What I love about hearing James sings songs like this is seeing all the vocal techniques he has to use to make it work. The guy was not a naturally gifted singer and has had to work his arse off for years to learn how to do it. It's great watching him put that knowledge and experience to work to overcome his short comings.

@@brfam1977 Was he the only one? I mean singers lose/change around 35-40 all over the place and have to learn to sing differently. Lizzy Hale went the same route.
At least, both gave amazing performance even though on the roag to destroying their chords in the process. And yet here he is singing at 60 and pretty damn good I might add.
People say how much better Staley was for this style but personally I don't hear such control or clean high notes ever in the live performance of would by alice in chains. I mean he had the perfect voice for those songs, not a perfect singer by any means.

I saw Alice in Chains on the Clash of the Titans tour in 1991. The three co-headliners were Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth, three of the Big Four of thrash metal. AiC was fairly heavy and hard, but they weren't exactly thrash, and the crowds were not exactly sure what to think of them. (That may be putting it mildly).
When "Would" came out, though, it was in heavy rotation on the local hard rock radio station, and the frantic, despairing sound really resonated with me as I was dealing with a turbulent (and ill-advised) relationship.
Now, more than two decades later, the biggest of the Big Four have given us this superb rendition of "Would" and thus proven that Alice in Chains really was metal all along. 😉
