I think Rich is actually a buckskin! ^^ Duns can be recognized by the iconic stripes on their legs and a stripe down their backs. Buckskins are bays with the cream gene, and a palomino is a chestnut with the cream gene; a black with the cream gene would be a smoky black.
A black horse with the dun gene would be a grulla (or grullo) and would typically be a gray-ish shade of brown with stripes on the legs, while a dun on bay would just be called bay dun and have a more desaturated/mild shade of brown (though this does depend on the horse; a really dark bay horse with the dun gene might look like a normal bay with dun markings. In generally: lighter and more „washed out“ than the horse‘s original coat) with stripes on the legs. Dun on chestnut would make a red dun, which is one of my favorite horse coats! ^^
A dunskin is a buckskin with the dun gene, resulting in a bucksin-like blonde-ish coat, black mane, and dun markings! (stripes on the legs, sometimes a darkened shoulder, stripe down the back), so a bay-based horse with one copy of the cream gene and one or two copies of the dun gene. A dunalino would be a palomino with the dun gene, so a chestnut-based horse with one copy of the cream gene and one or two copies of the dun gene. A grulla (grullo) with the cream gene ontop would make a smoky grulla / grullo, so a black-based horse with one copy of the cream gene and one or two copies of the dun gene (I keep saying one or two copies because while cream does express differently depending on wether a horse is CR/CR or CR/n, dun looks the same no matter wether it‘s D/nd2 or D/D).
and while I’m at it; a cremello is a chestnut-based horse with two copies of the cream gene. Some shades of cremello indeed look very white, but aren’t officially white. Perlinos are bay-based horses with two cream alleles; a black horse with two cream alleles would be a smoky cream.
I’m not actually sure what passes as a white horse and why, but I think it has something to do with a rare gene called dominant white? (not gonna go into nd1 and dilutions like silver, champagne and pearl here, but I don’t think the white mane on the black foals is a glitch. Maybe they’re silver?) Edit: I looked for a site that explains this, and I think this one does it decently (with pictures as examples): www.morgancolors.com/dun.htm
Also sorry for the essay ^^‘
Edit 2: Corrected some minor mistakes I noticed while rereading this after 7 months and rephrased some things.

This is true! Though there are some shades of cremello that look a lot like white horses! From what I’ve heard, white (not cremello) horses only occur as a sort of mutation? I’m not sure about this, but I think maybe it’s a variation of leucisim? Lmk if I’m wrong, just what I’ve heard ^^

  • @RainBeingTired
    @RainBeingTired Год назад +26

From what I was able to understand, the genetics of hidden genes in rival stars works as if the horses were "heterozygotes" for those characteristics. The foal will pick 2 colours from the base and hidden genes of the parents to have it's base colour and hidden gene and that it's random.
Dilution works differently, especially because you can have double dilution, but the basis is the same. The base and hidden genes form a pool from which the foal can pick.
The patterns go the same way as the coat colours, so it will pick from the base and hidden genes from the parents at random.
Hope this helps to understand how the breeding works a little bit better 😅😅

Grey horses with double cream look completely white with blue eyes (very uncommon, one of the best combiation of genes in my opinion), that foal is probably cremello turning grey, for the new dark one with flaxen mane I thought they were supposed to be liver flaxen (added in the mobile game now) but apparently they have a cream gene... I guess it's probably a very sooty dark palomino ( I saw a sooty palomino turning almost black ) and very dark sooty buckskin for the dark mane one, even if rival stars colors are a little messed up ahaha

Hey! A bit late but some IRL gray horse coat info haha:
I'm not 100% on cremello/white coat dilutions, but a gray horse is a horse born with a regular coat colour (bay/chestnut/black etc. gray can even affect horses with skewbald/piebald patterns). As they age they quickly lose the pigmentation resulting in a gray or "white" coat. A young gray horse will be much darker and more "pigmented" than an older gray (who in a lot of cases look almost completely white and washed out). Depending on the horse's base coat they were born with, it can affect the colouration and pattern of the gray (but the type of gray gene they inherit can also affect the pattern). You can get fleabitten grays, rose grays, dapple grays and iron grays. Its a dominant gene, so if they get the gene from either parent, it will show in the offspring. It is possible to breed a gray and not produce a gray, but if both parents have the gray gene, the foal will always be gray. They almost always have black skin and they also have dark coloured eyes too (matching the skin and eyes of their base coat before the pigmentation was lost). White/cremello horses have pink skin, and usually have blue eyes.
count how many times I said gray for bonus points 😂

So if you want to know something, a PURE white horse can most certainly be a BLACK HORSE..
Pure white is just mix of KIT genes W20/W22 that cover the base coat of a horse completely causing it to be losing certain pigments except some red.
The three basic coats is Black, Chestnut, and Bay. Pure Whites are any base coats and dillutions, but have KIT gene that covers it completely white. So it's a normal horse just in disguise as a boo ghost if you want to think of it like that I guess.. LOL

Grey horses are called "grey" because it's greying... like how your hair turns grey when you get old. (The cells in the hairs lose their ability to produce pigment. True white in animals is just the lack of pigmentation, like going over a drawing with an eraser.) All grey horses are born with a normal base color and then gradually start getting more and more white hairs as they age, until they EVENTUALLY are completely white. The only special thing about their greying is that it happens at a younger age, and happens faster (meaning they actually live long enough for it to reach every hair on their body).
Looking up the progress of how the color changes on young grey horses is actually really interesting. They can have several different roan-looking coat variations during the transition phase.
Cremellos and such have a gene that turns their normal pheomelanin pigment (red/brown pigment) into a much lighter "diluted" shade. They're genetically not white because they still have pigment, it's just a very very light type of pigment.

