    Over the years I've had a lot of questions from newer riders about their clutches. Many don't understand clutch drag and think that there is something wrong with their clutch because it drags and doesn't fully remove all the power from the rear wheel.
    Lets talk about it!
    Here is my website. You should check it out!

    PRO TIP: Before starting your motorcycle when it's cold, put it in gear, hold the clutch lever all the way in, and manually push the bike one meter forward and backward to unstick the clutch plates. Then, shift it into neutral and start the engine. Shifting into first gear becomes much smoother after following this procedure.

    Fluid drag (try a bike with a dry clutch and it wont do it)..... but a clutch dragging badly can be a sign of a notched basket, not allowing the clutch plates to release properly.

Really love what your doing here tho with the platform you've created for yourself, it's amazing and just goes to show how easy it is to just simply spread the kindness one may have. is it normal that while the bike is off (also so can hear it better) and it is in gear with the clutch pulled in that it makes a click sound at first when rolling the bike forward or backward? Also seems like there is still some resistance when spinning the rear wheel with it off of the ground, with the clutch pulled in while in gear?

    I really appreciated this video! My fiancé has a 98 rm 125, and I fully rebuilt the whole bike, without replacing the clutch. On the third heat cycle of breaking it in, when the clutch was in the bike moved in gear on the ground. I filed grooves in the basket and on the stand the wheel still moved. I did not test it on the ground again. If that happens again, what should I be looking into? The grooves are taken care of and the plates are in good condition.

    is it possible that there is a reasonable amount of clutch drag and an unreasonable amount? I never used to notice this when loading my bike onto hitch carrier but ever since my buddy crashed my brand new TBI pro, bending the clutch lever, I suddenly notice it being way harder to push around while in gear. I also recently changed the gear oil so I dont know if that is adding to the problem. anyways I never used to notice this when pushing bike around but now it is literally 5 times harder to push around compared to it being in neutral and sometimes it doesn't want to click down into 1st as well.... I dunno it bothers me that it wasn't like that before and I never noticed it but maybe im just tripping lol also I should mention my clutch lever seems to have almost no free play. I cant seem to find a spec in the manual for this how much freeplay is normal?

    • @yukonjon5964
      @yukonjon5964 Год назад +5

      you mean with the manual clutch lever held in right? simple answer is the clutch cable needs the slack taken out of it for the proper lever freeplay. but if that's not the issue... the oil could be too thick. the clutch is worn too far for the cable adjustment to make up for it. the clutch basket sides are worn out so the plates don't want to move due to the notches in the basket. sometimes the internal linkages wear down and loose travel of motion to move the clutch. could also be too thick of clutch plates or discs for another model bike.

    • @Maker1000
      @Maker1000 3 месяца назад

      That is too much drag. Typically the weight of the bike should be sufficient to stop the wheel from spinning. Check for clutch free play at the lever. And check for thrust washers in clutch basket. They can wear out so much that when the clutch nut is tightened, it can bind and drag as soon as you get out of neutral.

      Most bikes don't like to start in gear. Especially the modern high performance 4 strokes.

      @@DirtBikeChannel good to know I have a 2003 Yamaha wr250f and it’s just kind of annoying putting it in N every time it stalls

    this video is unnecessarily long. he keeps saying "because its friction. its normal. because its friction. its normal. because its friction. its normal". i will give you extra info instead.
    the yamaha has a mechanism that wont start the engine when it is in gear. its not issue of clutch drag but a safety feature.
    the reason why i came here is because my motorcycle wont go in neutral because of that clutch drag. so theres different level of severity of this clutch drag.

    Just got this guys email.. I dont watch the channel all the time, but like the channel and love dirt bikes and off roading. So I enter your contest but cant win a bike cuz i dont watch all the time and cant answer your questions.. Winning a dirtbike could help someone get into the sport easier, or start a passion for it. But it seems like only hardcore fans have chance. Unsub'd.

    My KTM 520 dirt bike has insane drag. When I hold the clutch and shift into first it dies if I don't rev it up when it's cold. Is that normal?

    • @DirtBikeChannel

      Yeah, it's pretty normal when the bike is cold.

      My husqvarna that I bought used was doing that, I fiddled with the clutch, and it made no difference, but then I changed the oil, and it stopped stalling when shifting to 1st, try an oil change, and possibly bleed or rebuild clutch cylinders. It may help or completely solve the issue.

      MMKnight, on a bike that old it’s very possible that your clutch basket and inner hub are notched and worn out. I helped a buddy replace his inner hub, clutch basket and plates and it made a huge difference.
