Thank you so much for bringing up DIVERSITY! I completely agree-- I see far too many people, in real life and the Internet, trapped in a genre. There are so many interesting things to read, I am constantly seeking new perspectives!
As a prof, I see everything you talked about re: books and thinking reflected in my students. Especially over the past 5 years or so, the drop in critical thinking has been alarming. Many students have language at hand that, on the surface, sounds accurate, but if you try to dig a bit deeper, they really cannot get beyond a shallow kind of thinking. Reading widely and deeply is the only solution!
Yes to year of the hobby!! I think about this so much and how I just need to commit to some hobbies after work so my brain isn’t rotting on my phone for hours
I always love your content and how you include musings that push us to think about how we live our lives!! I just want to mention, though I’m sure plenty of influencers do skim read, it is possible to read over 100 books a year. I work full time and I’ve read 150 books in 2024( and I promise I’ve actually read them). It simply is my main hobby, and I don’t have kids!
Love your reflection on the commodification of our lives as well as the ways in which discourse about books has become shallower. I’ve stopped using the book related apps all together in the last few months and opted to just read slowly, taking notes, letting myself even journal about things. It’s so good ❤
As a certified slow reader, with a very small book instagram channel, I absolutely agree on your take. Compared to 2020 when I started engaging on booksta, it has become insanely difficult to find interesting accounts with genuine, reflected reviews of books. Everything somehow became about the designs and how fancy the sprayed edges are 🙃 (and it's crazy how that translate to the bookstores as well, over the last month there's been a huge increase of books with sprayed edges at the stores).
So sorry to hear that you ended up in hospital! Hope you are fully recovered and can enjoy time with your friend 🧡 As a librarian, I agree wholeheartedly about developing a range of critical analysis skills and reading a diverse range of books.
Your comments re: BookTok - I imagine there's also an extra layer of pressure on authors now, too, in the way that musicians are being told that to "break through", you have to churn out TikTok-friendly soundbites rather than say, a comprehensive creative album. Makes me worry about not just the quality of book recommendations but of book writing and publishing and the pressures of virality vs. quality.
I started sewing last year at my local library and am obsessed with it. I have made myself so many lovely clothes! I am currently learning how to knit to make myself beautiful sweaters, but at this point between reading, sewing, crocheting, painting with water colors, and trying to run I think I have too many hobbies lol
hi nina! i hope you are feeling better 💖 going to the hospital can be so scary also thanks for the booktok thoughts. i gave up socials last year (except for yt that i don’t see as social) but i lost a lot of cultural input. i looked for it here on yt but it’s very hard to find creators that read something 1. other than romance 2. critically. and i like to rot my brain sometimes too but the majority of time i find it very hard to find recommendations that aren’t the same thing over and over again you really read things that wouldn’t be on my radar and i really enjoy it so just wanted to be grateful for that too! would you share the creators you mentioned? thanks!!
this was so lovely! nina you are such a joy to watch and always inspire me to think more critically about the things I engage in (running, reading, cooking, advocacy)! would love love love if you could share fellow creators that you appreciate (like the book ones you mentioned in this). I’m always looking to diversify the content I’m engaging with.
Speaking of thinking critically, I always love and listen to your book reviews when you do them here. You speak so eloquently about the books you've read and what you think about them! I'm not sure if you've shared this already, but do you have any tips on annotating books? Would love to know :)
Omg I feel you... What even are all those strange romance fantasy books, for instance, that keep popping up on all feeds? They are always called sth with "roses and thorns series" and things like that.
2023 was the year of hobbies for me and it’s actually changed my life completely. I love spending time on my own and have also found new ways to spend time with loved ones- creating and playing(not just at the pub talking although I still enjoy that from time to time) . The only downside is I am ready to retire (at 25XD) and do my hobbies all day! I also have less desire to travel than before I did all of my hobbies - I just want to hang at home doing hobbies or meeting up with friends. I feel so fulfilled and can revisit something tangible that I did and all the good times come back- I love it so much 💗
So good that you talk about diversity in this video! I agree that most book influencers read and recommend the same books almost at the same time. I wonder if they just do it because they got the books for free and feel like they have to do it. Thanks for sharing your take, waiting to hear more of your book recs 😊
Glad you’re feeling better. Hope you get some time to just relax towards the end of the year. I went from reading about 50 books a year to nearly 150 (fiction and non-fiction) during the pandemic and kept near to that pace for a couple years. This past year-for various reasons-I completely crashed out and simply stopped reading altogether. Trying to restart myself for 2025, but definitely refocusing myself on wanting to read rather than feeling that I should be reading.
such a good conversation about algorithm culture, i've often felt a bit trapped just going by reviews of things (in general). there's so little space for surprises and coincidence and indeed, everyone consumes the same things. i've never been on tiktok so i don't exactly know what it's like on there but the rest of the world is going in the same cookie cutter direction. alsooo wow the hospital thing - glad you're ok!!
Glad you’re recovering Nina, it was quite a big feat!👏🏼❤️ But why did this video end? I was enjoying listening to you and oops look what happened it ended 😭 More Nina talk please 🙏🏻
Kristen Leo acaba de subir un video donde comenta cosas similares sobre el pensamiento crítico y la necesidad de hacer nuestras vidas "consumibles". Viva el abandonar la sobre-estimulación wiju!!!!!
I feel like so many girls don't know the secrets they deserve to know. I found this book,' The Irresistible Seduction Formula' by Olivia Simmons and it’s literally life changer. Has anyone else heard of it?
Not only is everyone readind and recommending the same books/genre, but now everyone decided to comment about books everywhere (???) every single youtuber i watch now has a book recommendation/book haul section in their vlogs or whatever and i dont even understand the concept of recommending books to be honest, i find it so lame... especially when every single one of them is basically the same or a continuation of the other (?)

This is such a thoughtful and refreshing point of view beyond "phones are bad and ruining our attention spans"

"You don't have to read 15 tiny books to get to your goodreads goal." Omg, me sitting here with my Clare Keegan stressing.
HAHA

Was the book intermezzo by sally rooney? 😭😂
Strongly agree on this point, read whatever you like, not what's in fashion and nice in pictures

I'd love to read the article you mentioned about listening to Joe Rogan etc. Could you please share it?

I haven’t but I’m adding it to my list !
