Find others in your area who raise turkeys and other fowl and ask how they corral and keep their flocks safe. I’m betting they would be happy to give you the best tricks and tips.
I’ve seen others where they put special netting over their chicken/Turkey pens. Have you thought of that? I LOVE when you post a new video! You guys are so inspirational!!
Elysia, you could do a really cute children's book about putting the farm animals to bed at night. It was so sweet how you say good night to each one. Love your channel, the whole Engish family, and all the animals. It's always fun to see what's going on at the homestead as your vision comes to life.
Make yourself some bird sticks, long poles, branches or pvc pipes, make 2 about 5 or 6 feet, you can hang strips of material or strings on them, hold them out in front of you around a foot or so off the ground and about 5 feet apart so you can use them to corral your turkeys. Hopefully that will help you get all of the birds in the coop at once. The pigs are very well behaved and just the cutest especially with their little dirty noses.
I use a red plastic coffee can. When my chickens see it and i have seeds(that rattle in the can) along with a treat, cooked ground beef or chopped eggs, and i call them by saying treat treat treat and shaking the can. They come running. Much easier than chasing them at forty below. I had considered clipping wing feathers on one side but then they wouldn't be able to get away from danger. So they are food motivated birds- carrot tops, cooked protein, baby cukes, banana. Very spoiled almost nine years old and still laying!
Not sure if you are aware, but Turkeys are generally considered safe from most predators when roosting in trees. Love what you are doing for all of your animals!
I don’t know if this will work for pigs and turkeys but here are a couple of thing we did at the no kill animal shelter where I volunteered. To keep them from digging under we had lengths of rebar bent to look like candy canes. Pounded these in the ground with the curved end over the bottom of the fencing. At the top of the fence we used chicken wire to cover the pens. A neighbor of mine used chicken wire and made about a 2 foot fence that leaned into the pen area. I have never had any experience with farm animals and I know you are very intelligent and will find the right solutions. Probably some of the suggestions you get at least will give you a laugh. It’s so good to see a family working together. Have you decided if you and the boys are doing a Christmas craft show? I love seeing all the ideas you come up with and seeing the boys, who are really young men now, enjoy doing this with you. I think the horses are going to like their new area.
The turkeys will learn the new routine 👍. The barn is looking great 🎉. The horses are enjoying watching all the building progress and the live “ turkey tv “ 🤣 !!!!
I love my bourbon red turkeys. Yours are beautiful! We kept ours in an electric (solar) poultry net from Premier 1. We had to clip their wings to keep them in it. Now, we are back to free ranging them during the day and keeping them safe in the coop at night. We love to keep them out because they can forage, and they even come up on our deck and knock on the door for treats. We have had predators. Mainly fox and coyote around June, when they have babies to feed. We have two Great Pyrenees livestock guardian dogs (Smith and Wesson) and that helps.
Rounding up All of the Turkeys was Hilarious. I hope they learn to go in on their own so you don’t have to chase them down every night to put them in their coop. Enjoyed this Video. 😊🤟🏼💕🙏🏼
Also, it usually takes a night or two of having to put them into the coop and then they learn that's what they're supposed to do and will then do it on their own. Mine can easily fly on top of my barn. The roof is over 20 feet high.
The turkeys got so big! I love how much you love your animals and how you care for them. Your property is seriously a slice of heaven! Can we have a bee update?
Elysia and Phil love you 🥰 guys you guys are so funny 🤣 😂😂😂😂😂love it beautiful the place were you are living it’s so nice and relaxing 😎 enjoy your videos🎉you have a beautiful family god bless you all
Hi Elysia!! Turkeys and chickens cannot see in the dark. The inside of the coop will be darker than outside, and they will be very leery about going into the dark coop. Maybe a light in the coop will help lure them into it until they learn it is a safe space, even if it is dark inside. Everything is looking so nice!!
Awesome love the little turkey run area The pigs are so cute They knew it was time for bed The barn is going to be awesome Praying the weather holds for you Have a blessed week 💗
Not sure if someone already suggested this, but we learned with our chickens that initially they wouldn’t go in the coop when the inside was dark. Once we lit the inside (on a timer)They went right in. Maybe that would work with the turkeys?😊
Have you ever thought about clipping their wings? It doesn’t hurt the bird- if I understand correctly it’s a process where you thin their wing feathers, so that they’re unable to fly. It would make them more vulnerable to predators, but they wouldn’t be able to escape.
That reminds me so much when at my parents we had turkeys 🦃 , chickens 🐓 and pigs 🐖 and all for consumption. When we were young enough, we would get into the pigs pen and sit on the pigs like in a horse. That was so funny, we always gave them names. I remember the last ones we had, they were called Mutt and Jeff. My mother would kill the chickens in the Fall and we had to help to take the feathers off, ooohhh, that was not my favorite farm job. I liked driving the small tractor 🚜 that pulled a trailer when my brothers who were all older than me would pick up the rocks in the potato field, threw them on the trailer and I drove the tractor. What good memories. You are bringing up your boys in the best place kids should all be brought up. Good luck with the finishing of your barn.
Turkeys like to roost up in trees, or up high on things. You may have to put netting over the top of the turkey area. Also of you would start going into the coop just before dark with some feed they might learn to go in and eat.
Take and build sections of fenced roofs that are hinged to the top front of the turkey building and raise them up from being placed up on top of the four foot fence when needing to let them out to run. So they cannot fly up and out. Find a work around the trees are in the area where they run around in.
When we had turkeys we put a netting over the pen to keep them in and predators out. Although over here (UK) we don't have the big scary predators you have in Nova Scotia. Great video as always. The whole place is coming together and it's beautiful!
We free ranged our turkeys on the farm and at night I would gobble and they would follow me right into their turkey coup. My brother would operate the door so I could get back out and he would shut the door immediately so the turkeys wouldn't escape.
We keep a light in our chicken coop/turkey coop (we keep all our together and we keep a light on all night. We don't have any problems with ours going in. Maybe try putting a light in there...also...have you clipped their wings? This will help them from flying so high. Animals like lights. It's so dark in your coop that could be why they don't go in.
Cog Hill Farm has a goose in with their chickens and he keeps them safe from predators. The goose has to be raised with the chickens so it’s his flock and protective. They also have an electric wire around the top of the fence. This might help with your turkeys and chickens. Might be too late this year.
We used to have the light timed to come on at bedtime in the coop and the new hens would be drawn into the lighted coop. We turned it off for the night after they all came in.
As I am watching, we are in sydney waiting on our daughter to have her 3rd boy! Snow and rain and sleet yuk. She had to put netting over her chicken coop.
You can try a light inside the coop... and dark outside.. with roosts as high as you can. My turkeys put themselves to bed... but we have an enclosure thats over 20 ft tall with high roosts that they jump up to.
Wonder if you whistled or sang a song ,meanwhile feeding them something they like and gradually dropping some food and move into the coup with them ,if they'd all follow you in...like the pied piper.
Bride them with treats inside their coop 15 minutes before dark. Some birds are nervous going into a dark place. You may need to do this a couple nights. Good luck.
@@ElysiaEnglish 🤣One day it started to rain and my brother has two VERY TALL beech trees in his yard. As I stood looking out of the window a huge turkey kind of plopped out of the tree landing feet first-I just screamed, I was shocked. Then four more came out of the tree-it was crazy they were so tall and I had no idea they were in the tree!!
SUGGESTION... IN THE TURKEY PEN, WHY DONT YOU PUT A 2X4 ACROSS from TREE to tree TO ENCOURAGE THEM TO SET UP THERE INSTEAD OF, ON THE FENCE. MARGARET FROM MAINE.😊
If you will clip your turkey's Wings it doesn't hurt them at all but you clip the last set of feathers they will no longer fly out they can't we've had to do that to ours for safety reasons and it's been such a real relief you are so only really need to do one side
@ you two are the energized Bunnies! I wish i had 1/4 of your energy. I am in my 80’s 🙄. So i had my day! I love watching you and Phil transform your homestead into a beautiful home and property for you and the boys. God Bless You ❤️
From personal experience, turkeys are dumb. I've had to rescue them from standing in the rain with their beaks up because they will drown that way.(had it happen). My ex had them trained to come to a call like Come On, that was usually when we fed them but it worked to train them to go to the pen. Where we were last we had to put a chicken wire roof on the pen to keep them in and other things out. It was tall enough for us to walk in comfortably. Had some dropped off dogs just tear into the wire on the side and tear it to pieces to get to the chickens he had and kill them all but one. He is moving the pen closer to the house and deciding on other fence material. Chicken wire has worked so far with no problems but these dogs just seemed to eat through the wire.
Suggestion… clip the turkeys wings. Everything is looking good. Ty for the video.
♥️♥️♥️♥️🤟🤟🤟🤟
Yes that would stop from flying up.
We clipped both our chickens and ducks, they stay home and safe at night. It works.
Glad the weather has been cooperating
with your projects. Hope it holds till all is
done. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 🍁🍂🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂

