I've spent the past 10 years learning Spanish. From knowing literally zero Spanish, to speaking Spanish every single day (plus moving to Mexico and falling in love with a latina), these are the things I wish I had known when I first started learning the language. Thank you for watching, you're awesome :) New videos every Saturday.

👋 Hola, I'm Nate. I used to not know any Spanish at all, and I had no interest in learning the language. I thought learning Spanish would be boring, a waste of time, and would provide no value to my life. Then I started taking Spanish classes in high school and everything changed for me. I struggled with learning the language a lot at first, but thanks to my teachers and my Spanish speaking friends, they helped make the learning process fun. Within a few months, I had gotten to a conversational level, but more important, I had become a more confident person. The real win for me, though, was the friendships I made and strengthened. I discovered that not only did I have higher self esteem, but being out in the real world with people, whether old friends or new ones I met, made me feel more alive and connected with the world around me. Now it's my goal to create videos that make you smile and inspire you to learn Spanish or another language!

I have a B.A. in Spanish that i got in 1993. The key to learning how to speak Spanish is to make sure you never worry about what you have said being "right" or "wrong" just keep speaking and you will never regret it!
Getting mistaken for someone who lives in the country of your target language is such a thrill! When I was in Egypt speaking Arabic, many people thought that I was living/working in Cairo (as a foreigner). In fact, my first time in the Middle East as this short 3-week trip. I was glowing! :-D I even had someone approach me for directions, which I couldn't help out with, but that was a nice ego boost too.
🥹wow Arabic is the other language I hope to learn this is epic

You’re the best Nate. I took Spanish in high school but never took it seriously. Over the pandemic I was actually able to get conversationally fluent and I your channel was a big help in that journey. Really appreciate what you do and sigue así!
Nate really finished Spanish and is waiting for Spanish 2 to come out. I aspire to be like Nate 🙏
Gringo here. I’ve been working on my Spanish for almost 7 years. I love the language and Latin American culture.
Like anything else, learning Spanish is the most difficult and frustrating in the beginning. But if you push through for long enough to have a simple foundation of vocabulary and understanding of the how the grammar works, like maybe intermediate level, it becomes very fun and enjoyable. Studying isn’t usually the fun part, but it’s all well worth it when you get to start using what you know with real people.
Bullshit you don't need grammar, dreaming Spanish works in 600 hours no books no grammar
Thanks, Nate🙌 still motivating me👏
I understood the first part of the question at 6:02. Nate you said “Si tú hubieras nacido en un país de hablas hispana como te redes de español. Como podrías hacer eso desde tu casa.
When you said “hispana” I thought it was spelled like this “espana” like the country “España” lol. But I realized it was “hispana”.
But my responds is, like you’ve taught us “consume a lot of music, and speak to ourselves.”
Just found your page. Very helpful. Good suggestions and stories.
Good information and advice.
Que barbaro! Wild dude! Wild!
Nate, muchas gracias por todo. Me encanta tu canal! Saludos desde Dinamarca!

Thanks for the video
love your videos !❤❤❤
💯 Everything you are saying is the same principles I use for myself, as well I tell EVERYONE this! You must speak, Study and listen everyday! ¡Dale Compa Nate!
Great video with some of the greatest language learning advice I have heard in the last 40 years!! I learned German as a young soldier in the 80s when I was in posted Germany, and learned it fluently without even thinking much about it. It just happened as they say to the point where native speakers would often asked me if I am from around Munich area. Fast forward 40 years and I applied the same concepts and principles when I started learning Spanish a few years ago, but with the Internet it's a game changer. Like you said ego is everything. Now days I speak Spanish every day all day with my Colombian wife and I'm continually asking questions. We never stop learning!
Suerte a todos ;))
I've incidentally been doing all these things in my Spanish learning journey and I totally agree
The mindset shift from “winning” a language to “never stopping a language” (it’s an infinite game, after all!) helped me to really enjoy the day to day cultivation of my español. ¡Gracias por este video!
Great tips :)
¡Hecho!
good advise Nate
Just seen your video with Xaio
Wish I could get lessons from someone like you lol
I'm about to travel to Mexico for the first time to meet my Wife's extended family, and I'm nervous because I know very little Spanish. I've tried learning in the past, but I think due to my Traumatic Brain Injury from my deployment in 2010-2011 it makes it more difficult for me to retain things. Hopefully being in Mexico for a week and a couple days will help me a little bit more.
100 %. You have to be willing to be humbled constantly.
Best way is to watch RUclips videos of topics you are interested and comment them. As native spanish speaker who wants to learn english I agree ego can hold you back.
Hoy aprendi algo nuevo contigo Nate, muchas gracias. Like you've said, we always learn something new, even in our own mother's tongue. Surprisingly though, some of us claim to speak 20 languages. Vampires maybe? 300+ years old?
Símon! Tímon!
I hope I can apply this to ANY LANGUAGE.
God I love this channel.
My issue is that I am generally a quiet individual, preferring not to talk excessively. As I have been learning Spanish through music, RUclips pranks on the street, and the app Busuu, it has not been very helpful for me. Although my listening comprehension has significantly improved, it doesn't assist me when I want to express myself, as I often lack the appropriate words, experiencing something like temporary amnesia in those moments. Moreover, not speaking much makes it challenging for me to engage in conversations, as I've noticed that Spanish speakers tend to be quite talkative, and one must sometimes interrupt them to contribute one's own thoughts; this is based on my personal experience so far.
Today is day one for me. My goal is by August 12th ( My Birthday ) be able to be a bit better than a beginner
I wonder if Nate knows Ana Saia. 🤔
One thing that I’m finding is that all my Spanish-speaking friends here in America try to always speak English! I’m not sure why, maybe because it’s our native language or maybe because they’re embarrassed by the way I talk. It’s a real bummer and frustrating sometimes.
It’s not you …I’m sure they appreciate the effort …it’s just that a lot of people are impatient
It's not embarrassment. Most of the time it's just the issue of not being able to understand what you said. It's easier to just find people who don't speak English fluently and try learning through them.

If you had been born in a Spanish-speaking country, how would you surround yourself with Spanish? How could you do that from home?
nate i would really like it if you give us some free spanish lessons because im a teen at home wanting to learn for free

Funny that everything you said about speaking Spanish can be applied to English and most likely every language.
Bro turned into Robin Williams
Luis Miguel? An old half-Italian singer? :)
This whole video could be applied to learning any language lmao
You do sound Mexican :) Very good "r" rolling, btw
In my experience native Spanish speakers are not that kind to stop everything they are doing to help you speak Spanish. My experience is that they tell you English speak English, or just continue responding in English when you are speaking Spanish.
Go to a different non Spanish speaking country or learn to say solo hablo un poco español y ruso. Then they’ll speak to you in Spanish.
I tell them to humor me and keep speaking Spanish . They can answer in English if they must. Best practice is at the laundromat. Listening to the gossip and asking questions of others.
You met Natanael Cano?? Jealoouusss

There’s some subtly to your Spanish question that I don’t understand. Obviously I’d be familiar with Spanish if I am from a Spanish speaking country hypothetically. EXPLÍCAME NATE

No offence, but there is no way someone would truly mistake you for being Mexican, they were just being nice. Your gringo accent is obvious from miles away. But you can still speak well even with an accent, it's not important at all.
