happens more than you think...however dolphins will not do this with bull sharks they are just food to a bull...nothing more and rarely survive an encounter
I'm not a marine biologist, but I can imagine how valuable this 9 minutes of footage can be to them. I suspect, pragmatically, great whites are equally as curious as dolphins; incredibly fascinating to watch this - thank you, Carlos!
This is the most interesting Shark dolphin encounter you have ever posted. Incredible. I look forward to future videos of these encounters and hearing your perspectives. Fantastic. Thank you
Somehow it feels like you contributed more to shark conservation with your drone footage than many others who go on dive expeditions for years or even decades. Keep up the good work, I enjoy it a lot! 🥰
That’s because everyone else attracts them unnaturally with chum and dead fish, so they get the behavior of a shark expecting to clean up dead animals.
@@stephencook7337 I rather think of the filming of a newborn Great White shark when writing that he adds more to shark conservation than most dive expeditions I have seen in documentaries and such.
Totally agree...in the 80's almost every white shark documentary was all about maneaters/killing machines led to boats for cage diver footage with chum lines and tuna chunks. Unnatural as hell. All this drone footage is the most real and natural behavior footage to exist.
The footage of the dolphins using their echo-location in unison to access the shark was amazing! 🦈🐬🐬And very eye-opening to know they don't always chase sharks away, like so many of us were led to believe.
I found your channel way back in the beginning and have followed your journey. It has been so educational to both you and I! I am a waterman for life and find the ocean fascinating since childhood. Thank you for publishing your evidence and mana’o!!!
Agreed. There's so many fringe shark channels out there spewing credulous myths aplenty. Carlos, to the contrary, has a very credible channel with exceptional content that has attracted the attention of the world's top shark biologists and researchers. 🏆🦈
Here in Hawaii, we don't recommend swimmers to swim with wild dolphins in the ocean, since tiger and great white sharks follow the dolphins seeking the young and sick dolphins to attack and eat them.
Fantastic footage... As always. I can't wait for you to put out content every week... I do understand that there is an extreme amount of time and patience that goes into every video, and for that I thank you. Lovely job.
Hahahaha! Incredible footage, sir. Especially the end when the dolphins intentionally and aggressively charged (under) the great white (hopefully just to annoy him/her). I also loved the idea that earlier the lone great white wanted to be part of the dolphin pod. That was a beautiful thought. "NAAAAAAATURE!"
Can everybody hit the like button for him? It's a crime he doesn't have millions of subscribers. I'm always mesmerized by his videos. The music, videography, and narration are all amazing.
This channel has helped me overcome an absolute fear of sharks. I can say I respect them now and would probably still shit my pants but handle the encounter much better.
Learning from you all the time, the more we see the more we can understand and the better we can protect. To see two very smart predator species moving around each other and interacting is fascinating
More beautiful shark footage Carlos. 🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈 The idea that dolphins save people from sharks is just people anthropomorphizing dolphins and wrongly demonizing sharks. The sharks are not the problem, the people are.
It is known that for sharks, a large group of objects merge into one. It is quite possible that it was not dolphins who protected a person from a shark - they sought to surround him, because the more of them there are, the lower the risk for each individual that the shark will attack him. And the shark was really retreating because it couldn't pick a target. And people perceived it as something that dolphins protect them.
Great Stuff Carlos, I am not sure I have seen any film of Dolphins actively chasing a white, another first time behavior captured. Every video shows me a little bit more of these beautiful creatures, epic work shining a light on the true life and nature of the White Shark and it's very different to the monster portrayed in most media they feature in. As ever, keep em coming and hope you had a lovely thanksgiving with your family.
TY4 the inspiring video! Dolphins do seem to like to bother the sharks for fun & not the other way around as you've shown here, but what if the sharks are really hungry LOL! You mentioned orcas at the end, they're my very favorite to watch❤ then whales, then sharks, then dolphins but I love them all the same! ❤❤
This is a very dangerous myth, because many surfers were attacked while they were among dolphins. For a shark, there is no difference between a dolphin and a seal.
It’s interesting how synchronized the dolphins were in their movements just before and during the charge at the shark Perhaps dolphin shows reveal more about their natural behavior than one would think
I'm a Los Angelino that loves the beach. I hate that you put this fear in me but I can't stop myself from devouring your content. I guess knowledge is power but a part of me longs for the days of my ignorant bliss. Hopefully I will come full circle and accept that attacks are rare and they were here when I was swimming around and not knowing they were and I was just fine. I just had no idea how many there were and how close they get to people.
