardwalk and baseball didnt make the list. i guess they may not have been old enough at shut down.
Boardwalk & Baseball was old, called Circus World back in the 70s before. Disney killed it like everything else it could.
I remember them. Circus World had like 1 ride I think...a carousel.
If you guys where looking for a cool ahh bando go to holy land experience different world but last time i went got chased by security💀
The Holy Land closed?? 😢
There was a Jai Alai fronton in Tampa, where it was pronounced: "High Li." The several "Jai Alai frontons" in Florida were owned by separate corps, so they couldn't save money with combing group insurance, advertising & marketing. Ron W4BIN
Ok, let’s see how many of these I recognize.
Marine Stadium isnt exactly abandoned as it is used during the Miami boatshow, as well as occasional other shows.
Hi li
Hurricane Ian just drowned the dome
what about the old nickelodeon studios?
How do you charge a building for anything? Source?
This interesting video would be so much better if the voiceover didn’t sound so computer generated.
We say HI-LI !!
So, did you use AI to make the whole video or just the voice over?
That is our video clip from the 12:19 -12:23 mark
That was our old channel our new one is ruclips.net/channel/UC6F6Ntt1qvRzgDPqouFG7TA
3:21 you guys see that hole in the building? The one on the roof on the left side? I went though there lol it’s pretty crazy getting up there but it’s pretty cool I can see the hole from this video
turn the not needed background music......gets annoying
I think ChatGPT videos should be outlawed.
A robot narrating this?
Jai alai is pronounced ( high lye)
the sport with the basket on the arm is pronounced "hi lie"
Domes are gone in Cape Romano. Hurricane Ian saw to that. The jet test site is now home to thee biggest Burmese pythons the state has ever seen. Google pythons and the test site.
...the surviving animals were relocated?
8:27 bruh. Jai alai? Really??
You should PLAY YOUR BACKGROUND MUSIC LOUDER so No one can hear what you are saying.
I pronounce it die alot
Pronounced Hi-Alai... not Jai...
I think its computer generated voice.
9:20 frun-ton is how you pronounce that. Not frone tone…. #bebetter
High lie, not jiahh lie
It's pronounced "high lie".
I love these abandoned places videos. But please 1)mention the locations, cities where these are and 2)don’t use artificial intelligence to narrate. It’s irritating.
Its pronounced Hi-ah-lie!
FAKE Ai announcer.
Why - Do - You - Talk - Like - A - Robot?
Obviously - Robots - Can't = Pronounce - The - Silent - "J" - Sound. It's - Pronounced - Like - "Hi-Lie".
They forgot that 7" btwn Gov.DeSantis ears.
HOW! 😖
How can someone "woke" be so ignorant?
Let's Go Brandon.
You need to learn how to pronounce names before you put your videos out. The game Jai Alai the Jai is pronounced "Hai Alai not like you pronounced it. Interesting video otherwise.
I stopped watching after the second because the insane background noise was drowning out the narrator. Could be a fantastic narrative.
Easier to bet on Dogs
Then u pay no humans
Unless they win Right
