We are an elderly couple who has been downsizing so that our youngest son and his wife can move into the lower level of our 2-story house when they marry soon. I found that we have "magic closets", as when we dragged everything out of downstairs cupboards and closets, our dining room and other parts of the house looked like a hoarder house! Got rid of lots of stuff, but not as much as you - although some bigger items. To begin decluttering, I watched three episodes of "Hoarders" - on different days. Couldn't handle three at once! That's all it took for me to start ripping through our home!
Watching Hoarders is great motivation! I do that regularly. I got through all cabinets/closets regularly to keep from getting overwhelmed. It keeps me from wanting to bring more stuff in and make sure we use items before they expire.
I’m so funny when I declutter. I wrap the breakables in paper or bubble wrap, I had a sheet set and I folded it, bagged it up and labeled what size it was…I had some 2-piece clothing items and put those together in a separate bag so they stayed together, I fold all the clothes with the size tags visible and try to group like-items together … hoping my efforts make it easier for those at the donation centers when they’re going thru everything. 🙏
My family of 6 is in the transition of moving (moved out of our house to sell but haven't bought the next place yet) and are staying at my parents house. We downsized about 85% of our items. My parents were shocked by how much stuff we were willing to get rid of, how little we needed to function well, and how little space we took up in their house 😂
My bestfriend and I are actually doing a 1000 item declutter challenge right now. Whoever hits 1000 first wins dinner from the loser. But we both win because our homes will be decluttered. We are really enjoying it. I saw this video and clicked so fast lol.
Tho I've already posted regarding the declutter, I wanted to add this regarding rattlesnakes. Along with most of the western states, Colorado has 4 sizeable wildfires. One in particular is in very difficult terrain. The temperatures have been in the high 90's or 100. Not only are these brave men and women fighting fires and doing everything possible to saves homes and lives, they are dealing with an area heavy with rattlesnakes. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. ❤
My favorite part of this video as someone in a larger body-even people in smaller bodies like yourself have held on to clothes that don’t fit. Our bodies aren’t to blame! Clothing just doesn’t doesn’t always fit.
Amen on the hangers. You are the first person I have seen/met/etc that don't like the thin velvet hangers. I hate them. I also think they help you keep more clothes than you need. I always thought you don't need different hangers, you need to declutter the clothes. Thought I was the only one!!
plastic hangers dont work for me. I am too hard on them, they break. I use wooden ones. but them I have less than 10 items hanging and they need a culling. all my clothes fit in 6 drawers , only coats are hung. I am not a minimalist by any means but I do consider if the item is paying rent.
It’s the putting the clothes on the velvet hanger that is so difficult for me. It takes forever to adjust the shirt so it lays properly. I do have a few for items that don’t stay on the plastic ones, but I mostly have plastic.
Love this…have been living quite minimally for years but it’s an ongoing process for sure. Things seem to accumulate. You outgrow things. Get gifts. Taste changes. A challenge like this makes maintaining your spaces more fun!
I decluttered 1000 items in 1 week in July. Did my daughter count every crayon and piece of paper she looked through? Absolutely!😂 It is a tough challenge but a great way to push ourselves.
Just a note about the "peach fuzz scrapers". They are meant to be used once and disposed of. They can create tiny micro-cuts in your skin and can carry bacteria if used multiple times. That's why they come with 3. Use it and then dispose if it and move to the next one. 😊
Those hangers are a steal at Walmart! They were $10 for 30 hangers the other day! They were out of the color I had bought when I ran out a few days ago, so I had to order a box of 50 for around $15. They are Better Homes and Garden Brand. Hoping I will have enough to finish the kids’ closets. I did keep some of the plastic hangers because they work better for my husband’s work uniforms and I kept some big wooden hangers for heavy coats. But our closet is on its way to looking amazing! If only he would cooperated and take down stuff to the building!
Yeah , me too. I’m a XL and so many tops and dresses are wide -necked and I love that I don’t find my clothes dangling by one shoulder or on the floor!
I most definitely need to declutter 1,000+ items from inside my house, but...baby steps. I'm going to challenge myself to toss or donate 150 items in the next 10 days. Thanks for the inspiration! 😊 I'll keep you posted.
