That was great, my favourite skirt for fit and flair was an hankercheif skirt when it finally gave up the ghost, I took it to pieces snd made another. It took a lot of precise sewing like you said. And more fabric than I imagined it would. But I never knew it was a variation of a Godet skirt and how easy it would of been to draft a proper pattern for it! 3 things I would like to know, 1 you didn't mention the hem should the skirt be hemmed normally and 2 the Godet pieces can they be cut on the bias? Also I would like to know was Godet a designer? Thank you Izzy! x❤x

So glad to hear you’ve found the video helpful. In all the drafting videos in this skirt series, we are focussing on demonstrating the technique of adding volume and altering your block to create different shapes. You can add any type of hem you would like to this pattern. Just add the extra length you need to hem in the manner you wish. We also do not show a waistband, and that’s because we’ll be filming a separate series all about waistbands. That way you can pick and choose which design features you want for your final garment, piecing together different drafting techniques as you want. We recommend that the godet is not cut on the bias. They should be drafted as shown on the video to ensure they hang beautifully when sewn. The design history of the godet is ambiguous, as the feature was popularised during the mid-twentieth century and worn by swing dancers as its created extra volume and movement to their skirts. We are not aware of any designer called Godet, but it’s a nice idea that there might have been someone of that name who designed the feature! Izzy 🙂

Hi Patricia, how about a suiting fabric or a twill or gabardine. It really depends on the style/look you want to achieve 😊

This is a brilliant tutorial but I've one question: Can this be worked into the side seams on the pattern for a coat? I live in the cold north and refuse to pay huge sums for a greatcoat, so I'm making one. I added 6 inches to the length so my shins don't freeze. But the coat circumference is a little narrow for my longer stride. A godet seems like the perfect solution, but I'm unsure if it can be absorbed into the pattern or should be sewn in separately between the side seams.

What if you want the bottom of the panel to come to a point with larger godet? Where do you start to angle it in on the panel and how much do you need to add to godet width to compensate for narrower panel bottom???

Hi Dawn, I’m really sorry but I’m not sure exactly what you’re asking, could you perhaps expand on your query so we can help you?

Thanks for this. I have been upcycling men's jeans into long skirts and this technique is exactly what I need to improve. I was really flumoxed by the point but your description of how to sew it will help me with the next. I will also make smaller godets and put in 4 rather than just 2 based on your drafting tips.
