  • The BYU Cougars were pegged to finish 13th in the Big 12 Conference's preseason football media poll Tuesday and Jake Hatch believes it's a fair projection for Kalani Sitake and the BYU football program while also arguing it's a perfect spot for Brigham Young University (BYU) to emerge and surprise Big 12 pundits should the hype match the substance on the gridiron.
Jake then talked about senior defensive end Tyler Batty being the lone honoree to make the Big 12's preseason All-Conference team and he argues that Jay Hill needs stars like Batty to really step forward along with other difference-makers to aid BYU's hopes of rebounding from a disappointing 5-7 campaign a season ago and return to the postseason.
Finally, the show wrapped up with a Locked On Cougars insider group question and answer session as Jake addressed the Utah State Aggies' evolving situation as they appear to be poised to need a new head coach, expectations for Kevin Young and the BYU basketball program in the Big 12 and what the biggest recruits BYU might sign this recruiting cycle might be.

The team already knows how to win. We had a great 4-2 record at home. The issue is winning on the road. How come our boys can’t overcome the hostile environments. Figure that out and we’ll have an 8 or 9 win team.

I just hope they go 7-5! They have the ability to do so. But man………. If they go 5-7 again oh boy. There will be some big headlines towards the end of the season.

Sat near the front row at the Iowa State game last year. It was embarrassing. The D-line and linebackers were dealing with many injuries at that point and they were pushed around. Batty appeared to be trying to play two positions and lost contain on the outside multiple times. Big play after big play went for long runs around his end of the line. The next two games against OU and OSU was much better as some people came back from injury. Hopefully Batty can dominate and get some more help from the interior and linebackers.

With Sa'ili gone, there isn't any real reason to think the d-line will be any better against the run or pass than last year, unfortunately

It's pretty much impossible to have a "noticeably" good/great game being double-teamed, and it does make it more difficult to go hard every play with 2+ guys blocking you every play.
Best he can do is keep the motor going and tie up as many players as possible until he gets the help he needs for some freedom!
    Wouldn't THAT be nice!!!

O-line and D- line are the key. Last year they stunk. I see little or no improvement in personnel on the lines. As the qb goes so goes BYU. last years performance leaves no confidence in Retzlaff. Hope Gary can step up, but not optimistic.

  • @abbychristensen859

I agree when you say the BYU can surprise some people. The talent was there last year but the Oline looked stuck in the mud until the last two games. That was absolutely a coaching issue. So much was made about Utah having injuries, but BYU had many big injuries also. Starting QB, half the Dline, receivers, two starting safeties, running backs, best linebacker etc etc. Many improvements have been made which gives me high hopes. I also find it interesting that Rising is being heralded because he won the PAC 12 titles, yet Bohanon is hardly spoken about even though he is the only returning Big 12 champion in that position.

Just don’t have confidence in the cougars to win. Coaches do not seem to be able to adjust and change when things go badly. Injuries and Retzlaff game ending interceptions will be the norm. 6-6 would be a miracle season. Anything better than 3-9 will be gravy.

Cougs won 11, 10, and 8 games in the 3 seasons before 2023.
2023 was an anomaly at 5-7. BYU coaches adjusted accordingly after the down year in 2017, and they will adjust again. Give it time. I need not remind you that Utah went 5-7 in back to back years while adjusting to the Power Conference grind.

So just because the players know the play book all of a sudden means they’re going to win games? Isn’t that apart of football? You do know that other teams know their play book right?
Other teams will come out swinging. Just because the players know the scheme better doesn’t mean they’re going to win a bunch of more games.
    It’s all about execution.