Christine! I was inspired by this video to declutter in my house and almost got rid of some pretty necessary stuff. Following these recent declutter videos I’d love to see one where you discuss stuff you’ll never get rid of and why. I think you’d have some great insight into functional items and maybe even tips on consolidating if you have multiples of things.
Over the last week I re-organized my (sizeable!) pantries. I hadn't done so since I moved here almost 5 years ago. OOOH, the things I found. That led to going through my ridiculous baking pans collection. I had things I didn't even remember having, and I had already gotten rid of lots when I moved. Goodwill is in for a fabulous haul! Then I decided it was time to go through my "gift/Christmas stash" I keep for my 3 great granddaughters. All I can say is "OH MY", I don't think I need to do any Christmas shopping this year!! Next, a stand-up and a chest freezer, tho I did find a ham I was sure I had when I started with the chest freezer. Now I actually know what I've got and, again, my grocery budget thanks me very, very much!! Doubt I hit a thousand, but I definitely made dents all around!
As my youngest just got her license this week, I decluttered our various 'student driver' magnetic car strips. I will NOT miss those! Also decluttered my old car as I transitioned to a new one. I thought I kept it pretty clean but there were some small odds and end and much more old, out-of-date paper work in the glove box than I imagined. If you're itching to declutter but can't pick a spot, do the car, even if you don't think there's anything in there!
I love decluttering, but I am an empty nester and did the swedish death clean so I have a hard time rounding up loads of stuff anymore. When my kids were home, somehow we had SO much stuff!
I see you decluttering and all my brain thinks is, I would save alot of those things for my children when they move out 😅. Blankets old towels dishes I pass on for first apartments.
When my MIL moved out of her home and in with my SIL she came by with trunk loads of stuff and told me to go through and keep what we wanted but feel free to donate anything we weren’t interested in. We kept some sentimental items (Pyrex Bowls my husband remembered eating popcorn out of, etc) but a large majority of it was duplicates of items we already had. It was kind of eye opening. I think we save things thinking others may want them and it makes us feel better about holding on to stuff but at the end of the day it is better to declutter than keep stuff in case they want it.
Ive been decluttering my bedroom closet, dresser drawers, kitchen items, my car, and so on, and it makes me happy and im not overwhelmed. Getting ready to move out of a stressful relationship, so i have less to pack and move.
We moved to a smaller property and had to put a lot of stuff into storage. I’m excited that tomorrow we are going to do our first big storage purge for selling and donation, with the goal of getting rid of the unit entirely!
I like to declutter with people decluttering so during this video I decluttered 50 items and cleaned and organised a bedroom cupboard. I watched this more then once. 😂😂😂
I'm moving and took to this house what I thought was minimum. Well I just finished the purge and pack and it's amazing what 5 years can do to change your priorities! Best of all I feel lighter physically and emotionally for my minimal choices
You have inspired me to do this challenge! Thank you! I needed this right now...I became a minimalist (Thank you to The minimal Mom Dawn) 2 years ago. Over the past few months I have been "gifted" bags of clothes and household items from clients and instead of sticking to my "find a home and use in a week or it goes away", I have been guilty of letting things pile up and It has been driving me crazy, but not enough to motivate me to deal with the clutter. I just got back from a week of visiting family friends in Minnesota and after staying in the uncluttered guest cabin, I realize how terrible I was being to myself with all of this "new" clutter I just acquired. So in conclusion, Thank You Thank You Thank You!!
I like plastic hangers too! I've also NEVER understood the "need" for multiple swimsuits. I own 1. If I replace it then the current one goes. That's not a judgment on you or others - clearly I am the weirdo...
We have a metal cylinder first aid kit (we've had it for years and keep big tweezers and medical scissors in it). I opened it up yesterday and found two little bags with sample sizes of antibiotic cream, itch cream, etc. and when I looked at the expiration dates...all in 2002!!! Oh my...I had forgotten they were even in there. Sooo-trash! LOL
Thanks for the honest opinion on the velvet hangars. I've been thinking of switching but I also wear almost all t shirts. Think I'll stick with my plastic ones. Money saved!
I decluttered alot this summer, for me. I emptied a cabinet where I kept tablecloths, table runners, dinner napkins, fancy table dishware stuff. I have had this for years, all from garage sales but I never used them! I have one set of bandana kerchiefs that I use as our daily napkins. They are indestructible and easy to wash. One set of table mats. All else got donated.
