  • Recombinant DNA technologyA laboratory technique that combines DNA from different species or creates new genes with desired traits. It is based on the principles of cloning and DNA sequencing, and the steps involved are the following:
Isolating DNA: DNA is isolated from the donor and host organism.
Cutting DNA: Restriction enzymes are used to cut DNA.
Joining of Fragments: DNA ligase is used to join DNA fragments.
Introduction of DNA: Recombinant DNA is introduced into the host organism.
Screening: The transformed cells are selected and examined.
The resulting recombinant DNA is often introduced into a bacterial or yeast cell, where the cell's machinery copies the engineered DNA.
Recombinant DNA technology has applications in science, medicine, agriculture, and industry. For example, the GloFish is a type of transgenic zebrafish that was created using recombinant DNA technology. The US Food and Drug Administration has approved the GloFish for human use, but this has raised questions about the extent to which genetically modified animals should be made available to consumers.