Ever since I was a child, I've known that dolphins do interact with sharks, due to a story that was recounted in a children's book about an actual real dolphin. Opo was a female dolphin who lived near a fishing village in New Zealand and when one of the local fisherman fell overboard during stormy weather at sea, she attacked a shark with full aggression to dissuade the predator from biting the man. The shark took the hint and fled from her vicinity.
Your footage must be a gold mine for marine biologists. I know it's very entertaining to a guy who grew up fishin in Florida on the beaches and bays. Now I'm by the Chesapeake Bay and still fishin. Your videos make me want to get a drone, but I don't know if we can fly them here because of the military bases surrounding my area. I'd like to use one to find fish around the marshes from my kayak and at the beach.
This sort of behavior reminds me of interactions I frequently see here in Australia between birds of prey such as hawks and eagles and smaller more agile birds that harass them continuously until they leave the area. As much as they might like to, the large predators, without the element of surprise, are at the mercy of the smaller birds - who are essentially acting as natures security guards while easily keeping out of the way of those sharp beaks and talons. Being the apex predator isn’t necessarily easy!!
One thing I've learned about dolphins over the years is that they can be pretty nasty and vicious. They are not the sweet, loveable, playful creatures most people think they are. They will torture and torment another marine creature to death for their own fun/sport. They also seem to have long and strong memories. Over a period of weeks, I watched a guy tease a dolphin with food and then slap it. The dolphin had enough and one day when the guy tried the same BS with the dolphin, it tricked him and grabbed him. It pulled him into the water and I believe it was purposefully trying to drown him. Had it not been for the 4 other people on his boat I'm pretty sure the dolphin would have killed him.
@@GroppeljohannKlotenkempe-vr6oh Makes no difference to me if you believe it or not. I know what I know and what I've seen. Do some research yourself then I dare you to try what that fool did and find out. Just remember, play stupid games you win stupid prizes.
@@summersands8105 I do not doubt that a Dolphin in this case was fed up and would take some revenge, I doubt your claim „over a period of weeks, I watched a guy…“. That‘s the non-convincing part and I don‘t believe it
@@summersands8105 No man! You obviously DIDN‘T knew what I meant 😂 You wanted to convince me that Dolphins can be bullies / dangerous / revengeful or whatever. Sensational. Question though. I sometimes see what appears to be a drone in the footage. At around 6.01 there is another drone. Who owns it? Thanks & keep up the great content.
I think you are seeing a difference between a smart mammal and a smart fish. The fish's curiosity ends with "Can I eat it? Can it eat me?" The mammal's curiosity goes much further, and includes "Hey Tommy, I dare you to sneak up on it try to scare it."
"..just for a moment i imagined the shark wanted to be part of the (dolphins') pod"... This is like a poem. Maybe print it in one of your shirts , beautiful quote.
I think it would make sense that sharks wouldn't unnecessarily look for a confrontation against a dolphin, the risk is just too big, a lot of effort for not too many chances of success compared to other prey, if they even eat dolphins. It also seems logical that if those waters are good enough for the dolphins to survive, there's enough food for another animal that basically needs the same. Maybe the shark was low on energy as well and dolphins noticed this after being close to it for a while. In this short video, dolphins do seem to exhibit some intelligent behavior. Not comparing it to a human though, of course.
@ The idea dolphins (save orcas) are dangerous for sharks is a myth, and larger sharks (great whites included) do frequently hunt dolphins. And dolphins and great white sharks don’t eat the same sorts of food (great whites eat larger stuff on average, including dolphins).

the dolphins outclass the sharks in every way... however, the sharks are probably never prey for dolphins, no matter their stage of life, but dolphins are definitely prey for great whites on occasion...
All my times in the ocean, the thought of the presence of dolphins deterring the presence of sharks has never occurred to me. Orcas on the other hand, definitely.
It is as though dolphins are aware of the sharks inability to think, just to react to sensory input, the dolphins decide to ef with it by passing it by like they did. That shark went into full error doing a full 360 in ten consecutive turns. If anything, mammals breahting oxygen seem to be more intelligent then sensory sharks and fish.