This was very inspiring. I was feeling overwhelmed with out clutter. I decluttered at least 200 items after watching this. I’m just going to sort to see what I can see or just donate. My house feels better and it also gave me motivation to do a no spend challenge to not bring in my stuff I don’t need.
How do you decide what to keep/ throw away when it comes to clothes, shoes and children items when you’re in your stage of life of building your family? I have a daughter who’s 20 months old and I am due with my second in April 2025. I’ve been on a purging and organizing journey but now I feel like I have to put it on hold while my body is constantly changing and adding another baby to our family. Love your videos! ❤️
I'm on a decluttering journey. Trying to empty the basement so we can finish it. The last thing I decluttered though was all of the clothes I won't miss from my closet (down 45 lbs!).
I’m just now watching this because I knew it would motivate and trigger me😂. We had a house fire over a year ago and a lot (17 years worth) of stuff was kinda saved, but it’s hard to go through it. We did figure out very quickly that everything is replaceable. We all got out and were ok but it’s hard. I’m down to the last 15-20 boxes in the garage and about 25 garbage bags. We have to sift through stuff because we have been lucky finding random baby pictures and my grandmas sweater and a cookbook I’ve had since jr high. You made me giggle as I was going through stuff. Thank you❤
I have been trying to declutter my house as well. I moved into my current home with my sister and our Mother about 12 yrs ago. It is a 2 story 5/3 3500 sqft home for just me now that my Mom and my sister have passed away. I am having to get rid of some of my Mom's stuff we didn't get rid of after she died and also my sister's stuff and she liked to collect things. My goal is to move into a smaller home everything must go. I am retired so I have already boxed up about 2 closets worth of clothes that are mostly too small and were my "work" clothes or my sister's clothes I can't wear. I kept a few pieces but the rest is in boxes and bags waiting to take to the donation. I have several suitcases and bags I am donating to the foster system as they often have kids show up with all their things in trash bags. My sister liked to do crafts so I have beads and jewelry making things and a lot of craft ribbon and such.I used to like to knit and crochet but the arthritis in my hands it too bad to do that now so I have boxes of yarn to go as well. I asked the public library (which I frequent) if they wanted it and they said they would take it all including a bunch of books they will sell at their book fair to raise money for the library. I bought some really nice glass food storage containers and am tossing several boxes of the cheap plastic containers I have collected over the years. I have a long way to go but it feels good to pare things down.
If you have cotton clothes that have shrunk, you can run it through the washer than soak it in water with some hair conditioner for an hour and stretch them back out, squeeze out a bit of the water, and dry flat on a towel
Great job 👏 I decluttered 120 magazines & aprons all going tomorrow. I’ve decluttered 580 so far this year. My goal is 2024😊❤😊 can’t 4get 10 rags I’m taking to Humane Society next week when my kitten is getting neutered
I have been decluttering at least one item a day since January 1st of this year. 1000 items in such a short time is amazing! Last thing I decluttered yesterday was a shirt I never wear (don’t have my item for today yet, waiting for someone to pick it up 😊).
The ukulele 😮-at 107 degrees the dang snakes & scorpions have been rampart!! Stay safe! I signed up for the 5 items/ day for the year & regret it!! I’d rather do it in a week like this!! 1,825 items gone by Dec 31! Loved the video 🎉🎉
Oh My G'Ness....... thank you. I have wondered why I was the only one on the planet that hated velvet hangers, and love my plastic one's! Like you, my clothes stuck to the velvet hangers wrong and didn't help them!
Hey Christine you’re inspiring me to go through the house and get rid of 1000 items I don’t use cloth hangers. I only use the plastic hangers and definitely no wire hangers.
Interesting! It would probably be better if you can find someone to give things to or figure out how to repurpose things since donation centers are so unreliable these days
Last things i decluttered were my son's clothes, and now i have to do it again because over the summer he grew another size.... So all the long pants and t-shirts i was saving for fall.... have to go
I just woke up still in bed and put this video in my tv. Just going through my side table and purse which are within my arms reach I got rid of 16 items. All trash and mostly small but 16 things is a lot when you put it all together. Once I get up I’m going to look for more stuff. Thanks for the motivation. Enjoy the day.
This was really cool to watch. Thx for making it. I often think it would be interesting to see someone tally how much comes in the house over a few months? So many RUclips declutters but the cheap shopping is crazier to me.