I've been getting super into this game after watching a few of your videos and Steam was *very* confused about it. "We don't know how you'll like this game because you haven't played anything similar." lol. I will say with my breeding I've been getting a lot of fairly standard bays with not much variation from the parents, but I've been keeping it fairly limited since I'm still working through the story and only just reached 10 million so mostly I only breed when I improve my foal stalls or when I get a quest for it.

Grey horse: A grey has darker points to it (darker muzzle, darker knees, dark around eyes, dark inside ears) that’s the like key points to detect a grey
White horse: So a pure white is kinda like an albino. They have all white legs but pink at the bottom where the hoof is, pinkish hooves pink muzzle, almost always blue eyes, pink around eyes which make the blue eyes look red like an albino.
These are just some of the things, doesn’t mean it all applies to ALL grey/whites. I have my horse knowledge in place trust me 😂

White horses do exist, sort of, genetically they don't because genetically white is not a color, it's a non color, so think of it has a blanket that hides the real color. Gray is also like a blanket, but gray foals are born in their base color, so they may be born bay and gray out over time (the fleabit foal would not be born looking like that, it would be colored and gray out overtime). The cream gene that gives you palominos and buckskins is incomplete, so in one does you get a palomino (red based) or a buckskin (bay based), but if you get two doses of cream you get cremello (red based), perlino (bay based), or smokey cream (black based). The thing I would like to see with Rival Stars is for horses to breed more realistically, color wise (and they're genetics be written in normal terms).
Saint is either a gray or a very pale palomino, Angel would most likely be a pinto with an extreme pattern (I'm basing this on the black spots inside her nose, double cream would not have any black pigment), and Marshmallow does look like a cremello. Angel's first foal was a bay (which would rule out cremello) frame overo, which would point to one of her (Angel's) pinto patterns being frame. Endless Battle and Empress look like they are likely be a silver black (that would be the reason for the silver manes). Rich is a buckskin. Splashed I would guesstimate to be a dark buckskin (because Marshmallow is her mom, and bay would not be possible if she is a cremello (in the real world)). Decision almost looks like a Champayne or smokey cream as a foal, but more cremello grown up. Marshmallow would have to be a gray (could still have a cremello base color) in order to give birth to a fleabit gray foal (Song), unless Song is actually an appaloosa and not a fleabit gray. Sarcasm is brown.

How I try to figure out if horses in this game are black or dark bay is I give them dapples. Now I don't know if it's entirely accurate but if the dapples are brown I assume they are dark bay and if they are grey I assume the horse is supposed to be a sun bleached black coat. I think a lot of people assume black horses are bark bay when in reality they just spend all day in the sun. Hope this helps in the future and if I'm somehow getting this completely wrong feel free to correct me! :)

When telling what colour a horse is you look at there nose (muzzle) so that “white” horse is actually a grey because it has a grey muzzle :)

I think Splashed and Empress are smoky black, AKA black base coat with a cream dilution, not bay.

Cremello: white horse or a light golden sort if colour with pink skin around its eyes and nose
Grey: white horse with grey skin they can sometimes have pink skin on their nose.
True white: a completely white horse that can have pink skin. They are very rare. Their actual name is a 'camarillo white horse'
A 'white horse' is called a gray because they can be born any colour and slowly turn white.
Btw Rich is not a bay he would be classed as a buckskin.
Dun: a golden colour with a black mane and tail.
Cream dun: a very pale dun with a black mane and tail.
Buckskin: They look like a dun/cream dun but they have white socks where duns would have brown or black socks.
And what you said was a 'bay paint horse' in the uk would be called a tri-colour and idk what it would be in america.
Skewbald: a brown and white horse
Piebald: a black and white horse
Tri-colour: a horse that is brown white and black.
Bay: brown/light brown/dark brown coat with black mane and tail.
Hope this helped with any confusion about the colours of the horses.

I think Empress was a silver black and Rich was a buckskin? Buckskin vs dun is hard, unless you can see their back for any dorsal striping.

I’m pretty sure that if it is a “bay paint” you would just say paint because that is the pattern but the coat is still bay

There is such thing as a white horse yes (well, nearly), I think it's called the dominant white. Though the dominant white horses will have the pink skin (such as around the eyes, the muzzle, etc).

Also, all the "white" horses are grey except the ones with pink noses, and their called cremellos. All horses have pink skin just like how all humans if you tare off a layer of skin, the next layer will be pink. Like under your fingernails for example.
