    I mostly play older games, and have a 4790k and am getting a 3080. I think 4k resolution will work just fine for me. I use the natural boost to 4.4 ghz. There are some new games I'm curious about Cyberpunk 2077, Baldurs Gate 3 and whenever the next sequel Elder Scrolls game to Skyrim comes out. Currently I'm on my list are Skyrim, witcher 3, Divinity original sin 1&2, Gothic 3, Risen 2, Dragon Age etc. 3080 @ 4k is probably overskill for most of these old games. I'll see how I do later with the newer games as they come. Eventually in ~4-6 years I'll upgrade. DDR5 ram is coming out, so if I have to get a new CPU, mobo etc, I'll wait until DDR5 is more of a thing than it is now (just released this July.)

      @@KatimaGaming Yeah, running daily at 4.8 for 100% stability, cause with 4.9 once in a while i have some crashes, so to avoid headaches of work not saved or sth, i daily use it in 48 and when heavy gaming i use it in 49 :)
      PD: Something to add is that oc is needed to play newer games paired with a good graphics card, because with stock settings bottleneck is noticeable.

    I had this question too and bought a 3090 first, and paired with my 4770k system (all core 4.7ghz). Coming from a GTX1070, It made 4K60 gaming a reality for basically every game! Absolutely worth it. It's not ideal, but you'll be happy just upgrading to a 3080 for now with older 4C/8T systems IF you're playing at 4K or with RTX ON / DLSS.
    Next gen games will raise the baseline very soon, so the quadcores are on their last legs for high end gaming.
    I moved the 3090 to a new Ryzen 5000 system and yes, you'll get somewhat higher frames across the board. And it's better for 4K120 in older games. The difference isn't all that noticeable in absolute frame rates tho. If you're strictly gaming, upgrade that GPU!

    • @KatimaGaming
      @KatimaGaming  3 года назад +1

      Wow thank you so much for sharing your experience. And yes you are very right, if gaming is just what you are after then GPU upgrade should always come first. Quadcores are definitely on their last legs. 2021 might be the straw that breaks the camels back for us. hehehe

    Actually going 4K reduces the bottleneck since you're going higher GPU usage over CPU usage
    In fact, if you can pull 100% of your GPU, an i3 will perform the same as an i9
    Obviously if both can take 100% of the GPU, the i7-4790K can't pull 100% of a 3080, but it does can pull a 3060 to the max
    So yeah, if your CPU is weak ask more of the GPU so you can relieve that stress on the CPU
    In fact, I have a GTX 1660 Super and in games like Warzone I get barely like 5 FPS less than more modern CPUs on the same card

  • @simplecat8736

    Was thinking about upgrading my 4790k the other day because Cyberpunk was chugging my rig and bottlenecking my cpu to 100% while the Gpu was less than 10%(at low settings with a 1660 gpu)
    Almost spent £2000 on a full new rig as I would need a new psu, motherboard and a bunch of other things to install a better cpu. After looking into this I managed to clear some of the bottleneck by increasing the game settings and even though I can no longer hit 60fps at all, the game doesn't stutter down to 20fps every couple of seconds. Really great video, saved me a lot of money dude but I probably will upgrade soon or get a RTX 3070

    4k did not work out so well for me and my 4790k. My old 1650 GPU just wasn't capable of it because it was pinned at 90% while the CPU sat in the 50-60% range the entire test. I saw no notable performance increase by upping the resolution on Cyberpunk 2077. Going from 30fps at 1080p to just 1440 dropped my fps into the mid 20s, in fact the only increase came from dropping to 900p to get close to 60fps with some graphics config I found on youtube. I'm considering a 3070 "equivalent" in the future, but I'm wondering if I don't need to a whole new machine with it.

      yep, planning the same for a HDMI 2.1 OLED TV. All the CPU must be capable of is at least frametimes fitting the 40-120 fps Gsync range, better 60fps+, im more than happy if i can use 4K properly with 70-100 fps. At least the limitations of 1440p/120 or 4K/60 are gone then, every fps more than 60 in 4K makes me happy then already. The 4970k really benifits from the higher RAM speeds. Your performance increase should be pretty noticeable. 10-20% performance still left on the table for free. Some people in the comments say even 4000 series will do fine on 4790k. 4000 series on 4790k wont be an issue but the main issue will be pcie 3 port that we have on the older motherboards back then, sure 4000 with newer pcie will be backward compatible but pcie3 only supports bandwidth upto 16gbps and 3080s bandwidth is 19gbps and i guess 4000 will be 30+ gbps or something, so its the pcie 3 port which will act as bottleneck so unless yall have pcie4/5 port GPU won't work as fast as specified ✌️

