    Something I like to point out to reactors is that, Lyrically, you'll notice in "Different Beast" that the men are happily saying "WE are a different beast" as they enjoy their cleverness, until Odysseus gives them all orders to mutilate and leave the Sirens to die painful and slow, then they sing "HE is a different beast" like they're distancing themselves from his change
    Odysseus also comes in repeating his order "Kill them all" over and over again like he has to push them to do it

  • @BB_Creative

    The reason why Eurylochus opening the bag is a big deal is because that is Odysseus’s Right-Hand Man. His second in command (His brother in law too but that isn’t mentioned in the musical) He was told specifically what was in the bag and to not open it, him opening it is the ultimate betrayal for Odysseus. Considering when Eurylochus opened the bag, they were only like ten away from Ithaca. They were literally RIGHT THERE, which makes the betrayal worse.

Part of why Eury was so mad was that Ody had Eury pick 5 friends to die, and Eury himself as the 6th, with none of them knowing so Odysseus would be guaranteed to survive. And for the Circe’s island thing, Eurylochus was trying to save the lives they had left after Poseidon, and he was technically right bc if Hermes didn’t pop out of nowhere afterwards Ody would have died

    Odysseus was willing to sacrifice everything and everyone to get home. He knew what he was doing when he told Eurylochus to light six torches, he was making his second in command choose who would die to allow himself to get through unscathed.
    That is not the type of person that he used to be and the others realised that, following him was no longer a safe idea as they knew he’d readily throw them to the monsters to ensure his own survival. Odysseus was willing to cross every single line to have a chance to get home, even if it meant he would be the only one left.

    • @Dracon350
      @Dracon350 2 месяца назад +7

      not only did he delegate the abhorrent task of (unintentionally) choosing who to sacrifice to Eurlyochus, he also likely intended to have Eurlochus be one of the six casualties, as he specifically instructed him to light the torches.

    • @kani841
      @kani841 2 месяца назад +3

      @@Dracon350 not necessarily. eurylochus is his second in command so giving him that task was most likely not meant to be malicious. or it could be given that he was just told by Eury that he opened the wind bag and extended their trip unnecessarily. depends how you think of it

    • @Dracon350
      @Dracon350 2 месяца назад +10

      @@kani841 i definitely feel that there was malicious intent in choosing Eurylochus. it's a task he could've told ANYBODY, but he specifically told Eurylochus with the knowledge that those who held the torches would be the sacrifices. he was putting Eurylochus into harm's way just by telling him to light the torches, even if he didn't mean for Eurylochus to hold one.
      it's definitely an interpretation thing, but it's hard not to link the events together when right before this. Eurylochus reveals that he's essentially the reason that 558 men are dead, among other things.

    • @kani841
      @kani841 2 месяца назад +1

      @@Dracon350 Definitely could be. But even with such recent betrayal i don’t think the Odysseus portrayed in this saga would’ve been able to sacrifice Eury so readily. Like yes he was ready to sacrifice 6 members of his crew but I personally don’t think he wanted Eury to die.
      Even when he sacrificed the rest of his crew it was only because he was literally given no other choice by the God of Gods and his decision WAS right after the whole crew betrayed him (again).
      It really is just a perspective thing

    • @Dracon350
      @Dracon350 2 месяца назад +5

      @@kani841 i think, with enough time to process, Ody would do as you said, but i think, going into Scylla already prepared to lose 6 men, and with the recent information of Eurylochus' betrayal that lead them there in the first place, he wanted to punish his friend somehow, and in the moment chose to make him a sacrifice. i'm sure Ody would've felt completely awful if Eurylochus had died, but in the moment, i feel as if the anger he'd have felt would've outweighed his logic, especially since he'd just became the monster.

  • @niffleraku
    @niffleraku 2 месяца назад +16

    scylla is an entirely separate monster from the sirens to answer your question. She's not even really an aquatic monster in the original, she just lives in the cliff side by the sea. But ofc in epic it's kind of scarier and creepier if she came out of the water.
    Also yes eurylochus was the one who said in the circe saga to leave the men who turned into pigs initially. But throughout the musical he also changed. Putting simply, Odysseus' speech of not leaving anyone behind bc the guilt is immense and he cares for them changed eurylochus' general logical opinion of sacrifice for survival.
    He's feeling betrayed in Mutiny bc odysseus essentially broke that promise. It was basically "You were supposed to be the compassionate one, what happened?"
    Eurylochus also knows that in the past even tho Odysseus has screwed up in some decisions, a lot of those decisions were made in good faith. So to him, Odysseus essentially giving up on trying to find other ways and jumping straight to the sacrifice solution was very fucked up, bc he believes odysseus' thinking prowess would've come up with something else

  • @rsmcleary

    Also something that the animator of the Thunder Bringer animatic confirmed; Eurylochus(Ody’s right hand man) may have ran in to attack Ody at the end, but when Zeus struck them with the lightning he pushed Odysseus out of the way in time so he wouldn’t get hit. Thats why his hand is stretched out and not his sword at the end. It’s little details like that that makes me really feel for Eurylochus

    A random note on siren songs: The live action remake of The Little Mermaid touched on that subject. The reason for Ursula taking her voice was because one song could make a man fall in love forever. Prince Eric fell the moment he heard the girl on the beach sing, so she might have been onto something it was only fair to give up her voice so no cheating. And how Eric fell in love with Ursula was the same spell, the same song using the same voice. Never underestimate a mermaid or siren song.

