Our family has a rule around gift giving at Christmas. thrifted, recycled, homemade or charitable/sustainable gifts only. Has made our Christmas giving season so much cheaper and more meaningful!

We do something similar! Our family is full of artists, so we have to make or give something handmade for Christmas gifts. Then, per person, there's a $30 budget for anything else if you can afford it :)

I love this approach so much. My three housemates and I applied the same rule to a secret Santa we did for each other several years ago, and it was so much ridiculous fun. Since then, I've been so much more inclined to make or at least customise gifts, and it feels so much more joyful and special than the other options for my current financial situation: buying something small or overspending.

I was weirdly wired by my mother to buy no niceties for myself after Halloween because maybe someone wants to buy it as a gift. So around my birthday (in August) I start curating a wishlist and I essentially stop personal fun shopping after Halloween. Then after Christmas I get myself that “one thing” that I didn’t receive as a gift. The reason soooo any people are so “hard to buy for” is because people often buy themselves whatever they want instead of leaving wants on the wishlist.
My other tips for the general holiday season is:
-Decide your Christmas budget in January and save for it all year.
-Have honest conversations with your family and friends about gift giving and the budget so that everyone is on the same page.

Cecile Ganel same. I never bought myself things from Oct-Nov-Dec in case someone had gotten it as a gift, but now I’m still tempted by Sephora sales that I know people won’t buy the specific things , so with other spending it’s ok but I still seem to struggle w makeup and skincare.
I’m low key relieved that all the recent releases are things that don’t interest me in the least ! (Shane Dawson makeup? Tati generic palette? Pass!)

The thing that has helped me THE MOST. Is that I made a spreadsheet containing every category of makeup I own. Primers, concealer, palettes, etc. Beside it I put the date I opened it, then the expiry date. Then I sort them with the soonest to expire at the top of each category.
It allows me to see JUST HOW MANY glosses I have for instance, and have a visual of how many things I have to finish before they expire.

I love this. I'm a big fan of the Vanity function on Temptalia's website: you can add all the products you own along with the dates you acquired and/or opened them; and if there's anything new that you covet, there's a nifty button that searches for dupes in your own collection and shows you the side-by-side swatches. So much fun and SO useful.

It reminds me of how long products last and how many foundations I truly need and also reminds me not to waste money and to research my purchases if possible. One thing I like to do to help me deal with the desire to “try” new things (anytime, but especially during the holidays) is to reframe my thoughts about spending. If there’s a product I really want to try, I ask myself “What am I willing to spend for the experience of trying this product?” That way I’m considering some beauty spending as experience spending, similar to going out to dinner or to a theme park, rather an investing in an item. This may sound like I’d buy more, but it actually has the opposite effect. If I want to try a $40 eyeshadow palette, I rarely think that the experience of trying it is worth $40, so I don’t buy it. I don’t want to know how it works that badly. But if I see it for $20, that might be worth it for the experience of trying it. The good thing here is that usually it doesn’t go on sale for awhile, so I have to wait to find it at a price I’m willing to pay, and often I don’t want it anymore.
This is what I did with ABH subculture. It felt like such a polarizing item on RUclips that I just really wanted to find out for myself what it was all about, but I wasn’t willing to spend $42 to experience it. But I found it for $20 a year later, and was still so intrigued by it that I decided that was worth it, and I actually love it. But this is the exception rather than the rule. Typically I never buy it because the experience isn’t worth the price or the desire wears off. This helps me a lot when I just want new shiny things.

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  5 лет назад +7

I love the idea of re-framing it so that the price is like a theme park ticket for the experience of buying the item and trying it. that's brilliant!

Oh! That's so clever! And setting so much more of a realistic expectation could possibly reduce unwelcome feelings of guilt when a product is finally deemed worthy to purchase (I tend to beat myself up over not using products more, even when I'm very pleased to own and use them, because my collection is sizeable enough that I rarely reach for the same thing daily or even weekly). I'm going to try adopting this thought process. Thank you :)

Sometimes videos that advise on how not to overspend make the fatal flaw of (perhaps unintentionally) simplifying the act of not spending (like just don't admire these things/distance yourself), and don't understand the rush/mentality behind the allure of new products. I love that you do the opposite and really empathize with the situation (by rerouting thw desires towards what we have already) while acknowledging that little child with a lollipop and the sneaky smile who wants you to have everything you shouldn't and assure your own destruction 😂 I am so glad that my makeup no-buy will continue into this holiday season, and almost sad that it will be over soon!