I “purge” often😂. My husband’s always like “there she goes again” Recently, I cleaned out my closet and got rid of clothes that are too big, stuff I want to move on from, and stuff that’s worn out. High end-listed on Poshmark. Worn out- trash, everything else- thread up.
I am in the middle of doing a declutter of my home. It is amazing how much stuff we have in our homes.Clothes are my downfall, I shop most of my clothes from a few op-shops. In my area Great Post . Christine you have inspired me to do better in the future.
The end of your video has motivated me to declutter my kids games/puzzles and also books! Thank you 😊 I love decluttering and watching decluttering videos
THANK YOU for how you feel about those velvet hangars. I've wondered. I never wear slinky fabric clothes but I was 'this' close to buying those hangars. Now I won't. You just saved me some $$$!
I spent way too much on those hangers too . We do not like they are maddening when trying to get clothing on and off , they all got donated out of here.
I have kept the same number of hangers for my clothes for a very long time... Like fifteen years. I have probably lost a few along the way, but in any case, my husband and I have a very minimal wardrobe already, so I keep the same number of hangers and any items we don't like we get rid of when we get new items. It works for me. 😅
Hi there i don,t like the velvet hangers either, infact they make getting my clothes onto them a nightmare, great video thank you for sharing lv from UK
Velvet hangers are the pits. They make me cringe every time I use them. I’m replacing mine with “grandma hangers” -those yarn wrapped wire ones as fast as I can make them (ie not very fast 😂). They last forever and are just grippy enough that your clothes don’t fall off.
Me donating a 1000 piece puzzle just to put an end to the project😂
🤣
😂😂😂😂
💀
That is hilarious!!! You just made my day!! 🤣
Now why didn't I think of that strategy?😂🙆♀️
I saw this and immediately thought: what?!?
Christine has been decluttering for years! How can she possibly have 1000 items to go?! I'm impressed 😁
I'm 73, so I've gifting some of my good jewelry to friends for birthdays and Christmas
Take your blankets, towels and pillows to an animal shelter if you can. Great video!
I take mine to Salvation Army, Goodwill , churches and domestic abuse homes/charities.
I do the same! Hoarders is great motivation!! 😂
hahahaha the way your son keep an eye on you while digging throughout the toys..... that look on his face was priceless 🤭🤭😂😂😂
I do that as well and they REALLY appreciate it.
@@wendyeskelin8765 Me, too.
Also shoes go in pairs in small wastebasket sized bags.
It's crazy to think about the stat regarding the avg American home and how many items it holds. Over 300,000 items! CRAZY!
My family of 6 is in the transition of moving (moved out of our house to sell but haven't bought the next place yet) and are staying at my parents house. We downsized about 85% of our items. What's cool about having such a high number. It it forced you to find things you don't like, like the plate set

Velvet hangers are terrible. For exact same reasons that Christine gave.

I love my velvet hangers. My work tops always slipped off wooden and plastic hangers lol my husband hates velvet hangers
We moved house and I decided we’d get those velvet hangers. They were too wide for our wardrobes, so I’ve been replacing them with narrower ones.
“All these things used to be money”. That cracked me up! Can’t wait to steal your quote. lol
I also dislike those hangers. You're the first person I have seen who agrees! Another enjoyable video 👍
As a larger lady I love the velvet hangers. My v neck tops just slide off other hangers because of the large opening. Same with sleeveless tshirts.
Love this…have been living quite minimally for years but it’s an ongoing process for sure. Things seem to accumulate. You outgrow things. Get gifts. Taste changes. A challenge like this makes maintaining your spaces more fun!

When she said she was throwing the extras away I was like Noooooooo 😮 I use mine like twice and then throw them away
Ikr? Ew. It makes me wonder what other hygiene stuff she skimps on.
Oh this is good to know I've used mine soo many times for my mustache 😅 Throwing them away and buying new ones asap
I love my velvet hangers. Got a large box at bed bath and beyond a few years ago. Decluttered a ton of my clothes and now my closet looks awesome!!

Good job! When I did the Minamalists 30-day challenge, towards the last I was counting each paper clip!😅

Im a Mary Kay Beauty Consultant. But I still have makeup from the past. I just decluttered 12 lippies.
Throwing the cards away hurt. I’d have tasked a child with organizing and counting the cards eep

Totally agree about the hangers🤣I hate them!
