This is from the first of six albums that Tormé and Shearing recorded on Concord Records. Tormé won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Male at the 25th Grammy Awards.
I knew some guys that played for him and said that he was a perfectionist to work for. In the end, you have to admire an artist who knows what they want. They said that he also had perfect pitch, which explains why his scatting is so spot on. One of the best ever.
You will NEVER hear that kind of jazz complexity from any modern small group. 3 people, absolutely slaying the stage. Mel was incomparable. George was stupendous. I don't know who was playing Bass, but Kudos as well. Nobody could listen to that and not tap a toe on the floor or hand on a table. THANK YOU for sharing that.
It was fun seeing you enjoying this so much. Ahhh - my Dad loved Mel Torme so I grew up familiar with him, he definitely had a style. I didn't know any other kids my age who knew Big Bands, Swing or Jazz! 😁 Thanks for this - lovely memories.
I was sure you would love this one Jeff! I really enjoyed your reaction when the mood shifted. This was recorded at the Mark Hopkins Hotel, sponsored by the Paul Masson Vinyards in 1982. The bassist was Brian Torff. I particularly enjoy the section where George starts playing "Bach" and Mel ad libs along with him. Classic stuff!
George Shearing / Mel Thorme Berlin Jazzfestival 89' Full Concert. Seeing them perform live is even better. 64 years of age, and his range and breath control is a miracle for me. My early trombone teacher once said: study Mel Thorme's legato.
