Friends don't let friends only play half of an AIC song.
Though a very admirable performance, James knows not to even attempt what he won't be able to pull off (the end of the song).
@@gamiensrule i think James knocked this one out the park, and he definitely could have handled the end of this.
@@ltrev1979 I love James. And he's a great rock vocalist. No doubt. In my opinion I just don't think he's quite at Layne's level. But not many are.
But I respect your opinion. I'd definately love to hear him give it a shot.
More like friends shouldn't let less skilled friends play other great friend's songs.
great comment lol, i know exactly what you're referring to :)
rip layne
friends don't let friends
get friends haircuts
Dammit! You beat me to it.
They totally wasted the opportunity to write that on their guitars too!
Never understood that phrase
I guess it is because I'm not native english speaker
I thought it was:

I guess I was wrong

Good to see Kirk take time out of his scarecrow duties.
Brutal : )
Hahahahahahaha
This deserves way more thumbs up.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This made me laugh through my entire coffee making process. Thank you.
When he hits that “then” that is definitely Hetfield from the 90s
That note is the exact reason that I love this cover so much.
THENNNNNN-AHHH!!
Lol
True
Thats what I love about this
The real star of the video is kirk's hat
And Rob's 'stache, honestly.
your comment is the best part of the video
wonder if Kirk watches One Piece ?

@@cynthiamoney-powell3516 and not in a good way. I don't understand how people think Hetfield did such a great cover because, imo it's awful.
"Stanley"
@@loloholmes2793 for thrash metal vocalist like James, i'd say it's a decent cover.
Can't compare with Staley, Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder tho, they're on another level.
What I love about hearing James sings songs like this is seeing all the vocal techniques he has to use to make it work. The guy was not a naturally gifted singer and has had to work his arse off for years to learn how to do it. It's great watching him put that knowledge and experience to work to overcome his short comings.
And he pretty much destroyed his voice during the black album tour with the amount and type of vocals he was pulling off back then, not to mention his indulgences.
@@WfRamsey77thats why he hired a vocal coach during and after the tour, results of which you can hear on load and reload, and then after st. anger
He’s a naturally gifted piece of trash, who only cares about himself. This is all about saving face. Lane Staley would’ve knocked him out if given the chance.
True not naturally gifted in some ways and yet in other ways the vocal talent of a century. He's a weird mix!
@@WfRamsey77 Was he the only one? I mean singers lose/change around 35-40 all over the place and have to learn to sing differently. Lizzy Hale went the same route.
At least, both gave amazing performance even though on the roag to destroying their chords in the process. And yet here he is singing at 60 and pretty damn good I might add.
People say how much better Staley was for this style but personally I don't hear such control or clean high notes ever in the live performance of would by alice in chains. I mean he had the perfect voice for those songs, not a perfect singer by any means.
"Yeah"
-James Hetfield
This made me smile lol🤘
P O E T I C
Yeahhhh
Legend has it that Kirk left Hogwarts during the “sorting ceremony” to make it to this performance...
I haven't listened to Metallica in years.
I can't believe James Hetfield can to this very day sing like that!
He sounds fucking great
He improved a lot in recent years, it was only during the 2000 to 2010 that his voice was kind of bad live
James' singing pretty damn impressive on this one. He hit a pretty high note for him in the "see it once my waaaaayaaayy" part.
He only was using 50% of his high voice in there
@@maxx.mazzeo if he went any higher it would purely be a falsetto, there wouldnt be any power behind it.
I felt like he was giving it his all and the others were half assing it lol.Still pissed about James making fun of Layne for his drug addiction back in the day.Made up for it to some degree taking the time to do this song
@@johncarlton4918still pissed about something that happened over 25 years ago 😂
James vocals man 👌🤘
It's amazing how good James sounds here. His voice is actually improving as he gets older and we're lucky to have Metallica in our lives! Loved Alice in Chains too.
Agreed, he's had the covid break to let his voice rest.
He's always been a good singer, this style just isnt for Metallicas music.
@@storfarbrorn489 James is a passable and distinctive singer, I don’t think I’d categorize him as a good singer though. He’s a riff god though
Lol gimme a fuckinf break. Only people that think this sounds good are Metallica fan boys. RIP Layne, you could never be touched
@@AndrewMiller-wd5gm Couldn't agree more!
Tbh I think James is actually the closest. He’s the only one that has that distortion in his voice when singing this song. The others just don’t have that distortion in their voice. It’s too smooth. Well damn. Well Done James!
Have you listened to Phil Anselmo sing this
@@tomislavtodorovic4024 yes I thought it was awful lol.
Look up "if Soundgarden wrote would" it's pretty incredible
Korn for me, the way Jonathan Davis hits the rasp and has that dark sound is amazing
0:56 Lars has the invisible hand hitting the hi hat
Props to James for adapting his voice over time to something more reasonable for his vocal chords to handle. Proof your singing doesn’t have to be “crazy”. It just has to sound good for the song it’s in.
I like how they had both electric and acoustic guitars. I think that is more of a tribute to Jerry's style than anything else in this. It's like if this song was released on Sap instead of Dirt.
Great comment
That is one of the best comments I've ever seen on the internet.
Im like whos on electric guitar for the solo? 😮
This video is the proof that james is metallica... without this man, there is no metallica at all
I'm 50 years old and I have been listening to Metallica for 37 years and they just keep getting better and better. To me, this band is nothing short of perfect! The memories that I have with my friends listening to this band is without a doubt some of the greatest times in my life. I will listen to this band until the pass because they are apart of the days that matter most to me........everyday!
Same here.... Im 50, long time die hard since RTL. I remember when MOP was released. My buddy got the tape cassette and we read lyrics over and over again. I remember when Cliff passed away. Same buddy of mone told me the news. He read it in a rock mag shortly after the accident. There was a lot of heavy metal and glam rock back in the day.... and then there was Metallica. We were kids, man.... great times growing up with the band, still the same fan today.
Kirk: oh so i should wear the hat?
Lars: totally man, it makes you look badass.
Rob: giggling, yeah bro do it.
James: fuck the hat....
Kirk: I'm gonna wear the hat.
Everyone watching: wtf is kirk wearing?
🤣😆😂* dying *
@@jasminazenkovic4195 lol 😆
Kirk's playing style is a fantastic imitation of AiC's here...and he didn't even use a wah! So perfect.
James' voice keeps getting better and better. They are paying their respects. Really Don't get the hate towards this awesome cover.
Me neither, but I was a bit bummed when they cut it off after the 2nd chorus. Nonetheless, I’m so happy to hear James still kicking ass.
Cause people have nothing better to do nowadays than bitch and moan on the internet. It’s really pathetic
James actually does nutshell really well he did it live with them I actually couldn't believe how good he did it they should have done that korn murdered this song they should have done nutshell
Korns version was awesome.
Lars ruins this...and james' voice is..meh
@@misterarcane3863 You are deaf if you think James' singing isn't great here. Literally, deaf.
Actually was quite impressed with this. James sounds great. The arrangement is a bit different. It's a good cover.
Hetfield will never be able to sing like Staley.
We all know that James's voice is the only one that can cover this song with dignity
its great they covered this. I know its hard for james to hit those vocals but i have to give him all thats due bc he killed this. love u guys \m/ sounded great!
James is a great vocalist but this song is not really in his range tbh
One of the greatest songs ever written
Put the blunt down. You're over your head. It's a great song. Y'all doin too much.
Gotta be honest, I didn't think James would manage the high notes but he did a great job.
Kirk should never be allowed in public without his goatee.
James voice is crazy good for his age, like fine wine
How long has Kirk been quarantining??!🤣😂
Too Long apparently ! At least he's not wearing a face diaper.
Love how they put their own twist on the original, and I've never seen james with an acoustic, honestly disappointed it wasn't the whole song though