The only thing I like about them is they are thin and do not crowd the closet.
Me too 🤣
I’m with you on plastic hangers! Can’t give them up😂
I am so with you on the velvet hangers! The internet convinced me to get some and I hate them.
I have never in all my years looked at a hanger and thought "now I can buy new clothes"..😂🤣😂

Congrats for investing in your health, way to go!
Cleaned out a box of paperwork!
Thank you❤
Those were really great quilt rulers your Mom can find a great use for her quilt making.
Trio blocks are one of the most played with toy in our house too! We love them!
OMG. I had a goal of 1200 items for the YEAR ! I am only about 10 away from my goal now on Aug 1. I'm pretty excited about it !
Omgosh I need this so bad!!! Thanks for the motivation!!! I have been getting ready to do this as well and I keep putting it off idk why
I am with you on the velvety hangers I also prefer the plastic ones. I enjoyed this video, time to declutter now! TFS!
Amazing!! I may do this challenge when everyone goes back to school.
The ukulele 😮-at 107 degrees the dang snakes & scorpions have been rampart!! Stay safe! I signed up for the 5 items/ day for the year & regret it!! I’d rather do it in a week like this!! 1,825 items gone by Dec 31! Loved the video 🎉🎉
glad your kids were so involved in the process! when you said you were glad they were all out of the house i felt a little uneasy at first lol 🤣
I love minimalism seriously how much stuff do we really need?
Oh My G'Ness....... thank you. I have wondered why I was the only one on the planet that hated velvet hangers, and love my plastic one's! Like you, my clothes stuck to the velvet hangers wrong and didn't help them!
Hey Christine you’re inspiring me to go through the house and get rid of 1000 items I don’t use cloth hangers. I only use the plastic hangers and definitely no wire hangers.
I've been challenging my family for each of us to donate at least one thing every day. Seeing how long we can keep it up.
Interesting! It would probably be better if you can find someone to give things to or figure out how to repurpose things since donation centers are so unreliable these days
I'm impressed. In 2016 I challenged myself to get rid of 2016 items. That was challenging and it was over the whole year!
I agree about the hangers!!! I don't like the velvet ones either! I use them because I have them but nope, not a fan.
Last things i decluttered were my son's clothes, and now i have to do it again because over the summer he grew another size.... So all the long pants and t-shirts i was saving for fall.... have to go
Very impressive! Isn't ironic that when we set goals we seem to reach them. I just love your energy! Have a great day!
You just inspired me to declutter.
I once saw plastic hangers but with the velvet hanger look 🙂
I hate those hangers. I replaced mine with the plastic ones and never looked back.😂
I use more hangers in the winter/when I'm working in the school lunchroom. So I have extra hangers right now but I'll need them.
The face shavers are disposable. You’re supposed to use one only once. They get dull and full of bacteria.
What?! They are a one use only???? THIS IS BRAND NEW INFORMATION!
@@FrugalFitMomI use mine a couple of times but they get dull fast.
I “purge” often😂. My husband’s always like “there she goes again”
Recently, I cleaned out my closet and got rid of clothes that are too big, stuff I want to move on from, and stuff that’s worn out. High end-listed on Poshmark. Worn out- trash, everything else- thread up.
I am in the middle of doing a declutter of my home. It is amazing how much stuff we have in our homes.Clothes are my downfall, I shop most of my clothes from a few op-shops. In my area
Great Post .
Yep I hate them. I can't get my clothes off them.
You are amazing Gal ❤🎉
Your timing was perfect!!! I was just decluttering my basement and had your video playing to keep me going.
I love those felt hangars. Hubby hates them.
I tried this once long ago and I barely had 1000 items to start with. Those were the days lol. I need to do this again. Waaay too much stuff now!
You go girl in your decluttering journey!!🎉
Velvet hangers are the pits. They make me cringe every time I use them. I’m replacing mine with “grandma hangers” -those yarn wrapped wire ones as fast as I can make them (ie not very fast 😂). They last forever and are just grippy enough that your clothes don’t fall off.
Christine your videos are A JOY! Thank you for your awesome content. LOVE THEM!
Love the muppets edits 💚
I really don’t like the velvet hangers either, I switched back to plastic too.
You motivated me to clean my car. All done! Thanks!
