Music has a way of speaking to our souls. In this piece, the first 86,472 notes are saying "I'm an old man, but I can shred this cello like a Ginsu Knife, and if you don't like it . . . " The last two notes speak for themselves!!
is this by far the cleanest recording of the song i have ever heard by far. rostropovich is absolutely amazing. even being able to control dynamics at such a tempo
This is one of the most insane and best virtuosic pieces I have ever heard ever! I just can't stop listening to the virtuosic impossibility crossed with exhilarating beauty that I hear in this piece. Rostropovich was definitely one of the all time greats.
It's amazing to see the change in Rostropovich's expression when he finishes the piece..It's something like, 'Focus, intense, virtuosic awesomeness ' * piece ends* 'Back to being a mere mortal'
Marvellous performance. He almost makes it look easy. I heard Rostropovitch during his best performing years in London, at that time he was phenominal. I have never been so impressed by any other cellist. At those concerts I was truly amazed.
When you look at the speed, I don't think anyone has played this piece as fast. And when you look at the clarity of the notes even regardless of the speed, you again have to say that no one plays it as beautifully and as clearly and with as unerring an interpretation. And when you combine the two, you simply have to accept that this man is a miracle that can have no equal, perhaps even in the world of the violin. He makes the cello sound as an instrument simpler to play than the violin!!!
Great playing and happy to see him smiling at the end. He was usually dead serious when playing. I bet that time he was in good humor and cracked a few jokes after playing. Even just one little smile made things seem in a different light. Well, what a performance it was ! Definitely a favorite.
Because Popper was a cellist, which is immediately apparent if you pick up his etude books and find how simple it is to playing something extraordinarily flashy. That dude new how to write music for a cellist.
During his best playing years he was the world's best. He was a cellist genius. I heard him at his best,I know! He did so much for charity. A wonderful man!!
I heard Rostropovichperform in a recital in Philadelphia, PA shortly after he defected from the USSR in the '70's. As a encore, he played The Flight of the Bumblebee. That encore caused a near riot. People loved it and him as well. Bravo !!!
shloomper. He was absolutely at his prime in the '60s also for a great deal of the '70s and the '50s. He still played very well when he was much older;but naturally life had been very hard for him and he was such a brave generous man.
Well, there's no question that Rostropovich was a masterly technician (and, in the right things, a great interpreter, too). But this performance sounds to me more like an army on the march than like a group of elves dancing.
lol, i laugh when i first heard this as compared to others. It's so incredibly fast !!!!!I must say this is one of the best celloist i've seen.5 stars!!!
@TheBowbros3 I was dumbfounded when I heard this and at the same time amused at the hyperactivity of it. Your comment about elves and coffee was hillarious and I laughed for a several minutes...thanks
OF course the Maestro tears it up! But my personal delight comes from Rostropovich's moving slow passages. He was, in my humble opinion, just the greatest.
@MickCorgi It's the Stahlhammer end pin. Oh, and the sound doesn't change AT ALL when you use the bend end pin. I asked my teacher and he said it doesn't affect the sound in any way. He used it before.
Haha, wow. I don't remember writing that! Yes, now I like Popper's compositions more than I used to since I got to listen to them a little more... and Hungarian Rhapsody by him is difficult but fun to play! :-D - although this piece...it's a challenging piece not only to play but also to listen to.
DANG!! wow, every time I here a song then listen to him play the same song I swear he plays it in at least half the time. It's sooo fast! (not always better though, just faster).
Cello levels:
Hard
Virtuoso
God
Rostropovich
Yup
I love how Rostropovich is playing his nearly impossible part so fast the pianist can't keep up.
neither could the elves
Rostropovich can't keep up with himself, listen to the pitches...
daughter?
@@vauxhall908 YES! A mediocre accompanist
It’s his daughter Elena
Rostropovich performing for President Jimmy Carter at White House back in 1978.

it's like he's tickling the cello T_T~!!! its amaazzzzinnnggg.
Great realization! That piece really IS about tickling the lovely cello - and it chuckles!
Huh, really!
The best violoncellis of all the times!
My hands cramped watching him play this piece. Absolutely amazing!!!
He doesn't look tired or nervous. And everyone can hear every note!!
This is what happens when elves have way too much coffee!!!!!!!!!
Randy Mastin HAHAHAHA
Great this one !!😂
is this by far the cleanest recording of the song i have ever heard by far. rostropovich is absolutely amazing. even being able to control dynamics at such a tempo
if you can play it slowly...
You can play it quickly! 😂
@@mayadevane3157 idk, can you?
I can't even play it slowly
I cannot
God Mode Activated.
There is a mode above that, Rostropovich mode.
Then Donald Trump 'migration shutdown' mode.
This is one of the many reasons he will always be one of the greatest cellists of all time =)
Any elf that successfully plays this becomes a Troll. Successfully.
+dandypajamas Especially when they successfully practice it!
Popper also wrote a “Gnomentanz” actually

My fingers hurt just listening to this song and then again, this, indeed, is one of the reasons he is of the greatest cellists.
Ah yes, the national anthem of being fired into a giant marshmellow.

This is excellent playing. During his very best playing years I heard him in London several times. He was incredible!! Nobody came near him!!
I was very lucky, I heard him at his very best several times in London.
Wow... The way he maintains sound quality and volume through all those position changes
Simply beautiful. Such grand form in his playing....
i love this piece of music, and not only does he play it technically amazing, put musically its incredible
he is very good! he is wonderful! the music is amazing

The man's a powerhouse! Probably the fastest I've ever seen anyone play an instrument. I only wish that the video were of better quality.
amazing cellist.....nobody could, can and will be able to play like him EVER!!
Thats crazy amazing!!! He was truley blessed!!

This guy genuinely made me check if the video was sped up
Just simply... how the F does any human DO THAT?????????
I wanna know...
Dan McGlaun practise....
Practice, and a lot of passion !
"human"
Simplesmente sensacional!!! Isso que é dom para a música.
I admire how he chooses to use his pinky in thumb position, the amount of teachers who teach not to do that is amazing
as a cello teacher I won't say you don't do it. If your pinky has enough power then sure you can press with your pinky
LOL ..... Bloody marvelous. Never seen or heard the likes of that. Stupedous !!
Bravo Rostropovitch!!! Hehehe, however it give me a wish, add my own Elfentanz online here.... I´ll do it! In honour of Master!
Have a little respect for a great cello Maestro, legend in his own time.
Well, there's no question that Rostropovich was a masterly technician (and, in the right things, a great interpreter, too). But this performance sounds to me more like an army on the march than like a group of elves dancing.
He probably wouldn't be offended
Welp. What can he say. Lol he was RUSSIAN!!
My fingers ache just watching this, and I don't even play the cello! Bravo Rostropovich!
@goodandplenty508 I was at that same recital in Philly. Slava has been my idol for years. I imagine he will remain that way for many years to come!
what. cannot comprehend virtuosity. mind = blown o.O
Slava - R.I.P. - was THE cello & a wonderful person!!!
Damn... that's some amazing NOTE HITTING for such a fast piece. I would be missing so many notes trying to play that.
I'm in absolute AWE.

Bravo maestro !!!!
Having 4 years of playing the cello, needing a challenge, I decided to teach myself this song. About halfway into the 1st page.
did you learn it by now?
Yeah right...
This breaks your dreams.