The distortion James added to his voice in the chorus almost sounded like his 90's self... wish he was still young enough to incorporate that type of singing more regularly than he does nowadays
I’m obsessed with this
Nice of Luffy to fill in for Kirk.
This comment is so underrated haha.
King of the pirates right there baby .
Amazing lol
Kirk and Shanks are just really good friends
LMAO!!!!!!!!!😂
This is awesome. Seeing Metallica cover this AiC classic with such respect, reverence & quality adds to the legacy of both bands. On another note... The missing element, a live event with an audience, is sad, though as a longtime fan of both bands to me it sounds excellent just the same. I think those of us who've seen lots of concerts in our lifetimes can't help but lament the way things are these days. Acknowledging it's possible that the simple things we took for granted, like concerts, may never happen again is beyond depressing.
For those that dump on this... it's not easy for James. Layne has his unique voice. Completely different style. Plus it's accoustic. Metallica are huge aic fans. Love it
That's awesome. Really! I'm sure there's an even deeper connection for Metallica than most of us realize, too.
Yeah, maybe Hatfield feels guilty for mocking Layne to an entire concert crowd and mimicking Layne shooting up saying "I cant tour " or whatever. If not he should. He isn't worthy of singing Layne's song.

Got Damn James. You doing evolution backwards. You're supposed to be worse at singing, not better. METALLICA is the best band ever and I'm a huge early (68-72) Zeppelin fan.

I'm glad James fixed his attitude in rehab. I guess he can see it Layne's way now. Far cry from the James that made fun of Layne and got stuff thrown at him. Kudos for growing up, dude.

Cool cover. I like the the acoustic take. Korn's tribute with this song is awesome too.
I absolutely love Metallica and Alice In Chains, but it’s ironic to see Metallica do a cover of an Alice In Chains song considering that they were the ones who made fun of Layne and his heroin addiction
Yeah it was a dick move and I'm sure James would cop to that. Not an excuse but he it was during Metallica's low when James was drunk during the black album tour.
I love both bands too, but perhaps you don't know that Metallica was in the audience when Alice in Chains performed their Mtv unplugged concert AFTER they had made fun of him. That's why Mike Inez had put on his bass "Friend don't let friend get haircuts". I think they buried the hatchet long ago. Also, Metallica's current bassist played bass on Jerry Cantrell's solo album. See Anger Rising, etc.
