The musical was so good and when she sang out her despair that her faith in God must exist who is she without her faith. You could really feel here pain.

It's from a musical called "Kristina från Duvemåla" of "Kristina from Duvemåla" (in english). And this is the part where the head character Kristina aka Helen Sjöholm begins to doubt God for the first time in her life. The musical is based on Vilhelm Moberg's "The Emigrants" book series from the late 1940's. If you haven't read them you really should. They are amazing and so is Helen Sjöholm. She've done so much more than just musicals. She's been acting in a few movies and series, she's been in a dance band (Benny Andersson's Band) and she've been giving the people of Sweden and the world the best of her voice in all kinds of songs and lyrics. She is a queen when it comes to acting and singing. She is the best thing that could ever happened to the world of preforming arts.

It’s a musical about famine times in Sweden. Many people emigrated to America (Minnesota) with hopes for a better life. Kristina gave in and agreed to move after she lost a child. She is homesick and sad and when the doctor says she can never become pregnant again (she can no longer be with her husband) bc then she may die she breaks down in doubt for the first time in her life. She feels abandoned by God and alone in the world.

Nice reaction Paul and David! In case you don't know the background, the song is about her doubting her faith in God. Persuaded to leave her native country, life as an immigrant in America is a struggle, she is homesick for Sweden and has lost a child and she's asking if God even exists, and if her faith has been in vain. There is a version by Helen in English if you're interested called "You Have to be There" : ruclips.net/video/34vWDb5Fvb4/видео.html.

I saw this musical by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus (the two men in ABBA) live three times. 15 years ago I and Björn and Benny were the main speakers at a conference about the great author Vilhelm Moberg. I spoke about Moberg's works for the theatre, and Björn and Benny spoke about how and why they created the musical "Kristina från Duvemåla" based on Moberg's novels about "The Emigrants". Benny told us that he was putting a lamb steak into the oven, when at this very moment he got the idea that they should make a musical based on "The Emigrants". He immediately phoned Björn and told him this. Björn was a bit hesitant in the beginning, because "The Emigrants" is a series of 4 very voluminous novels, and how should they be able to comprehend this into a musical of about 3 hours.

Hi, I know it's been a while. This is a musical theatre piece from the musical Kristina från Duvemåla. It's a story of a couple who immigrated to USA in the 1880's. It's based on a fictional story over three books. In this version by Björn Ulvéus and Benny Andersson )formerly the two Bs of ABBA) is told from this woman's Kristina point of view. The rest is in the comments I believe. She is fighting between the faith she has lived with and the anger with God as she miscarried.
Helena Sjöholm is our brightest Musical star and we're very proud to have her being that. Yours, Ann

Stunning voice! But somewhat disturbing lyrics.
Its important to know that God is not the one to abandon anyone. It's us that abandon Him when we buy the lies of the devil. Our Father God always has a way out of every crisis, as a victor! But sometimes we yield to something else or we have lack in understanding how to persue the spiritual matters.
The living Word of God says:
"Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will NOT leave you or forsake you." (Deuteronomy 31:8)
    And..
"The thief (satan) comes only to steal and kill and destroy; but I (Jesus) have come that they may have LIFE, and have it to the full." (John 10:10)
    And...
"For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith." (1John 5:4)
    ❤❤❤❤

She speaks to God, that way she finds her lost faith again. This is from a book series from the 50s, "The Emigrants" by Vilhelm Moberg. Except from childbook writer Astrid Lindgren I think he´s generally considered our greatest novel writer. The series is nominally about a few people who emigrated from Sweden to Minnesota in the 1850´s, but behind it´s a deep study in different approaches to life and how they play out for each of the individuals. Had it been written in English you would all know about it.
So this is a song about faith, a song that knows everything about faith. Yet Björn Ulvaeus who wrote the lyrics is a declared atheist, while the writer of the original story ended his own life swimming out into a lake. God works in mysterious way indeed!

I don't think you understand the context of this song.
This is based on a real person, real events in the mid 1800s, when they migrated from Sweden to the USA to escape a famine.
Horrible, cruel things happened, many died, life was hard. She lost kids and the doctors told her she would die if she became pregnant again, so she can't lie with her husband anymore.
Even though she was very religious, she was driven to the point where she had trouble accepting that God could be real when he is supposed to protect her but all these bad things happen.
No, she did not find her faith through the song, she is desperately trying to hold on to the belief while her subconscious is telling her that maybe it was never true, that life simply is cruel and there's nothing to protect her from it.
It's hard to imagine for us, living in the modern western world, how hard life was and how alone and isolated/disconnected people were, and completely uneducated.

Helen also performed a concert version of Kristina at Carnegie Hall. It's called Kristina (at Carnegie Hall).
It's English version is named "You have to Be There."
It was workshopped on New York I'm 2006 with an American cast. It had plans to open on Broadway a few years later but fell into legal trouble over the book (script). Instead, a concert non costumed version was performed in 2009 with Helen as Kristina.
It never made it to Broadway. But even most versions of Kristina have Bern "in concert versions." This means no script for dislogue or just a few words and is is sung through. No sets. Just a microphone. Some in concert versions may have costumes but are minimal.
Kristina as well as Chess have found that they've done better as concerts rather than being fully staged. While local productions of Chess may have done full productions, the most recent English spoken recording was a in concert version with Josh Groban, Idina Menzel, and Adam Pascal. I know London West End has done full staged version ms since then, but Broadway hasn't done any fully staged versions of chess for a long time-- just regional theaters.
The problem is I'm not sure if this musical could find a home, even if they did put a Broadway production on. It would have been a hit in the days when Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, Martin Guerre, Phantom of the Opera or even Sunset Boulevard.
However, with Broadway turning more pop and even hip hop due to Hamilton, Kristina probably would not do well compared to these newer musicals, especially the Disney musicals or in the likes of Beetlejuice, or Mrs Doubtfire.
It's kind of funny that some people think Les Miserables is an opera. It is only an opera in the sense that it is dung through. If you were to compare On My Own to a song from an opera, you'd probably begin to hear how On My Own is more pop than opera. Yes, there are s couple belts. However, just because someone belts at the end of a song, it doesn't necessarily make it opera. Actually the other name for a musical is light opera.
Now, when most people think of musicals in America, people generally don't think of light opera. They think of contemporary music film the 1930s and 1940s tk the pop or power pop rock ballads of the 1980s or Let it Go from Frozen or Defying Gravity from Wicked. However, the meaning behind the word musical is light opera.
So that's why I say if you were to compare Les Miserables to Fallstaff, Les Miserables would seem more like an operetta like The Pirates of Penzance Songs like Do you Hear The People Sing or On My Own have note roots in pop than opera. The only reason why people think Les Miserables is an Opera is because of the strong voices and belting. Heck, if anyone thinks Little People is opera, we need help. I can see how might think of it as an operetta but not opera. Even Red and Black is more big bandy, than opera. Stars may sound opera but the role of Javert just has very strong voice that resonates, yet not an opera voice.