I’m amazed at the pigs knowing to go into their home. They’re very well trained.
Pigs are smart naturally. Easy to train.

You can also string barbed wire along the bottom of your hog fence.

Maybe some picket fencing along the sides of the roof will stop the turkeys from getting up there

Could you maybe attach some netting or something around the turkey coop roof so they can't fly out? Maybe utilize the trees?😮😮😮❤❤❤ little stinkers! 😅

How about netting on top of fence. I have seen other tubbers do this
You can clip their wing feathers so they can't fly over the fence

Hi guys my neaibor put wire fencing on top they coop love ❤️
In the wild they roost on tree limbs so yeah they need high protection.
If the turkey only knew they are a tasty treat!!😅
Could you give them a small amount of feed in their coop at night? This might encourage the habit of going into it for a snack every evening.💕
add bright colored flag tape along the top of the wire fence - so it flaps!

They also have an electric wire around the top of the fence. This might help with your turkeys and chickens. Might be too late this year.
SO much fun!😅
I wonder if you clip their wings like you do on chickens it would prevent them from flying outside the fence?
We used to have the light timed to come on at bedtime in the coop and the new hens would be drawn into the lighted coop. We turned it off for the night after they all came in.
As I am watching, we are in sydney waiting on our daughter to have her 3rd boy! Snow and rain and sleet yuk. She had to put netting over her chicken coop.
Maybe a sound or light alarm to help them know to go in.
Hawks and Eagles love turkeys and chicken got my neighbors because they didn’t have netting on top
Good night
I'd love to help you folks!! I'd move the wood.
You can try a light inside the coop... and dark outside.. with roosts as high as you can. My turkeys put themselves to bed... but we have an enclosure thats over 20 ft tall with high roosts that they jump up to.
Yes we have a heat light for them

The trimmed trees are still low enough for the turkeys to fly up onto. My brother has turkeys that fly very high up into the trees on his property
Yes we know hahah

Please add netting to the top of the turkey area .
Well actually a fence is only limited by 4 ft heights. So you can double up the 4ft fence to make an 8 ft fence.
Bylaws here
You’re going to have to electrify the fence unfortunately
Every night should work, good luck…

Feed them at night in the coop. They will catch on pretty quick.
Might be time for a couple of large guardian dogs or a llama.