    Medusa is in fact apart of this mythology and her story is one of the saddest. She was a maiden priestess of Athena who was the most beautiful woman on earth, every man wanted her, including the Gods. Poseidon came to her and courted her, he didn’t take no for an answer and SA’d her in Athena’s temple. Athena then cursed her though we are unsure if it was a curse or a gift to prevent man from ever disgracing her again. Perseus a son of Zeus would later come and take her head after she spent the last half of her life in solitude constantly hunted. He took her head to be a wedding gift and then gave it back to Athena by placing it in her temple.

    With Scylla, he had to choose between sacrificing 6 men for sure, or Scylla just wrecking their ship and probably killing most if not all of them.
    Before, he might've tried to find a different path but now he's hardened and desperate, a stone cold pragmatic, so he made the "obvious" choice of 6 men rather than all of them.

    These are the cows of Helios therefore this is his statue, as the first Sun God but in Greek Mythology, and Apollo appeared later as the new God of the Sun, and this happened in Greek Mythology because people forget about the god if no one prays to them anymore, or don't bring gifts to their temples, and here only Odysseus knows about Helios because maybe Athena told him about the gods, or Odysseus is the most educated here, and he knows ancient history better than others.
    Maybe i'm wrong, but since we see Apollo in the God Games song, and since Apollo is one of the gods to whom Troy prayed too, Helios is probably one of the almost forgotten gods, that got Odysseus and his crew into trouble here.

    Let's also not forget that Scylla was a nymph of Circe's and Poseidon turned her into a sea monster as a punishment for Circe.

    8:02 yes, you are completely right, the thing with greeks and their prophecies is that they are self fulfilling. so Poseidon tells him that mercy is the wrong way to do this, the prophet affirms that, and with Different Beast, he becomes "ruthless". There is a common trope with prophecies and greek heroes, where they often they fight the prophecy cause they want the "happy ending" but by doing that they end up fulfilling the prophecy and losing someone to make the prophecy complete. ancient greeks weren't on board with the whole fighting fate and winning deal

    In the future references of Greek mythology yes Apollo is the sun god but in most of the original texts the Sun God's name was Helios and those were his immortal cattle that were a gift to him from Zeus upon the day that he was made an Olympian god

    It's hilarious to me that they were so surprised when Odysseus said from the very first song that there wasn't anything that he wouldn't do to see his son and wife. Like, I know it seems shocking on their end, but he's literally been saying it from the beginning

    I'm just gonna say it Oddy made like one mistake with the cyclops, and the rest was his crew screwing everyone over.
    From opening the wind bag, to getting turned into pigs, to mutinying and literally stabbing him in the back during a duel because he had the audacity to make a choice that would result in the least deaths, and then to top it all off they tried to kill that sacred cow despite his warnings, despite everything they went through because of the sheep..
    Yeah, they deserved to get Zeused when all they had to do to get home at this point was to not do anything stupid for like a week, but instead they knowingly messed with a gods stuff.

      Nah, I disagree. Odysseus made a mistake that was both easily avoidable and got 550 men killed. His crew fell into traps laid by gods. In my opinion, he got his crew into this mess, then made them pay for his mistakes.

    I felt so bad for Odysseus. He didn’t want to sacrifice his men, but he became so desperate, he felt he had no choice. And then he’s warning his men not to slay the cattle, knowing full well these were beloved friends of the sun god and he would have vengeance on them should anything happen. But of course, his men don’t listen (what does Odysseus know? It’s not like he’s angered gods because of choices he’s made and doesn’t want to anger them any further or anything). And because Ody is not just their captain, but their king, their actions are his responsibility, so he has to choose.
    “Captain?”
    “I have to see her.”
    “But we’ll die.”
    “I know.”
    “You’re not the only one who misses his home and families!”
    “Oh I’m sorry, Eurylochus, but how many times have you sang about missing your wife all these years?”

    In ancient myth there are only two types of prophecies, the self fulfilling ones, and the ones that you don't understand until it's too late, this is definitely the former type

  • @ericsanford536

    A very common theme in greek tragedy is that prophecy is never clear but always true and many heroes misinterpret prophecy then cause it to come true by trying to avoid what they THOUGHT it meant.