Eva R. It doesn’t have to end🤷🏾‍♀️ you can extend the period and/or carry the same spending habits post no-buy. If fact that’s the point, some people deprive themselves completely for a set period of time and just straight up binge right after, completely defeating the purpose. So whether the actual no-buy time period formally ends or not it really shouldn’t matter I don’t think. U can continue not buying or buying only as u need coz ur consumption habits should’ve changed. u don’t even have to call it a no/low buy, it should just be regular lifestyle. or u could just extend the actual formal no buy period itself if u prefer having actual restrictions. but maybe ur sad about it ending for other reasons than what I mentioned idk🤷🏾‍♀️😌 whatever ur reasons I hope u got what u wanted out of it🤗

The biggest piece of advice that I always give to people who struggle with shopping habits is to do whatever you can to make it impossible for you to buy stuff you can't afford. I got into a few thousand dollars of credit card debt a few years ago, and the first thing I did to get out of it was to give my credit card to my spouse and ask them to keep or hide it. I have yet to ask for it back cause it's been so good for me.
I filmed a video on this a while ago and never posted it, but I think there is a great deal to be said for the amount of shame and self-judgment-in the world in general, but particularly around shopping-actually giving rise to more of the behaviors we want to avoid. Such that if someone is trying to control their shopping because they feel bad about themselves, doing so doesn't generate positive feelings, just negative ones. Self-control is a depletable resource, and constantly fighting negative feelings depletes that resource (or drives us to another coping mechanism). So many of us have so many deep-seated hangups around it that trying to mentally control ourselves can lead us to generate more friction and thus create a real cycle when we break down.
For me, I have to take the approach of "automating" it. i.e., it is not possible for me to put purchases on a credit card. Since it's not possible, I don't spend brain energy thinking about it. I don't have to make a decision or try to control myself. I just can't do it. So I get to use that self-control/brain energy for other things. For a long time, I felt like taking this approach made me a failure because I wasn't able to mentally "overcome the temptation." But there's nothing wrong with setting up systems that block you from doing a destructive thing. Setting yourself up for success is also success.
Oh! And then the most important prevention method is to be gentle with oneself and forgive oneself if you make an impulse purchase or overspend. And to physically and mentally take care of oneself. ^_^
Thanks for this video, Hannah! I hope the conversation keeps going through the holidays.

"It's so amazing, and it's so dumb, and it's so dumb and amazing..."
    - what I think to myself every time I'm browsing for new makeup that I don't need and know I'll probably never use but feel like I have to have
But overall I think what triggers my spending the most is the idea of the elusive, "perfect" curated collection of all the "best" possible holy grail products, which will somehow significantly improve my life. In my attempt to own fewer nicer things, I became neurotic and obsessed with finding the perfect products, which ironically lead me to spend far more money than I ever have on makeup.

As a more analytical/less creative person, I like to keep an inventory of my makeup in Excel and track the values and my % use of products. When I want to but a new blush or lipstick or whatever, I go filter for that category and see how much I have that is pretty much the same and how much I still have to use up. Works (almost) every time, and really reminds me of a less creative version of your first two tips!! My strategy is: Do the math
Last year, I came up with and posted my realization that I could realistically only use each lip product I owned 7 times in a year if I wanted to use them all equally. This prompted a new strategy for me.
The question is simply: **“which product would I be willing to wear less in order to wear any new product I’m thinking of buying?”**
A year has a finite number of days. In a year I only wear makeup for a portion of it which means that if I divide my number of product with 365, I get an inflated number... That absolutely means that I wouldn’t even have 7 wears per lipstick if I want to wear them equally. I highly suggest doing at least the 365 day math. But I’ve then gone on to actually calculate how many days I expect to be wearing makeup and what that means for my number of wears for each item.
I highly recommend going through all makeup categories and calculating number of wears/year in each category.
After doing this I have come to the conclusion that there are some things I would rather declutter to increase the number of wears I can get out of other products in the same category that I like more. I also noticed that there are some categories where I simply have to go on a NO buy or else I won’t get to use what I have even remotely enough times to be happy with my choices.
This particularly applies to holiday sets. There is no way I can justify getting the Fenty gloss set. I would have to declutter 5 items if I wanted to keep my number of wears the same and there simply isn’t 5 things I want to part with at the moment.

