  • Nigerians Protest Against Economic Catastrophe under Tinubu | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu introduced economic reforms as soon as he took office. He removed Nigeria's fuel subsidy & devalued the currency, the Naira. Both moves have had a disastrous impact on Nigeria's economy. The country is seeing inflation approach 30%. Palki Sharma tells you more.

The people do not trust the president. He came through corrupt means in an election he did not win, his history is entrenched in corruption (drug peddling, certificate forgery and election rigging) and his actions in power have raised many doubts about every promise he makes. Thank You so much Palki. Your doing a great job. There are other factors that have contributed to the problem on ground. Outside the two you mentioned other are 3) High cost of governance 4)Insecurity 5)Corruption. Life is so hard in Nigeria right now. Prices of goods and services have tripled. A loaf of bread that was sold at 500 naira in December 2023 is now sold for 1200 naira. Living in Lagos right now is hell for salary earners

Add legitimacy issues to the list. Everyone with a brain knows the man rigged his way to that seat, with the corrupt judiciary doing his bidding. Investors do not want to invest in an economy that is shaky where justice is sold to the highest bidder. Lack of constant electricity is another factor.

If you think of how the UAE is able to generate wealth to build and maintain its world class infrastructure, Nigeria has the same means of generating wealth from the same source as the UAE and even more wealth. However, compare the poor or substandard level of infrastructure in Nigeria with that of the UAE and you'll be shocked!

Again, the price of Diesel has increased from the the price we got after removing subsidy from Diesel because it was subsidy on Diesel that was first removed like two years ago. So, the price we bought up to November 2023 was still #800 per liter and since then, it has been changing, it's now #1,300 since January and since we do not have stable electricity, that's what industries use to produce and the cost is also reflecting.

Thank you for covering our situation, it's getting too much to bear. A carton of Indomi Noodles "Indomi Table" I bought at the end of January for #5,700 and was complaining is now between #11,000 and #12,000 and the price before covid 19 is #1,800-#1,900, even to the end of 2020 the covid year,we didn't buy it up to #2'500. I couldn't buy it, now I have 5pcs left and hoping the price will change anytime soon.

The real issue is that tinubu floated naira 2 weeks after subsidy removal which has caused a 300% devaluation of the local currency naira, so purchasing power is low.

The problem with Nigeria is tribalism. The Fulani and the Yorubas are working together to ensure they other tribes especially Igbos away from government thereby frustrate them with neck chocking policies. The more the brought those harsh policies the more the economy nose dive. That is the issue in Nigeria.

The government is trying to make Nigeria a more credit worthy Country to the international community and it's been tough on the masses .It's just like when you take what we call a LAPO loan here ,the repayment period is usually tough on the women traders who mostly patronise these loans but once they re done paying , they gain more respect and credibility to access more opportunities. We only have to appeal to the lenders to soften our repayment terms in view of the circumstances of the poor masses and of the precarious situation that the President finds himself in. That's my humble take on the issue . Ma'am

It comes down to this: keep the fuel subsidy, and remain perpetually in debt, with a bleak future or cut the subsidy, suffer pain while slowly walking your ways back to economic stability and freedom. Most Nigerians agree with the president that cutting the subsidy is the right step.

Thank you Palki for highlighting the struggle in our beloved country Nigeria. Can you throw more light (internationally) on the despicable political state where greedy political leaders live large and fat @ the expense of poor Nigerians? They have turned hardworking, contented people into angry men and women. They consistently ask the poor to tighten their belts but are buying billions of Naira worth of official vehicle at such a time as this and loot on a regular! It is not only the removal of fuel subsidy (which has always been a muted way of milking the country for long) that is plunging people into this dire situation, it is complexities of issues which the current politicians are not ready to fix because it that is not their aim and objective. What about the insecurity that has sent most farmers out of their farms and consequently increased hunger? Some problems are global, I do agree but Nigeria’s case is peculiar!!