But with my 4790k at 4,8 GHz i dont feel that i need a new CPU - only with Battlefield 5 i had CPU bottlenecks because its pretty optimized for 6C/12T+ while our "old" Intels are 4C/8T.
      I have my hopes still in DDR5 systems, so probably something like Ryzen 6000+, Intel 13 gen+, THIS will be a dramatic upgrade from a good, old 4790k :) (probably similar to GTX 1070 vs RTX 3080(S/Ti)^^)

    4k probably runs better because most games are designed to run at a 16:9 aspect ratio.
    While the pixel density of 3440x1440 is lower, many game engines are (probably) not designed to scale performance-wise in a linear manner when extending your viewing angle-- therefore the scenery on the left and right side of the screen draws more objects/entities like foliage and NPCs, more shadow, more lighting, etc. and thus having a heavier impact on graphical performance.

    • @KatimaGaming
      @KatimaGaming  3 года назад

      Thank you for than analysis. You are right! Not every game scale well at 12:9. this is perhaps more on the CPU issuing instructions to the GPU to extend the field of view by maybe 20-25%. But I'm noticing a trend that more and more people are leaning towards ultrawide for gaming and productivity and is becoming less of a niche market. I sure hope in a few years time it will be more of the norm, same with how we all thought 1080p was overkill back then and its minimum today. Hehehe. Thank you for your insight!

Unfortunately i have a 4790k and 9900k and have been moving my 3080 ftw3 ultra to both systems and see a huge performance hit even at 1440p and 4k. 4790k won't go above 80fps even when oc'd to all core 4.5 with c state off. 9900k same settings pushes upwards of 120fps same game. I’m constantly thinking about a 10850k upgrade whilst I wait for a GPU, but rushing into something that’s not needed seems silly. Hi! Thank you for commenting and thank you for the kind words! I'm afraid 4K might only be doable on the 3080 on ultra settings. Based on my newer vids, 3080 already bottlenecks at AAA games on 4K ultra. 3070 might do it as well, but with just a bit of compromise with Ray Tracing off. As for your CPU, you might want to hold off as 4790k is already the fastest on your Motherboard. Meaning any CPU upgrade will require a new MoBo and DDR4 RAM. Just as pricey. So a new GPU is really a good stop point before overhauling your entire setup. Snatching a second hand 2080ti on the cheap might be just as good. Keep us posted on your plans!

      Hi. Good question! Yeah I underclocked the cpu to give others with slower CPUs a better example on the bottleneck. I do have videos where I benched it at 4.5 4.6 and 4.7. Check them out. They are all there. Cheers!

      Try looking at my newer vidoes. I did 1440p 16:9 Overclock. Runs pretty good.

    Hahahaha I love your comparison example it is funny. But yes. I do think the same way as you do. Some people just overestimate and underestimate the wrong parts in their pc... It is astonishing how low even the elder i7 models are sometimes in some games. I think the most important thing is that a game is well developed because otherwise your hardware simply does not matter at all. There were multiple very great examples like Cyberpunk, Eldenring, and nowadays Bugwarts LAGacy how I temporarily call it. I like the game but it does seem to become more and more "common" that some games come out being not really "ready" and they come with a lot of performance issues and bugs...

    I gave my granson my old PC with a 4690k cpu and 24 gb ram, and then bought him a 3070, and it works great. 1080 gaming is a breeze, and if you up the resolution, then the load goes onto the graphics card.
    The only issue he will have is that there is no TPM on the motherboard, and though i got windows 11 installed on that pc, he cant play Fifa 23 as the anti cheat program will not run due to the hardware restricitions.
    It works fine on windows 10, but that will be going out of support soon, so we will have to upgrade his motherboard at the very least in the next year or so,, as i cannot find a compatible TPM for his Asus CSB motherboard.