    Another great video Hannah!
One thing I do re makeup playtime: instead of putting it on my face which I really can’t get jazzed about, I will pull out my palettes/ or lippies/ blushes/ highlighters etc and swatch, compare, contrast, and just reap the joy I feel when something swatches so beautifully. It reminds me I have more than enough.
Another tip I do when I’m trying to rein it in, is tell myself if I want something that I don’t need, I will need to sell something to cover the cost. So not only will I need to identify one or more things that I don’t value as much as the new thing, I’m making up the funds and actively preventing my stash from growing.
The next thing I do which is especially helpful with lip products and eyeshadow, is to always visit Temptalia before ordering anything. I look up the lip product, check all the dupes, and 95% of the time have an exact dupe in my collection, so I pass. With shadows I will identify which shades in the palette I’m excited about using, then check dupes and may find out I can dupe the vibes completely or could just as easily get a $5 single of a coveted shade. One great example is last years gingerbread and this years Huda nudes . All of those I had in their entirety in my collection. Pass! (There’s also a vanity feature which makes the process even easier, but with the sheer size of my shade I find it easier to check on a case by case basis)
The last thing I do to help myself with the urge to online shop, is I will go to the retailer, take a loooong time looking at everything, even put things in my cart. I usually fall asleep before I even finish, and I have to wait until the next day to order. Usually by the next day I’ve either forgotten about it completely or the interest has waned.

I decided no more then 100 a month, but I’ve also said because their is 100 dollars doesn’t mean I need to use it all. I love your comment about imaging the long term life of each item in a set. I think a RUclips culture of decluttering can often lead us to buy these huge Sephora sets (or any others) thinking that we’ll just declutter what we don’t use, but I always have to remind myself that I should never buy with the idea that I’m going to declutter! I love good declutter videos, but I think ones that are not done as well (usually the more clickbait-y ones, “getting rid of 80% of my palettes” or whatever) don’t encourage thoughtful and mindful spending, which can then lead to habits of overspending. The holiday items really play into this-the “buy to try” mentality. I’ve had to really work to shift my mindset from “buy to try” to “buy to love” and if I don’t think I’ll love something long term, I don’t buy it yet and spend more time doing my research to decide if it’s something I really will use.
So I guess my additional tip, an extension of imagining the long term life of each product, is that if you cannot decide how that product will work for you, pause and do some extensive research. That doesn’t mean I can’t buy it later, but that I need more information. Basically it all comes down to what you’ve been saying all along-put some time and information between you and the product and see if the desire is still there, or if it was really just the mystery and newness that was enticing you.
    Love this video!!!!!!

I am watching this months before Black Friday in 2020. Love your videos. I regularly reorganize my makeup and it makes a big difference. I also do makeup playtime a few nights a week before I wash my makeup off at night and it keeps me feeling artsy and enjoying my more neglected shades in my eyeshadow palettes. I also regularly take clothes out of my closet and only keep a small collection for a few weeks to help me envision new pairings with what I have and it’s so much fun. I do that 6-8x a year minimum and it really makes me excited to open my closet. And I do already have a small collection compared to others and it still works great with my small closet collection!

My little trick to curb my spending and to use what I already have is, every time I wash my makeup brushes I get to shop my stash. That way around the two to three week mark when I'm really wanting to switch things out I know I have to wash my brushes in order to shop my stash. If I picked a few things I don't care for, I'll wash my brushes at the one week mark. That way I'm forced to give it a chance for at least a week. Then I'll go ahead and pass it on. Yes yes yes! To all of it!
My tip, especially for those of you (us) that really don't have much money, is to shop less overall for the holidays. Commit to making gifts for people. I'm not the craftiest person but I often make give out tins of cookies or I make paintings for people. Or I just try to be really intentional about my shopping. I try to come up with one thing, not usually something expensive and usually something I can get secondhand honestly, that I know the person will love. It keeps me from going out and browsing and giving into buying all the overpriced holiday stuff that I didn't know existed until I saw it on a shelf. Last year I got my mom a used copy of a book that I know she's wanted for a long time and she loved it. I'm not sure I'm making any sense, it's early for me haha. But my point is that if you're really intentional about gift making/buying, you end up in less shopping situations and you're less tempted. (Also, just make a list of the things you want to get people and then don't get anything not on the list, it helps from overspending on gifts and on yourself)

