when i do this to a shape that has a gradient between two colors, the grain effect removes the color and makes the gradient black and white. is there a way to avoid this?
i am so happy i found you! I’m an artist who keeps being told to use illustrator but I have no idea how it works. this is so helpful because now I know how amazing this this is! thank you so much, you are very very talented
Slow down at 12:00 onwards. There you get a good idea of how he applies Gradient, a texture as the gradient, and using the transparency tool thereafter to create the grungy look. Great video dude! I might just ace my assignment!
I'm learning flat design in Illustrator and all the options I found are boring and slow. I found your video and made me laugh. From all I've seen, it's the most fun way to do flat design, and you design is so beautiful and original. Any vector design takes time, but your style is the most simple and easy to follow I've found until now in flat design of characters. Thank you for the video.
Thanks for your kind words about my videos! I really appreciate it. I always try to explore new techniques in flat design to improve and share them. Your comment makes me want to invest and develops more content
Thank you for the video! Can you maybe explain how you make the shadows? When I draw a low-opacity layer it will also cover other areas, in your drawing you manage to create a shadow for one area at a time.
@@nioniostopmo Thank you! This is what I scrolled down for. I'm embarrassed to say I've been using Illustrator for years but never knew about the Shape Builder tool... Would always use pathfinder + clipping masks for this kind of stuff, which was painfully time consuming.
It's with the use of the shapebuilder tool (shift+M). steps: 1. Draw the desired shadow shape. 2. Then select both this shape as the other shape involved. 3. Use shift+M to activate the shapebuilder tool. 4. Click on the parts of the shadow shape you want to keep (or remove, doesn't matter), with the shapebuilder tool in action you see were the shapes intersect, this marks the object separation line. Clicking this splits the object into those separate parts. 5. Now the only thing left to do is delete the part you don't want to keep!
Question- (i am a beginner so please bear with me) how did u change the gradient of the shape without removing its original gradient color? i.e the green gradient u applied for the shirt please specify the steps i could not follow it in ur video, thank you
How do you make those clipping masks? I couldn't see with the speed if you ctrl+7 with the base shape on the top of the shading work or if you had a quicker way of doing it :) The artwork looks fantastic !!!!!!!
Love the process and amazing artwork. I'd like to know your process for adding the noise texture over the shadow layers. Its gives so organic look to the whole illustartion. Also if you share links to the sound track used in background. Love it
i always got confused about telling the prices of character illustrations .. suppose what will be charges for the same illustrations ?? maybe that can help me .
I cannot follow the shadowing step because when I use the Soft light tool, it always results in the brighter color instead of the darker tone as you did. How can I fix this issue? Thank you a lot
Awsome artwork! I missed a part of the process: the checkered pattern in the pants. I guessed that it was made using Clipping mask, but i dont know for sure.
He/She used the shortcut "Shift+D" twice to get into the "draw inside" mode. You can access from the toolbar near to the - fill, gradient, stroke - section!
when you make the grain texture u select the layer copy paste in place?, cuz when u selec the gradient to black and white u make opacity 0 and green behind it appears,??
thank you this tutorial, what tool are you using to cut the shape you create to add the shadow? I am trying with clipping mask but for some reason it doesn't work. Thank you
Woahh this is 🔥💞. But which version of illustrator is this? I don't have this much tool and the texture brush . Did I really have to pay or something for this all features 😅😂? ( using adobe illustrator for free that's why I am asking 🙃)
What a great video. Loved it and love your work! I like the effect you get using the Grain effect with Overlay & Soft light blending modes (about 13:05 into the video). When I try and reproduce the effect, my result is very different. Here's what I do: create an object > Cmd C Cmd F> on the upper layer I make a gradient from 100% Black to 0% White. Then I go to Effect>Texture> Grain with settings Intensity 2 Contrast 2 Stippled. Everything is fine to this point, but if I select either Overlay or Soft light, the stippled effect just disappears. If I use the Multiply Blending mode, it works just fine. Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance.
Maybe the direction of the gradient color is wrong. Let check the gradient color on your texture object, use the gradient tool (G) then drag and drop on it to change. Or another reason is the way the blending mode works. If your skin color is too light, Overlay and Soft Light will be less effect and maybe you almost didn't see it working
@@cricketdesign Thanks for you quick reply. I left a note just above your reply saying that the Effect would not work because i was in CMYK and the Effect only works in RGB. I did try an experiment where I did the Effect in RGB, then Expanded Appearance before converting the file to CMYK. The results are not great, but maybe with practice, they could be improved upon. Thanks again for the great video and getting back to me so soon.
@@timventura Oh my god, I missed your note before answering. Btw Thanks for taking the time to share your experiment. I don't usually work with CMYK so it's a new experience and I will try it out.

Thank you for the beautiful video. I want to know how to easily cut shapes when making shadows. I've been wondering for a long time.

Those came for grain: Apply gradient to shape then Effect > Texture > Grain
How did he remove the lower part of guitar?

@@gepettowins you can duplicate the layer just above it and change the blending mode of grain layer to 'multiply'
