There is nothing like building a Tamiya.
There are so many that I wanted as a 80's teen and I still want them today. Lol

The stock Tamiya silvercan motor used to be a 27t, 540 and about 2100/2300kv rpm when unloaded.
I heard the more modern ones may be a 23 or 25t, but yours is the older version.
You can adjust the gear ratios a little. The spacer that goes between the motor and the gearbox, can be removed and the motor can be mounted directly to the gearbox. The different mounting holes mean you can fit a much larger pinion. The one from the Tamiya hornet fits / works perfect for more top end.
I run my old Chrome Pumpkin on 2s with an old Hobbywing 2 pole brushless motor. 17.5 and about 2400kv i think. It's pretty tame.
The third shock mod on the back axle is maybe worth doing to stop the gearbox slamming into the body.
If you want to upgrade to another brushed motor i reckon anything south of 20t is going to be a bit too much

1979, my 1st 'real rc car' was a hitec kangaroo! Started racing a year later (dad had to be sure I wasn't like his friends' kids, & lose interest!), with a tamiya frog🤯. 1st true race car was the kyosho ultima. Discovered then, I was good at it! Wow, 1980. Damn I'm old! But, I've been "modifying rc since 1980"!😁😁😁😁😁

&, if I remember correctly the gen 1 tamiya (pumpkin, grasshopper, hornet) used a 380 brushed motors. Later on they included a plastic adapter to use THEIR 540 motors. Gen 2 series ain't as renown as the originals.
I bought a 2nd gen clodbuster & was badly disappointed.

    • @ExocagedRC

The transmission in the pumpkin/lunchbox is allot stronger than you think once you use proper berings! I'm running a 4300kv brushless in my pumpkin and it's crazy fun. The only thing that keeps breaking is the body mounts lol 😆

Those were precious memories back when we kids. I remember I cried angrily when I opened the Blackfoot box (my 1st Tamiya truck) and realized it wasnt RTR. But then I was determined to put that thing together. But then again. You should have seen the look on my face when I opened up the Clodbuster box. I was well you know... Intimidated and excited as well as mind blown. 🤯😵

Tamiya use Japan JIS standard head screws on their kits…it’s not the same as the Phillips head screws. If you use the right JIS screwdriver, you will not strip screws head anymore. 😉

Just remember, Joe - size doesn't matter...it's what you do with it. As for Tamiya kits, in general, yeah, they're simple...but, it would be nice (REALLY nice) of they updated Miss pic these 'old' kits. I mean, seriously, that suspension is SERIOUSLY outdated. Enjoy. As for me, about to start building an Enduro Gatekeeper kit, adding the IFS.