When you talked about getting all your make up (or skincare in my case) out to shop your stash the idea came to me: why don’t I take a picture of it all and make it the screensaver on my phone? I’m going to do it - first it will put me off buying more, especially if I make it all look jumbled and cluttered. Second it will make me want to use it all and get my money’s worth. Third, “the thing” is a lot more attractive when featured alone with the mystery of it being“special’ it’s hard for each item to seem appealing when sitting with lots of other stuff! Plus every time I look at my phone I’m going to want to use that stuff.

Denise Phillips This is genius! The idea of taking a picture of your skincare or makeup all cluttered really made me not want to buy anymore, and the thought of on top of it adding something else made me feel reluctant to do it. Because it’s true, our beautiful skincare ends up looking like clutter when you have too much.

      @Denise-ki9ii 5 лет назад +4

Claudia Castillo yes, and I have way too much skincare - 80% hasn’t even been opened. I have made a spreadsheet to start using it up. To offset the fear of forgetting something wonderful (I reckon I have about 2 years of face creams alone) I am adding notes saying if I would buy again once I have used more stuff up! Ugh I'm going to have to rewatch this everyday until black friday. I started making a BF list of things I want to buy. There were 20 items! But then I snapped out of it and I talked myself into condensing to things I truly need. Yes the list is at 10 but I've split the list up into 3 tier priority. With some parameters: I have nothing in my collection to replace them. And if the item is not at 40% off or more I am not buying it. Mostly because Ulta will grace us with 20% coupons every month. I know it sounds exaggerated but it's the lack of preparation that leaves me broke but new years.

I’m planning on being really thoughtful on what I buy for others, not buying things that’ll just get thrown out after Christmas or never used. This is especially helpful as I’m on a uni budget and can not afford to buy lots of things. I’m also being really picky about who I’m buying for.

I was just thinking the other day that I am going to get through the holiday shopping experience without buying for myself. If I want something in the moment, I will put it on a list and let it sit! I recently listened to a podcast that said putting money in savings or paying down debt is paying for peace of mind. I will never not think of that now. Financial Peace of mind is SO. IMPORTANT. TO ME.

one thing I have done over the recent years to help curb my impulse buying of things across sectors is utilize my phone to take photos of things I "happen" across that I really want. I take a picture and tell myself I can always come back and get it or search for it later online for a better price or whatever. It helps release the "hold" of the thoughts of wanting it and keeping it in the front of my mind like a craving. I reason I can flip thru my phone later and remember what "treasures" I want. The thing is 1. I often forget about the photos I took or 2. when I go back to look at them a few days later the craving for them has past ( much like you mention) , so I promptly delete the pics and never think about them again and in the process save myself some money , space and guilt.

It's funny, because I saw the news about the Sephora sale earlier today, so I got my online cart ready to see what I was willing to spend. It was under $200 so it wasn't as much as other times I've spent during sales, but as I was watching this, I was actually thinking, "yeah, Hannah's right, I don't need to get all this right away..." and got rid of a few items in the cart. Now, it's at $38, and it's one product I need for the winter months and one product I've had my eye on for the last four months. Think I'm going to watch it again right now to clear out my ColourPop cart. lol

I started planning the palettes I want a few weeks ago. I have a firm budget in mind. The budget can be spent between Oct and Dec. Of course I can spend less. Most of the purchases are things I've been considering since before the No Buy. My husband is def my fail safe. I feel really good about my plan.

Waiting for a sale has actually helped me curb my shopping a lot in the past year, especially with how many coupons Ulta comes out with. If there is an item I want, but I don't need it right away, I know eventually I can get it on sale or with a coupon or with bonus points. And that waiting also helps with whittling down my wish list items over time.

