Could this new ultrasound change the way cancer is treated? - BBC News

  • A new cancer treatment which destroys tissue non-invasively is being trialled, and, if it gains regulatory approval, it could change the way that cancers are treated in hospitals.
    Histotripsy is a type of focused ultrasound which, unlike heat and radiation based treatments, is more precise - which makes it a more appealing treatment option for smaller and widespread tumours.
    US based firm Histosonics is running the trial, and they are focusing their efforts on the liver - an area which is notoriously hard to treat, with low survival rates for patients.
    Just 46 people worldwide have received the procedure so far, but if it proves to be safe and effective, it could be rolled out on a much bigger scale.

      It would have been great to have had for my ferret! I adopted her age 3 1/2, so she was already middle-aged, and took her to the vet immediately as it was extremely obvious to me she had either lymphoma or insulinoma. Well, she had lymphoma, but chemo made no sense - ferrets don't live that long; by the time treatment was over she'd be elderly already, and would have suffered for no reason. So she received no treatment except for pain and swelling and eventually died of the cancer a little earlier than most ferrets live.

      Fifteen year wait for treatment suggests the possibility of many deaths occurring on the waiting list. After the colon cancer I had was surgically removed, there was a wait and see if this would metastasise to my lungs. This did not happen, but instead the lung was hit with a small tumor of its own. This was removed by keyhole surgery and only several small faded slits remain where the surgeons blade went to work - a memory now faded.
      I believe that I've been fortunate to have dodged a bullet and now being cancer free.

      I don't see why not, it targets and destroys cancer cells so it should be effective for any type of cancer. The primary difference between this treatment and conventional methods, such as physical removal, is the ability to more effectively eliminate cancer in hard to reach areas such as the brain or deep within organs.

    Getting a an object to resonate to destruction had fascinated me for a while and as I had an interest in human biology, I applied my thoughts.
    After a good few years, of quiet research, I went to a local enterprise company. I needed help with patents.
    To cut a very long story short, I did not succeed. Apparently, some university, associated to the enterprise company, beat me to the post.
    Well, we keep trying to live. As for the learning?

    Now he has to deal with the poisoning of his system with radiation and radioactive chemicals, which we know, kills and destroys everything…ultrasound should be used over X-ray whenever possible, in my opinion.

      The NHS protects YOU not the other way round!! Also what "boosted"? Cancer has exploded after these shots and ONLY the "boosted" are sick!! Take it all if you want but stop encouraging others! It doesn't stop COVID and I've yet to actually see anyone who is actually sick with it.

    Plant based food is also a step in the right direction. Combined maybe even better results. Watch Dr. Greger’s Nutritional facts in this subject.

    Can they encapsulate the tumor area somehow, before doing the ultrasonic removal procedure? (to prevent any cancer cells from being releases to other parts of the body?)

    • @james.telfer
      @james.telfer Год назад

      If they're inoperable by definition encapsulation would be extremely hard.
      If you could successfully identify tumour cells that accurately you might as well just use it to deliver chemo to them in the first place and skip the ultrasound.

      I’m no expert but you can’t really separate on part of the body from the rest of the organism. There are too many interconnections. Blood flows, the lymphatic system and probably much else beyond that.

    • @HowP88
      @HowP88 Год назад

      This isn't possible - tumors are not separated from organs, they are cells of the organ (eg in this case liver) that have become cancerous. Therefore the cancerous liver cells are actually inside the healthy liver. If you could physically separate cancer cells from healthy cells, then you may as well just surgically extract them, which is pretty much exactly what cancer surgery is.
      Source: I've watched a lot of cancer surgery at work.
