This house reminds me of what happened when a friend of mine cleared out her aunt's house. The aunt was in her 90's, fell, had to go into assisted living. The aunt lived a "spartan" life and sometimes people from church would bring meals over. My friend was going to throw out a shoe box, decided it would be better to look inside and found the box full of money. Then there was the too-thick dishtowel that was two towels sewed together with money inside. My friend said, "...we lost count at $225,000". The money was invested and used to support the aunt and maybe also the aunt's sister.

Hi Adam, i wanted to tell you to NOT over clean any pottery you find as it is more valuable with the effects of the kiln firing left in tact. This is particularly true of pottery fired using primitive methods. As an art major from the dark ages (many years ago), and one who has fired pots using dung, tires, salt glaze and more standard and commercial kilns, it is best to leave the effects of the firing process intact. What may look like dirt might in fact be carbon or other effects of firing. A light dusting should suffice. If the future owner wants to clean it ,that is on them. Anyone familiar with primitive firing methods would want that. Thanks and I love your videos. Also be sure to open any windows or doors you can while cleaning. Invest in some passive electric heaters (don't over stress the electrical system without checking it out) and check out mold killers. Amonium Chloride is the best and can be bought retail as a product called Microban.

I know this was posted years ago but some of the pieces looked to be done with the Raku firing technique. It’s used with a quick reduction process with carbon material. when glazed ceramics are taken from the kiln while they are still glowing red hot and are then placed in a material that would be able to catch fire (newspapers). This technique is used to starve the piece of oxygen, which creates a myriad of colors within the glaze. So the newspaper hoarding most likely was apart of her pottery.

The obituaries in the newspapers would be valuable to genealogy groups especially if the local cemeteries have not been documented yet in the Find A Grave Website or Ancestry. Some bigger centers have the papers on microfilm but the smaller towns would not likely have them scanned or have them online. I spent a week in the summer photographing each headstone of six cemeteries in Southern Saskatchewan and spent the winter adding the photos and names to the website. I searched for obituaries online to help complete all of the details - the trouble is that they don't go back very far date wise online. Even working on my own family history I was grateful that mom and I had saved obituaries from over the years. I myself would not want the work of going through those papers but someone local to that area may find them invaluable.

I was at the flea market about 20 years ago, and some people were selling their late mother's boxes of sewing patterns. They had probably 8 large boxes full and were selling them for cheap. A few people bought some patterns and then a little while later they started selling like hotcakes. They were down to the last box and wondering why out of date clothing patterns were selling so well, that they decided to pull a pattern out and look in the pouch. Turns out that the mom saved money all her life by putting cash in with the used pattern packets before storing them away. I lost faith in much of humanity because of those that took advantage of those sellers. The lesson learned is to check inside of everything you are selling first!

Not only that, if someone works on their own projects, and even if things are free they would cost a fortune in shipping alone. As most things are not available in stores these days. I was really mad when my dad pitched a bunch of 6L6GC tubes brand new in the box, and they are with a few hundred a piece today. Some just do not get why by things when on sale before you need them at a low price, as that makes far more sense than buying things on credit when you have to have them as my parents do. Then they wonder where all the money has gone. I had plenty till a bunch of expensive items were lost, and they have none because they gave it to the banks. I ask what makes more sense?

My grandmother is senile at 88, and still alive even all the walking she does it to the WC and back umpteen times a day, like a 4-5-meter walk. Luckily no diapers and all that, but she can easily spend several hours on the loo forgetting where exactly she sits. I live in a flat she (and I, for all means and purposes the property is mine both legally and practically) got from the city as a social benefit after 15 years in queue (there is still a thing like that in Russia, Moscow in particular - got a two-room flat in the outskirts instead of a room in a shared flat in the very center of the city back in 2001... The location was nice - 20-minute walk from the Kremlin, but everything else was not, including a slightly mental neighbor, plus a house itself is well over 100 years old, so no regrets).
Since my grandma is demented and dementia is a thing that comes in stages, I witnessed it all for the last 12 years - a degradation of a sharp-minded person into deaf, almost blind and dysfunctional semblance of a human who preserved only 10% of personality and worst 10% at that (one of the things we don't have in Russia is decent and affordable retirement homes for people with dementia and Alzheimer's). Luckily there was no classic hoarding like in the case from this video and judging by other known cases I have it easy enough, but lots of towels, sheets and blankets were cut in half, there were weird purchases from MLM companies (that was not that much of a problem because of the lack of funds) and systematic putting of metal objects into microwave (the microwave amazingly survived almost unscathed and still works) plus heaps of burned or soured food until my mom took the matter of cooking in her hands couple of years ago, coming every day (she's retired and likes cooking, and I have to work anyway even if I was a cook more decent than I am).
A month ago I completely renovated my kitchen from the ground up, leaving only cutlery, utensils, some pans. microwave and fridge but the rest of the flat is still waiting for that (partially because anything else can't be done with grandma around, and the money issue is still there...).
Before that kitchen renovation I cleaned up... a lot. I do live in this flat but since I'm a journalist, in the previous 10 years I often was away for days, sometimes weeks, came home to just to get some sleep in my room and didn't pay much attention to grandma's undoings. It took me DAYS to clean up several small areas... One day I trashed 40 (FORTY) kilograms of plastic and paper shopping bags and food packaging (including yogurt cups and flattened milk cartons) that were stored unknown to me! Each neatly folded, packs of them stored between the water mains (one of them hot) in a closet behind the toilet. Ten or so years worth of supermarket plastic bags. Junk books (occultism and pseudoscience, that sort of things she bought in quantity in her early 70s when mental regress started to creep in) made another 120 kilos or so of garbage. About 60 kilos of old clothes, footwear and bed linen... All that from a tiny part of 51 square meters. Luckily grandma cut all her ties with the outside world about 8 years ago and my family was never rich so I'm not worried about any cash stashed anywhere. Last week I demolished a 1965 dresser and a 1970 linen chest from grandma's room (they were in poor enough condition and almost empty after previous cleanups)... and finally it seems that days of sharing part of my living space with cockroaches are over... those wretched insects lost. Luckily nothing like mice and rats is even remotely possible here.

True, to someone who's an avid collector of her art, her studio tools could be their "holy grail", as it were. It's all in how you market that stuff, and to whom.

imagine this was Picasso's house and you found a bunch of dried up paint brushes, would you throw them away?

No one could understand how much work and endurance it takes to unhoard a house unless they have done it. It is a mammoth job! Been there, done that.

Did it as a kid as a family project on an abandoned house. They weren't even that much of hoarders but it is amazing how much stuff there was to move.

Ah definitely. I helped my brother once he bought one and cleaned it out, it was insane. The craziest thing we found were the bones of a dead dog under one of the apple trees in the yard... but damn was it satisfying cleaning the walls and actually seeing what colour they once were.

This is Fascinating. I'm so pleased you thought to film this entire process. I have so many feelings for this artist, I think this jumbled treasure trove is so evocative and so telling of them, and I really love seeing someone who enjoys "stuff" sifting through it with so much interest and care. Really, really great content. I can't believe my good fortune to stumble upon it!

The pin at 35:12 with the old coins is a vintage Girl Guides pin. It's a pixie pin from Brownies (younger generation). Girls would receive it upon enrollment.

You might want to rethink about keeping her journals, especially if it's about pottery! In time they could be worth something. (Silence Dogood letters). Take the news paper to the animal shelters!! They could really use them. Curious about that corner shelf @ 31:37. Reminds me of my foster parents. Call someone about the national geographic magazines! I know some companies buy back some of their older mags!