I can offer some tips! 🙋🏽‍♀️😸
    1. If you haven't already, *depot everything*. Spend your money on empty palettes and tools instead. If you ever feel something desperately tugging on your heart strings, compare it to your existing collection. Dupe the vibes. Wear your curated palette for a week. Missing a color? This brings me to...
    2. Make a makeup shopping list. In John Maclean's brilliant video on building a budget makeup collection, he implores: "You don't need the newest thing... Or the coolest thing. Choose exactly what you need to make the looks that _you_ want." If you're still missing a color or a tool when you dupe the vibes of whatever you're lusting after, find a single shadow/cream pencil/that tool online, put it on your wishlist, and if you find yourself reaching for it after a month, get it. Good single shadows will be in permanent collections.
    3. Appealing packaging? Put something beautiful and permanent on your wishlist instead. For example, I am in love with the packaging for the Melt Cosmetics holiday/día de los muertos collection. However, I know that I will not use all of the shadows in the palettes. So! Instead I am seeking out genuine handcrafted ceramic Calaveras ("sugar skulls") off of Etsy. Or waiting until my upcoming trip to South Texas. A ceramic decoration will not go bad in two years. And I get to support a small local artisan. Beautiful lipstick/pressed powder packaging? Find a vintage lipstick case or mirror in a similar style, then fill it with a Lush refill or a large single pan of what you want. :)
    4. Mix your own colors. This is especially true with lipsticks. When I see a lip color that looks gorgeous on whoever I'm looking at, I try to dupe it with combining my various lip pencils, lip sticks, balms and glosses. I can usually achieve a similar effect to what I see with a little bit of experimentation. Especially good when you're trying to achieve that particular shade of nude. Also useful for liquid vs powder highlighters! Mix a little powder highlight into your primer, foundation, moisturizer, or blush and see how you can get different effects.
    5. Re-watch Hannah's ASMR hot tea video. 😂🍵🔥 Yes, those things are all really the same. 😁 Just slightly tweaked formulas and different packaging.

The helium Hannah busts me up......I see you over there "prawn"! Sharing how I have figured out how to navigate the holidays, starting with, 20+ years ago, my immediate family decided we would no longer exchange Christmas gifts. Due to finances can be different, one person gives expensive gifts and someone else cannot afford much, so with that we collectively took the pressure off of ourselves. The gift to each other is spending time together over the holiday season and in the future of the year. It is nice to gather and not have all the anxiety of "is my gift good enough". Moving on from that, more recently practiced is that I do not participate with "secret Santa" at work. Then I make a list of who I think I need to buy gifts for at Christmas and really start doing the math, then I meditate about it and then start downsizing it. Also, I no longer get caught up in I need to have a tree, lights, make fudge, send cards etc. I decorate my home for the "winter season", I send cards out by the end of January for Happy New Year, and make and bottle homemade Kahlua. What I have observed has evolved is I have found myself having more forethought for the Holidays and Birthdays and actually start purchasing gifts ahead of time. Your entire #7 is perfect! I completely believe in waiting it out for the sale and often whatever it was, ends up being something I don't want after all. You are the best!

I've also used this method of moving things around my makeup collection and it really does help! It gives it a bit of a refresh every time I do it. Also, I got crafty these days and managed to make some Z palettes for myself out of some picture frames and I depotted most of my singles, blushes, blush toppers, highlighters, eyeshadows, all that good stuff, and I LOVE seeing all of these categories organised altogether, it makes me wanna try all the stuff I own! I figured if, in stores, the makeup is curated and arranged in such a manner that catches the eye, creating some custom-able palettes has the same effect for me. I remember when I first started watching Lisa Eldridge's videos and she once showcased her makeup organizer, it looked like a damn book and I was in awe! I love the whole idea of creating a neat "family" for all makeup products to get yourself re-inspired by

Something that has helped me is getting into lowering my waste. Every time I make a purchase I really analyze the product and decide if it is something that I will use up. Clearly there are times I make exceptions otherwise I probably wouldn't own any eyeshadow palettes but it makes my purchases more practical and thoughtful. I mainly purchase staple products and things that really really catch my eye. Like with eyeshadow palettes specifically I always want to be able to use 75% of the palette or more with the shade range and I'm a pretty neutral person so that eliminates a lot of releases. I also look to use my Sephora points on things that are staples that take me forever to use up like ABH clear brow gel and stuff like that which helps my budget out. I probably spend too much on skincare and foundations though because I can pretty much always use those up and justify those purchases haha

There is one thing I do that may also be useful for others: I plan the splurge! :D
Where I live there are -20% on everything in two big beauty stores on the Black Friday. So, starting in late summer, I save up everything I need to restock and/or consider trying for late November (only if I am not running on full zero, then I will re-buy earlier).
I especially save up things that are never or almost never on sale (e.g. my all-favourite face powder is every so often on 30+% sale, so I do not consider it for my Black Friday bulk buy, but my favourite foundation is not, so I will restock it during the sale). I plan to restock for a maximum of a year (e.g. max 3 eyebrow pencils, max 2 foundations etc. - less, if I have some spare stuff already at home in a given category), and focus on my holy grails/staple products that I know I like and will repurchase anyway. I also decide on all presents in October or so, and add all the beauty presents to my wish list and wait till the -20% day comes.
Great thing about it: there are a lot of things I lose interest in before late November so I remove it from my wish list. I also plan for presents in advance and really buy things the people will like, and that are within my budget. I always do it online: I am not tempted with whatever is in stores and catch my eyes. But also, I hate hate hate crowds in stores, so it spares me the experience of late Christmas shopping. I do the present shopping once, so it saves me time and saves me temptations. Last but not least, since I DO actually buy something, it satiates the need to buy - it doesn't matter that I buy my staple products I would repurchase anyway, the brain gets its kick and is happy.

I’m not going to allow myself to buy anything “on sale.”. Now, during the holidays everything is “on sale”, so before I buy something I’m going to ask if I would buy it at regular price and then donate the difference to a charity. So for example if an item is $100 and I can get it 40% off, I will then (immediately after the shopping trip), go online and donate $40 to a charity. So in essence I’m not saving any money, I’m still paying $100, but my desire to buy will at least be lessened (I only have so much $ in my account,) and then I’ll be doing something good.

I love shopping for gifts, for others, and of course, myself 😂 I start Xmas shopping in September because I purchase one or two gifts with each pay cheque. When I see something I want for myself, I take a pic and add to my own wish list. Then, I review this list every couple of weeks to see if I still want that item. Usually, I’m thinking wow that was a cool item but I’m not sure if I still want it. I think about the “future of the item”. Will I still want it in my house after 3 months, 6 months, a year? After serious decluttering, I really think about what comes into my house. Setting a budget for the rest of the year for my own personal purchases is a brilliant idea! I’ll be doing that! Thank you, Hannah!

Ones of my problems has been to not make a list of whom I'm buying for or what I'll get them. So I'll buy two or three Sephora Favorites (as an example) telling myself they'll make great gifts, but lo and behold, Christmas ends and there was no one to give them to. Guess I'll have to keep them! So this year I'm planning a very specific list of people I'll be gifting and the kind of thing I'm looking for.

Our biggest thing is "Don't go into debt to give gifts." We budget and save monthly and have an individual budget for each person (we use a spreadsheet to keep track of ideas, actual money spent, etc. too). It works well for us. If there's something we really want, we take it out of the "from the spouse" budget... and they have to agree since it's spending money we allocated to spend on each other!

  • @princessses2892
    @princessses2892 5 лет назад

I genuinely feel like you care about other people’s finances and that’s rare, most videos I watch even if it is about saving money feels like it’s made to make content... for money.
My tip when I’m a bit broke and want to save money is I write down everything I would buy if I had the funds and revisit it in a week, a month etc, some stuff is wanting for wanting sake, some is lower down in my priorities, others maybe I could ask for as a present. Sometimes there’s clothing on the list, so I try it on in store, like there was a skirt and it was sold out everywhere and I wanted it for a couple of months and then I found it in my size and told myself if I love it I will buy it, but it was unflattering and it went straight off list. If there’s something I really want and it stays at the front of my mind for a few weeks, then I usually buy it, only because I will keep wanting it until I do. Sometimes I want stuff I don’t really need but if I know I will cherish it and I feel that strongly for a sustained period, then I will usually buy it.

The First way you mentioned ( The Amazing & Dumb method ) is what I do all the time with everything in the house from my vanity to the kitchen 😂
I always have to change & rotate things to convince my self not to buy A & B because I have similar things to them & they do similar jobs to them !
And also doing that is refreshing everytime!
I was craving a neutral taupe-y shadows in both finishes matt & shimmer , and I didn't want to buy because I have a neutral shadow would give me the same VIBES as you always say , same thing with craving mideum deep lilac purple ( with matt finish only ) I can get the vibes too but for both situations I realized; I'M NOT SATISFIED! !
I'll pick Looxie Taupe 101& I think colourpop TRY ME ! ( The names tho , the names alone are the VIBES ) 😂😂😂
Btw , I'm Muslim & obviously we don't celebrate Christmas (duh!) So I don't get stressed about shopping for GIFTS !
But I get stressed about what GIFT I can buy for my self ( 19th December is my birthday ) 😂 all the sets & the minis always gets me SPECIALLY if all the products I want to try !

Whenever I feel the need to buy sth expensive I think about similar products I already own. Like I want one special eyeshadow palette but I own one from the same brand or with comparable colors. Then I set myself the goal to finish at least one pan til the next bigger sale like black friday. If I really want that new thing I have to work through sth I have... one of my “tips” is asking if i have a necessity that i need to buy/save up my money for. for example, i really want to replace my lunch bag (wow, much mundane, very adult life) and i want to get one that’s eco friendly/sustainable/ethically made/etc. and sometimes they can be expensive (like $50!). yeah that eyeshadow palette that costs around the same would be nice to have, but it’s more practical and logical for me to put that money towards something that i know i’ll use everyday, even tho it’s not as pretty or exciting as makeup 🤷🏻‍♀️ but newsflash: that’s life!

Last year I bought a set from urban decay for 130 sek (around 13 dollars including 25% tax). It was a small eyeshadow primer, full size mascara, full size eyeliner pencil and the small setting spray. That’s the price for the setting spray that I would have bought anyway, and I will use the rest. Definitely a good set.

For about three years now I’ve been using the app Stylebook. It was a bit of a beast to set up entirely with my abundant wardrobe but it’s been brilliant for keeping me honest about what I do and do not wear. Recently I’ve started to create looks for the week on the app (consulting the weather and daily obligations) and put each day on it’s own hanger, including any accessories. The night before I then lay out a harmonizing eyeshadow palette. In the mornings I’m frequently rushed and end up doing my makeup before I get dressed. I was then trying to locate clothes that went with my makeup which was frustrating and I frequently lost time or interest in trying to sort through my accessories to go with both makeup and my slapdash outfit. My mornings are now much smoother and I think I’m looking more polished. The bonus is I’m feeling less like I need or want anything new since I’m really getting more full use with what I already own.

Oof, this is something i definitely need to start thinking about now. My birthday is in early November, and invariably this is what happens: I decide to “treat myself” “because it’s my birthday!!” and do that thing where I pretend I’m a rich lady and money is no object. And then that feels SO good (temporarily) that it awakens the Purchasing Monster and I just keep on rolling with it throughout gift shopping season and into January (worst of all, midway through it I run out of spending money and start pulling from my personal “fun money” savings, which makes me feel guilty, which makes me soothe the guilty feelings with... more shopping 😩) This has been getting better now that I’m aware of it, but this season I’m gonna get real IntentionalTM about it.
I’ve been on a pre-birthday no-buy month at my husband’s request, solely so that he can gift shop for me without worrying that I’ll buy myself whatever he’s gotten (this has happened several times, haha) and the Monster has fallen dormant - and I wanna keep it that way.

I want some holiday sets just to try the products like mascaras, but I'm gonna wait to get the sets in a sale after the holidays. It's not that urgent to get a punch of minis to my house 😅

You aren't squashing the child, you're parenting the child by setting limits & promoting more comfort with delayed gratification

To really enjoy the holiday season, I think not having to do the last minute shopping etc. is what helps me. I aim to be ''done'' with Christmas shopping and diy by the end of November, so I can actually relax in December on the days off and not frantically sweat in overcrowded shopping malls on weekends/afternoons leading up to the holidays.
